Match-fixing: Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed'

380 matches fixed including one played in England, and therefore presumably involving an English team.

I've always said that there has been a number of dodgy games in this country, purely on the basis that it has been a problem in every other major league in Europe and our FA prefer to refuse to consider the possibility rather than investigate outrageous decisions.

The English CL one was in the last 4 years, so if it involves us I can only think of 2 matches, the chelsea semi when we were denied a blatant pen and they were awarded one for a blatant dive, or when got a very dodgy penalty in the last min of a group game, that we didn't even really claim for, think it was against Athletico?

You presuming it will be the refs then?

I think many of these might be players from crap clubs being paid not to score

Not really presuming anything, but if you are going to fix a match, then surely the ref would be the obvious target. Given his control of the game and relative income in comparison to the player. Usually in the previous scandals it's been players and officials.

Not sure of the point in bribing a crap player not to score, surely the crap teams aren't expected to score anyway?

Make certain of it I mean

It involves players and refs apparently. I don't see how a top player is going to throw a champions league game for £80K

So it has to be lower paid players. Taking money to play crap in games they haven't got a hope in anyway

Or the dodgy owner of some team...?

Is there money in that then? I am not that up on methods of betting, but say, bribing FC Cluj players to lose to man u, are you going to make much? Even if you are betting on the spread you are relying on the crap team to be able to control that spread, you don't want too many 8-0s I guess or it would be obvious.

Going to be interesting though. 350 matches a hell of a lot to anull.

Hopefully the annul all CL matches since 2006 and declare those seasons to have no winners.

.

It is generally better odds to bet against a team scoring than it is for them losing

There would be good money in that. Worth paying off a loan striker for just in case anyway

And it would be much harder to detect than a team getting hammered

So betting on the 'nil'?

If you're running an illegal gambling operation and you have a player priced up at 3/1 to score first, and you've paid him off not to score, you could make a mint

Probably make far more money if you offer more generous odds about first scorer. 3/1, for everyone except Messi, is unbelievably skinny.

A Danish paper saying it was our1-0 win against Debrecen. Keeper apparently bribed to let in 3 but we could only score 1! Can't even remember the game to be honest.

According to BBC live text, made a couple of saves around the hour mark, presumably thinking he'd have more shots to save/let in before the end. Half a dozen attempts after that either blocked or off target.

If true, that kind of sums up how s*** our season was.

In the finnish league there was one team (RoPS) who had nine players suspended for match fixing in 2011. They were allegedly getting between 1000 and 40000 euros each. The same year the whole club of Tampere United was suspended for accepting something close to 300000 euro from some Singaporean guy without being able to explain why. My local team had a kenyan goalkeeper suspected of receiving 50000 from the same guys for throwing two games in 2010 but he was cleared eventually. I still think he was dodgy! One would think it would be more proftable in the long run to do this in the smaller leagues with cheaper players and less attention.
