I've posted a parcel to Europe. It's now in the US.

f***ing seriously...and all they do is apologise. " If the parcel is still in the system in a months time then we might be able to do something "

Chinese antiques bouncing around the postal network - yeah, great stuff.

Italy as in, Italy in Texas???

how does something for Italy end up in America?

Feck knows.

Maybe my mother works for them. She left Maidenhead for Nottingham and found herself crossing the Severn Bridge.

Well it's on it's way to Italy so there may well be more misadventures to come.

good luck with that, post to Italy is notoriously bad-have to sell through eBay for work, and use their forums, a lot of sellers have stopped sending to Italy due to issues with their postal system.

Haha - I worked with a girl who left Marlow for brighton and ended up in Bristol once

aye, i run an online business and the italian postal system is horrendous. if an Italian buyer wants anything from me they can pay for it to be courriered, otherwise they can f*** off. i'd say about 10% of stuff ive posted to Italy using Royal Mail never arrived.

I was sent two cheques in the mail last weekend from someone in Essex. By Wednesday they hadn't turned up. Yesterday I got a letter from a lady in Bolton enclosing the cheques and explaining they had been delivered to her by Royal Mail. Given that I live in South Bucks, have an address and post code which is on the envelope and is totally different to hers and the Royal Mail delivers it to Bolton! A Royal Mail friend of mine in my area tried to explain to me that this is because a large chunck of postmen can't read English properly. I think there's more to it than that but God knows what!

A fellow UKIP voter down the golf club tried to blame it on the fact, that he invented on the spot, that a large chunck of postmen can't read English properly. I chose to believe him unquestioningly.

I think its fair enough that if you don't speak the language very well it would harder to do a job where you need to understand the language. Especially if you're trying to decipher handwriting and you have a poor geographical knowledge of the local area. I don't think i'd be a competent postman in Romania or Bulgaria for example.

What i don't believe is that anyone so inadequate for the job would be hired in the first place.

Is mail hand sorted still? Do you need to read English to read a post code?

They throw all the letters into a massive tumble dryer-type thing which feeds them into a conveyorbelt and they get read electronically to be sorted into regions. The ones that can't be read by the machine go past a team of workers that physically read them and do the sorting to regions. That's where the line of blue dots on your delivered letters come from.

The regionally sorted mail then gets taken to the night-shift sorters that pigeon-hole the mail into districts within those regions and that all gets sent to the postie rooms for them to hand sort the mail into the streets on their walks when they come in to work at 10 to 5 in the morning.
