Death of a true gentleman 2001 - Joe Fagan died aged eighty. He joined the coaching staff at Anfield in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager under Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League title, European Cup and League Cup as we won 71 of his 131 games in charge. He retired in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy in May 1985. 1958 – He was appointed Assistant Trainer under Phil Taylor’s management, replacing Dicky Dorsett. 2019 – Noel White died. He had resigned from the Board in October 2006 after leaking critical stories of Rafael Benítez’s rotation policy to the press. He had been on the Board for twenty years, including a spell as Chairman between 1990 and 1991. Final disappointments 2002 - Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Christian Ziege appeared for Germany in the World Cup Final as they went down 2-0 against Brazil in Yokohama. Hamann thus became only the second red to appear in the biggest game in world football, after ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt in 1966. 2013 – Ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres played as Brazil beat Spain 3-0 in the Confederations Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro. On the same day, Luis Suárez and ex-red Alberto Aquilani both converted penalties in a shoot-out as Italy beat Uruguay 3-2 after their Third Place Play-off in Salvador had ended 2-2 after ninety and 120 minutes. Michael goes supernova 1998 - Michael Owen found worldwide fame as he scored ‘that’ goal for England against Argentina in their World Cup Second Round meeting in Saint-Étienne. He had already won England a penalty, and later himself converted one of the spot-kicks in the eventual shoot-out that settled the tie 4-3 in Argentina’s favour after the game ended 2-2. Clubmate Paul Ince had his penalty saved. Paddy and Vlad at Wembley 1996 - Patrik Berger scored a penalty for the Czech Republic in the Euro ‘96 Final, as they lost 2-1 to Germany thanks to a brace from Oliver Bierhoff, two months before he moved to Anfield. Vladimír Šmicer won his last cap as an SK Slavia Praha player in this game, while the German side included future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege. Those six words 2000 - Evertonians cried ‘betrayal’ as Nick Barmby announced his desire for a switch across Stanley Park with the words, “I want to play for Liverpool”. He arrived at Anfield three weeks later. Coaches in and out 2008 – The appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as first-team coach was announced by the club. He had been working as a youth team coach at Valencia. He stayed with the reds until he followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in the summer of 2010. 2011 – The departure of Assistant Manager Sammy Lee by mutual consent was announced. He had been in that role since May 2008. 2021 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of Everton. However, he was sacked the following January, with the Blues sitting in fifteenth place. Knocked out in Rome 1990 - Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 to Italy in their World Cup Quarter-final in the Stadio Olimpico. Javier’s last 2006 - Javier Mascherano won his last cap as a Corinthians player as Argentina drew 1-1 with Germany in their World Cup Quarter-final in Berlin, with the host nation progressing 4-2 on penalties, as fellow future red Maxi Rodríguez converted his spot-kick. 2014 – Ex-red Victor Moses played as Nigeria lost 2-0 to France in their Round of Sixteen game in Brasilia. 2015 – Ex-red Mascherano reached the Final of the Copa América in Chile as Argentina thumped Paraguay 6-1. On the same day, Tiago Ilori was on the losing side as Sweden Under-21’s beat Portugal 4-3 on penalties after their goalless European Championships Final in Prague. This was his tenth and last cap at this level. 2018 – Mascherano played as Argentina lost 4-3 to France in a Round of Sixteen tie in Kazan, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez helping Uruguay to defeat Portugal 2-1 in Sochi at the same stage. Births and death 1917 - Forward Harry Eastham was born in Blackpool. He signed from his hometown club in February 1936 but only notched four times in 68 games for the reds in a career interrupted by the Second World War, scoring four times. He left Anfield for Tranmere Rovers in May 1948 having helped us to claim the first post-war League title. 1890 - Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller was born in Motherwell. He signed for £400 from Hamilton Academical in February 1912 and netted 56 times in his 146 games while at Anfield, helping us to our first FA Cup Final in 1914. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920. 2006 – Northern Irish forward Trent Kone-Doherty was born in Derry. He joined the Academy in July 2022, turning pro in October 2023. 1970 - Former reds defender Barry Jones was born. The apprentice decorator signed from his hometown club Prescot Town for a £500 donation but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland. 1938 – Scottish inside-left Hugh Morgan died. He struck seventeen times in 68 reds games after his arrival from St. Mirren in March 1898 for £200. He was top scorer in his first full season at Anfield, also winning a second senior cap while on our books before joining Blackburn Rovers in June 1900. In and out 1900 – Right-back General Stevenson left the reds to sign for Barnsley. He had signed from Padiham in December 1897, playing 22 times without scoring. 1954 – Left-back Eddie Spicer’s contract expired. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1952 – Glasgow-born centre-half Joe Cadden left the reds to sign for Grimsby Town after just five games since his arrival from Brooklyn Wanderers in the USA in June 1948. 