Ronnie Whelan

Was a top player. Superb passer, short and long. Appeared a bit lightweight but always a hard worker who added some real steel to his game & became the midfield lynchpin.

Scored some absolute screamers as well.

He's a pretty good blueprint for Jordan Henderson to be fair.

Did he really support the Mancs as a kid?

Great player for us tbf and scored some great goals in the league cup finals against Spurs and the Mancs in 82 and 83.

You didn't tend to notice him when he was moved into central midfield as the eye was taken by the likes of John Barnes. When he was out of the team you suddenly realised just how much he contributed. Lucas reminds me of him in the same way.

ask him why he clicked his fingers when he scored.

They all did it, badly. Can't remember what it was called but it was a big fad at the time.

Great player Ronnie. Good point about him being a blueprint for Hendo as there was similar criticism when he frist broke in.

Redknapp tops them all.

Can't believe I forgot about him. A complete imbecile.

The likes of Houghton, Whelan and McMahon are more bitter and spiteful than Redknapp though. I don't even think the latter likes football.

Big difference. He was fearless - even as a kid.

The criticism came later. When he broke into the team with Ian Rush he was a breath of fresh air and contributed massively to us winning the title from being nowhere at Christmas. That season he was voted young player of the year ahead of Ian Rush.
