This Next Season Thing

Why is it that there seems to be this idea that this is going to be our only shot at the title for years? I don't get it - this feels to me like only the start for a young team of players and a young manager, even if we don't win it this time around.

Surely the average age of our first team means we are likely to get better? Surely FFP is going to at least limit the ability of Chelsea and City to spend unlimited amounts? Surely United have a gigantic rebuilding task? What is it that suggests we're a flash in the pan? This could be the beginning of a generation of success.

I think it's unfair and a bit disrespectful of Rodgers and what he has achieved this season to say this is going to be a one off. I don't think that will be the case at all - in fact I'm feeling quite the opposite. Keep hearing commentators say it though.

Exactly. Understand we will have cl too, but still. We've shown we know how win games, put a run together etc.

It's just the journo's though. Loads of our fans are acting like our one challenge is done for another 10 years.

I reckon the next 2 seasons are fairly open as a minimum.

There is a presumption that cos we didnt have european footy we had time to prepare for games. They ignore the fact that city and chelseas squad is twice ours.

There is a presumption that we got lucky with injuries. It ignores the fact suarez was out for six and sturridge was out for months and the entire back four was and our tiny winy squad.

It very much depends on what we do.

We've been fed s**** that players wanted top level footy, it didnt stop top players going to city or chelsea when they were s****, the wages offered was enough temptation, we'll see if not being involved in the champions league stops players going to united in the summer.

We need to get this summer right.

We need the players we were after last summer and january.

Striker, happy to sit on the bench, decent enough to come in for suarez and sturridge.

Full backs to challenge and oust flanno and johnson

Centre halfs, at least one, who's commanding, talking, leading, brilliant with and without the ball.

Centre midfielder, cynical, tough tackling, ball player, g******* and fearless.

Winger - someone who likes having the ball and can run with it.

Everything that aspas, cissohko, toure, alberto, moses isn't.

We have to get it right. We have to invest in this piddling little squad. Cant rely on ffp like we cant rely on villa or west ham.

We have to do it ourselves. We have to get it right.

The chances of a season were Sturridge and Suarez are on fire and neither has extended injuries will be tough. Next year people are going to be more aware of how we play and how to find our weaknesses. After today teams will not panic being 3-0 down to us. Think we need a few older heads on the park and I think BR could use a little help from a defensive standpoint.

Lots made of no European football this year & CL next - but it's 6 games for f***'s sake. Win 4 of them and you can play a second string for 2 of them.

It has AN impact but far too much been made of it. Yes the travel isn't ideal but it's still only 6 games.

In terms of needing more maturity/winners/leaders - I hear Mascherano wants back to the PL.

I don't think it is anything against Brendan but what other teams will do.

Man City will have another season under Pellegrini and will no doubt strengthen. Chelsea will buy a striker they need.

Arsenal will strengthen.

Mancs will have Van Gaal at the helm and will be much tougher to beat.

I dont think we will get the same breaks next season. Almost everything went our way and we still f*cked up. Our defence is on par with the teams fighting relegation not challenging the top. Unfortunately, it may be some time before we are challening. That is the thing that hurts. We got so close but totally f*cked it up. Yesterday was a disgrace.

I think the chances of everything alligning so well are slimmer for next season. Chelsea will have a real striker, Arsenal presumably won't rely on Girud and will have Walcott back. presumably Aguero won't miss half City's league games injured... and teams will know more what to expect from us. Maybe it will happen, but I can't see Suarez and Sturridge scoring 50+ in the league... My way of thinking has changed to be a bit more positive about next season - I do think we'll be up there challenging, just not sure we'll have as good a shot as we did with 3 games left...

I've heard that stated so many times this season that we have been fortunate with injuries, but its completely incorrect. Added to Suarez missing the first 5 league games (which would have helped our GD) we have had injuries to Sturridge, Lucas Gerrard, Coutinho, Enrique, Johnson, Agger, Sakho, Cissokho and Allen. With the small squad we have, thats massive. So I dont know where this one comes from but its certainly being rolled out by the media.

Ha! What a cheerful, optimistic bunch you all are!

Next season we will be better. If we had held out and won the league would everyone still be saying that next season is going to be a struggle for us? We'll probably finish second, not bad.

We'll attract better players, our younger players will be better and we'll have had another pre season under Rodgers. He's not going to sit back and forget about this defence, he will act to improve it and lets face it, it can't be much worse and we've managed this well. Coutinho, Sturridge, Sterling and Suarez are going to improve even more. I really can't understand this negativity. By all accounts, Chelsea will sign one striker and be a free scoring machine but there is no way we'll sort our defence out? We will be top three again next year, no doubt.

We need six players as BR said and you're relying on 6 hits not place sitters like Toure, Moses, Aspas, Borini, Cissokho and Alberto.

Not true.

If we sign 6 players i'll settle for half of them improving the first team. Asking for 100% success is totally unrealistic. Three first team improvements will be massive and will strengthen the bench hugely.

I think it's all about your respect for Rodgers - I think he's a future legend and he'll work it out. He'll make the right moves and make us better again. Other people seem to think different which surprises me. What he's achieved this season is remarkable.

Mancs not being in Europe will be a major boost for them in the league even if they don't strengthen much

How much will it affect them financially? If they don't get Europa it's several match day revenues they miss out, which they would have a full house for, plus a sizeable chunk of TV money. It could play a part in how much they can spend and who they attract. They can't not strengthen - Vidic, Evra and Ferdinand need replacing for a start.

You expect us to sign six players who are all instant "hits"?

Given that no club has ever done that, I'd start managing my expectations now if I was you, just to avoid acute disappointment when the impossible doesn't happen.

Our squad is still small and has struggled with off the bench options and we've CL football which brings another range of selection posers.

We need a better hit rate than three outta the last four windows.

This always doesn't call into question sales.

Seemed to take both Chelsea and City time to adjust to their new managers. Utd went t*** up. Arsenal is as Arsenal does. An ideal opportunity for a young squad with an inexperienced.manager.

That's one way of looking at it, although it may not be giving this team enough credit.

CL games should give squad players more chance to be in form later in the season ( providing we qualify from the group, of course ). Gerrard will need to be rested for certain games.

Players who arrive in the summer need to be better than last. No more loan signings like Moses.

It will be more difficult but you'd expect us to be more well prepared. You can blitz teams in this league but you need a couple more gears.

Getting the right signings in isn't just about Rodgers though, and we have a poor transfer record under this set up. Do you have respect for Ayres?

City probably won't strengthen and won't be allowed to:

From today's LEquipe regarding PSG'S punishment - this is one of the sanctions and City will reportedly get the same

They are limited to bringing in one player and they will only be able to have 21 players (including 8 homegrown in CL squad) and they cannot raise their current wage bill for 3 years. And they have to break even by next year or be kicked out of CL.
