Liverpool's Javier Mascherano has moved to deny speculation linking him with a move to Spain.

The midfielder is reportedly a transfer target for several La Liga clubs but the Argentine international insists that he is focused on the Reds' season.

"I have no idea if a Spanish team want me," he told Spanish newspaper AS.

"I'm just focused on having a good season with Liverpool and then we will see."

Mascherano also spoke of Liverpool's title challenge and the upcoming Champions League tie with Real Madrid.

"For sure we have been struggling recently, but it's been in a while since we have been fighting for the title, and at the moment we are second," he added.

"And we still have to play Manchester United. This year we have won the important games."

"Madrid are Madrid, and they are always hard to beat. The truth is that at the moment we have the same style of football.

"Madrid have improved defensively under Juande Ramos and they have become a much more solid side. Besides, from the back to the attack they have an excellent squad.

"It's going to be a very tight knock-out stage, with a narrow result."

Anyone would think we were playing Real Madrid soon.

So True...

1. telling Gerrard to rush back even though not fit.

2. wasn't one of their players saying we were afraid of them.

3. Torres linked to Barcelona in the summer.

4. Reina looking to go to Athelico Madrid (again)

5. Now Mascherano being linked to Spanish clubs.

I would imagine the next one is Alonso being linked to Madrid, oh hang on, did they do that one already....

Father to convince Reina to join Atletico

Pepe Reina’s father Miguel has revealed he will try and convince his son to play for Atletico Madrid in the near future.

Reina senior also played as a goalkeeper and spent seven years at Atletico from 1973-1980 and is set to convince son Pepe to join the club.

“My son has seen the red and white colours since he was small and he would love to play for Atletico,” he said.

“This weekend I am going to see him and I will talk to him about it.

“Pepe is crazy about playing for Atletico and I will try to convince him so that he does it as soon as possible.”

If Atletico do look to sign the Spanish keeper, it would take a large fee to prise him away from Merseyside.

yeah! then he can be just as underachieving and wasteful of his career as his dad was! good plan dad! ruin your son's career by making him join the Spanish Spurs.

I'd be pissed off if my dad was in the local paper telling everyone I was interested in going to work for another company.

Tell Atletico they can have him in a straight swap for Aguero.

not sure I would be happy with that to be honest, Aguero is a very good player, but Reina would be very difficult to replace, just think off all the rubbish keepers we have had for the past 18 years or so!

True. That's the only way I'd consider it though unless Reina made it clear that he wanted to leave.

He's got plenty of time to play for Atletico. He shouldn't rush it.

His dad is just trying to get free tickets for Atletico games. 'Yep, Pepe will come if you keep me sweet...'

I'd say if Rafa leaves Liverpool we would probably see a mass exodus of our Spanish players TBH. While he is here they will stay with him.

it would depend on who is replacing him

They might leave if a new manager decides to get in a bunch of his own favorites in quickly.

My impression is that players like Pepe, Xabi and Fernando have settled very well in Liverpool on a personal/private level. Fingers crossed.

If the new manager sees them, and I'm not limiting myself to the Spanish lads, as useful players I can't see them leaving easily.
