Non-League/Lower League footy

Do any of you follow any non league or lower league football teams at all? I personally have started to follow my local club Burton Albion more and have also been to a couple of fleetwood town and AFC Telford games due to lads at work.

I must say I was surprised with the quality of the football and it helps blow some of the cobwebs away with the troubles we are experiencing at anfield.

I think I read murph saying he followed fleetwood but does anyone else follow any such sides and what do you think of your experience of it?

The chairman of Fleetwood Town has put loads of money into them. One rumour said at one point last year in the Conference North they had a wage bill bigger than an unnamed League One club.

He also fought a big legal battle after they ended up 2nd because one team had their results deleted from the league.

Seems a bit of a nutter. They could be in admin in no time if they don't have sustained success.

I enjoy the odd game of Marine or Southport but the prices are getting out of control for the quality. Same price as Wigan or Blackburn.

I lived in fleetwood for a couple of years, absolutely astounded and pleased to see them on the verge of the league, they're full time too.

But my team is Beaconsfield SYCOB of The Zamaretto Southern League. I help run the youth teams, 5 of my players from last year are in the reserves, the standard of football is really very very good. I worked with the seniors in pre season, we're only a small club but non league football is better than the premiership in many ways.Certainly less knobheads at the match.

thats certainly true murph re: the amount of nobheads at the non-league is much less than the premiership games i have been to.

I would say though that the non-league can be expensive moreso than even league football. For example it costs £13 to stand at a terrace at AFC Telford behind the goal but it costs £11 to stand behind the goal at League 2 Burton Albion? Have noticed the same regarding the comment wayne made regarding Preston (only £7 to get in?!).

I went to the last game of the season at Burton last season involving Grimsby Town which resulted in Grimsby being relegated to the Blue Square - there was trouble after the game i had not seen in many a year!!

Planning to go and watch Cammell Laird soon, some fambo involvement, one of the inlaw lads plays for them. He was telling me how they can't wait for the Chester game, to play in their stadium in front of a decent crowd. Chester are like billionaires in their division.

am in the same part of the world as you Manx. I have been keeping a close eye on Lewes Town who have been taken over by the community:

"In a statement released to the Sussex Express yesterday morning, the new Rooks125 group said: "As the club nears its 125th anniversary in September, it now begins an equally historic process taking it from private ownership to a democratic model of one member, one share, one vote. This is believed to be the first time that an English club has achieved a universally agreed, smooth handover from private to cooperative ownership.

"After 10 years that has seen the club rise from the Ryman Division Three to the top reaches of the non-league pyramid, current owners Martin Ellott and Kevin Powell are relinquishing control and passing the club on to the community".

Basically, they're like Barcelona now. Plan to go to a few games this season and hope that my love for the game can somehow be rekindkled.

its Prescot, as in the unibond regionals or whatever name its called now. they're 3 divisions below the conference, and they average about 200 people per game. its nice just to sit in the stand and watch a game without any emotional involvement, and the games are usually entertaining enough, not a lot of 0-0's at that level

SiGn LeWeS ToWn PlAyErs!!

Sounds good that though, will keep an eye on them. Where do they play?

the ground is the dripping pan, right in the centre of Lewes near the station. I'll be heading over there at some point soon this season with Jamie, a lad you have met in the montpellier I think.

good article here (despite it being Hayward):

ah sorry mate misread your post.

In relation to these lower league games there are far more david v goliath games that take place that i have witnessed for eg I went to a game in the Blue Square North last season AFC Telford v Solihull Borough. Telford play in a ground that can hold up to 4000 when packed out but Solihull Borough at the time played in a ground that could hold no more than 200. This was reflected by the fact that there were no more than 12 people in the away to support solihull (as mentioned by the bloke on the PA but you could count them yourself pretty easily!).

What does make it interesting is that despite the vast differences between the clubs the games are very close and there is very little to seperate them!!