1988 – Defender Nicky Tanner signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers for £20,000. He made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Ronnie leaves the Shrimpers 1997 - Ronnie Whelan resigned as Manager of Southend United, blaming a lack of support from the board. He had been in charge at Roots Hall for two years, but was unable to keep them in the rarefied heights of the First Division. Keepers on the move 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on trial. He later joined them on a season-long loan, but injury once again struck, restricting him to just twelve appearances for the Baggies. 1999 - Ex-reds reserves keeper Michael Stensgaard signed for F.C. København from Southampton on a free transfer. As at Anfield, he had failed to make the first team at The Dell. 1952 – Welsh stopper Cyril Sidlow was released, joining Notts County two months later. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947 and appearing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. On the same day, right-back Bill Shepherd moved on to Wigan Athletic. He had played 58 reds games since arriving from Elm Park in December 1945. Also on target 2007 - Harry Kewell scored as Australia won a friendly 3-0 in Singapore. He also captained his country for part of the game. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s were held to a goalless draw by the Czech Republic in a World Championship Finals group game in Ottawa. 2011 - Raheem Sterling netted as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Argentina in their World Championship Finals Round of Sixteen game in Mexico, before triumphing 4-2 on penalties, with Adam Morgan on target in the shoot-out and Brad Smith also in action. Meanwhile, Samed Yeşil netted as Germany, skippered by Emre Can, beat the USA 4-0, while fellow future red Takumi Minamino scored as Japan Under-17’s thrashed New Zealand 6-0, also at the same stage. 2019 – Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt beat Uganda 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Cairo. Winging in and out 2006 - Ex-red Richie Partridge signed for Rotherham United. He netted four times in 36 outings for the Merry Millers in his one season with them as they were relegated to League Two. 2007 – Forward Dani Pacheco signed from Barcelona, signing pro terms the following January. He failed to score in his seventeen senior reds appearances before moving to AD Alcorcón in September 2013. 2009 – Paul Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest for £250,000, having spent the previous campaign on loan at the City Ground. He joined the reds from Hull City in a swap deal for John Welsh in January 2006, making it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. On the same day, midfielder Lee Peltier moved to Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Yeovil Town, having struck just once in 77 outings for the Glovers. Olympian reds 1912 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry and future reds left-half Joe Dines both featured in the United Kingdom’s 7-0 thrashing of Hungary at the Olympics in Stockholm. The UK team went on to retain their Olympic title that year. Also in international action 1973 - Future red Kenny Dalglish won his tenth cap for Scotland as they lost 1-0 to Brazil in a friendly at Hampden Park. 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt as they drew 1-1 with the Central African Republic in an Africa Cup of Nations play-off. Also on the move 2022 – Midfielder James Balagizi signed a new contract, joining Crawley Town on loan on the same day, scoring three goals in sixteen outings. 2019 – Turkish centre-back Ozan Kabak joined Schalke 04 from VfB Stuttgart for €15m, netting three times in 42 games before joining the reds on loan in February 2021. 2018 – Left-back Jack Robinson joined Nottingham Forest from Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer. He scored twice in 59 outings before moving on to Sheffield United in January 2020. 2017 – Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas joined Willem II on loan from Olympiacos, scoring six times in 37 games while in Holland. 2016 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was sold to Watford for £4m, having become our youngest ever player in September 2012 aged sixteen years and six days. He struck once in five senior reds games in total, so far netted once in twelve outings for the Hornets as he has spent much of his time out on loan. On the same day, Sammy Lee left as First-Team Assistant Coach of Southampton. 2014 – Czech defender Jakub Sokolík signed for Yeovil Town, playing twelve senior games in his first campaign with the Glovers. He had joined the Academy in 2009. 2011 – Centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Hull City from Leicester City for an initial £850,000, having been on loan since the previous February. 2010 - Christopher Buchtmann returned to his native land from Fulham, signing for 1. FC Köln, having failed to break through at Craven Cottage. 2009 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević signed for Leicester City, after a successful loan spell at the Walkers Stadium in which he made five substitute appearances, although he did not play another first-team game, moving on to Swedish side Örebro SK in July 2010 after being released that May. Reds honoured 2014 – Manager Brendan Rodgers was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science for his outstanding contribution to sport by the University of Ulster in Coleraine. 2008 - Chief Executive Rick Parry was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Liverpool at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. He had graduated from the same institution with a BSc. in Mathematics back in 1976.

