George born 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Gre

Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner. Luis García put us 2-0 up with a beautiful lob soon after the restart, our 500th home Premiership goal. Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off

New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over

A European treble 1984 - John Wark bagged a hat-trick as we beat Polish champions Lech Poznań 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate, having also scored our goal in the away leg. Paul Walsh was also on target that night. Debutants 1903 - Jack Parkinson scored on his reds debut in our 2-1 win at Small Heath, with left-half George Fleming also on the scoresheet, scoring from the rebound after his own spot-kick was saved. 1926 - We also beat Birmingham City, as they were by then known, in the top flight with Vic Wright and Phil Taylor nettin

Midfield arrivals 2011 – Charlie Adam signed from Blackpool for an initial £6.75m. He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back

Happy birthday Jan 1963 - Jan Mølby was born in Kolding. The big Dane arrived at Anfield in August 1984, signed by Joe Fagan for £225,000 from Ajax. He netted 61 times in his 292 reds games, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks. He won three League titles, two FA Cups and Screen Sport Super Cup while at Anfield, before moving into management. His armband proved he was a red 2007 - Fernando Torres signed from Club Atlético de Madrid for £20.2m in a six-year deal, although this fee was greatly inflated in the media. He proved an instant hit, notching 81 goals in j
