have a client contract that's looking to deliberately disclaim this and waive any rights upon...

Immediately suspicious. What I know of it I can't think why, so I'm striking it out.

But does anyone actually have any decent - layman's - understanding of this & why the client would want it struck that they can impart here?

Depends - has the country they are incorporated in ratified it? If not its understandable.

yes - client is a blue chip in the US, the US ratified it

I just struck the f***** out, partly to see what they do and also if it's a UN convention it's probably a good thing

As I understand it, a contract between two countries that have ratified it dont need to contain the clause. It applies in any event unless strictly disapplied within the contract. Might as well push to put it back in anyway.
