Apparently this isn't a gmail password leak as such, its a leak of passwords collected from other websites which are associated with a gmail account.

Correct - so if you happened to use an email address as your user name on a site, and that site was hacked then they have your email address and your password for that site. But unfortunately, people happen to use the same password on several sites so there is a chance that they've now got your gmail password (or whatever email account) as a result of this.
