The Confederate Flag

I happen to have a trucker-style shirt on that has a few badges and things on it. On the back is a US confederate flag.

Someone has suggested to me it's a racist flag and is still highly contentions in the states.

I know bits about the history of the confederacy and its links with slavery, but I assumed the flag was just representative of "the south" and unfortunately that was what was happening in America at the time. Surely the stars and stripes is as linked to slavery in this regard?

I'd imagine the flag was/is appropriated by some hate groups, but this person reckons if i wore a shirt with the flag on it in America i'd be running the risk of getting some aggro!

I pointed out i'd already worn it in the states, but it didn't seem to cut it.

I think I may know be thought of as a big, slavery-yearning racist.

I think the person is taking nonsense, but a pang of concern did flash across my mind at the prospect of wearing something that is much more controversial than I thought!

Then again, the Dukes of Hazard had one on their car..
