The Golden Eagle, iirc, was once where the nation was effectively run from at times. Local MP - and, obviously, PM - Harold Wilson used to stay there when in the constituency and hold court with the great and the good (and the not so great or good) - Beer and Sandwiches and Deals in smoke-filled rooms with Party apparatchiks, Union leaders, local government bigwigs, shady and legitimate businessmen - especially when he wanted it to be away friom the goldfish bowl of Whitehall, and out of reach of the Civil Service, although it is guaranteed that the security services would have been all over the place - not to protect him, but to spy on him as is now well known as fact from the likes of Peter Wright. Wilson was the slipperiest and most machiavellian of politicians, but just because he was paranoid didn't mean they weren't out to get him.

Golden Eagle was indeed quite a famous place back in the day. Very much a place to be seen in and they had the fancy restaurant with orange juice starters steak and black forest gateau. By the time I was doing my A levels in early 70's then it had gone downhill and was a place where we would bevy lunchtime not acknowledging staff in the other corner who in turn would not officially acknowledge us.

later I had a job on the bins in the summer hols on cover and we used to call there 2-3 times per week and empty the bin kitchen bins...always a great breakfast on the house

Reasonably common knowledge, I thought, although very possibly totally apocryphal. I'm not especially local (Runcorn born and bred), but I seem to recall my Dad telling me about it when he went there (I drove him, iirc) for some function (not with Wilson - later when the Hotel was starting to fade but still had a certain cachet), and other snippets have corroborated it for me.

I do not know this Fyds of whom you speak.

we still need Fyds for some backstories

he'll probably see your orange juice and bins and Wilson and raise you by a pint with Phil Thompson and a cigar with yer man Harold

I have now put the boot in to Fyds several times in this thread....for no particular reason

Fyds, I'm just breaking your balls a little