Clinching the title 1982 - We claimed our thirteenth League title with a game remaining by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield, having been mid-table at Christmas. Ex-red Ray Clemence was in the Spurs goal, with Mark Lawrenson, Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan scoring past him after Glenn Hoddle had handed the visitors the lead with a glorious strike, one of his four against us. 1984 - Ian Rush was on target as we drew 1-1 with Norwich City, having won the League three days before at Notts County. Kenny Dalglish played his 400th reds game while Phil Neal appeared for us in the League for the 400th time. Quadruple farewell 2004 - Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy and Michael Owen all played their final first-class games for the reds. Owen struck the equaliser as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at Anfield, so finishing the season in fourth spot. This was also Gérard Houllier’s last game in charge, while Paul Harrison was on the bench for the first of thirteen times. Shola Ameobi netted for the visitors. 1989 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald left the reds for Coventry City after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. He had played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” Sammy returns 2008 – Sammy Lee returned to the club as Assistant Manager, having left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers. Forwards in and out 1935 - Jack Balmer signed as an amateur from Everton, turning professional three months later. He went on to score 110 times in 309 games, helping us to the League title in 1947. It was during that season that he netted hat-tricks in three consecutive games, a remarkable feat that has yet to be matched in English top-flight football. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1923 - Jack Sambrook moved on to Stockport County having played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922. Pepe the best again 2008 - Pepe Reina was awarded the Barclays Golden Glove Award for most clean sheets for the third successive season, having kept eighteen shut-outs in the League. Most recently 2011 – We lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur to damage our hopes of qualifying for Europe. Spurs took an early lead when Rafael van der Vaart’s strike deflected in off Glen Johnson, with Luka Modrić converting a controversial second-half penalty. 2016 – We drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with winger Sergi Canos making his only senior reds appearance. Midfielder Cameron Brannagan, winger Jordon Ibe, centre-half Martin Škrtel and left-back Brad Smith all played their last games for the club. Ibe struck our goal as we finished the League season in eighth, our joint lowest placing since returning to the top flight in 1962. This game came just three days before the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel. Happy birthdays 1981 – Left-back Paul Konchesky was born in Barking. Roy Hodgson paid £3.5m for him on transfer deadline day in August 2010, as well as transferring Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kačaniklić to Fulham as part of the deal, who were valued at a combined £1.5m. He made eighteen reds appearances without scoring, being sold to Leicester City in July 2011 for £1.5m after spending the second half of the season on loan at Nottingham Forest. 1901 - Forward Jimmy Walsh was born in Stockport. He signed from his hometown club in May 1922 and netted a brace on his reds bow, bagging a total of 27 goals in his 77 reds games before joining Hull City in June 1928. 1985 - Former reserves centre-back Carl Medjani was born in Lyon. The highly-rated Frenchman signed from Saint-Étienne on a free transfer in August 2003 but failed to break through into the senior squad, moving back to France to join Lorient in July 2006 after a loan spell there. 1976 – Winger Mark Kennedy was born in Dublin. He signed from Millwall for £1.5m in March 1995 but only played 21 times for us, before being sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m three years later. 1979 - Forward Sean Friars was born in Derry. He never made our first team, moving on to Ipswich Town in 1998. Last game before Istanbul 2005 - Argentinean centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino played his thirteenth and final reds game as we beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield in our final League game of the season, to finish behind our neighbours in fifth. Djibril Cissé struck a brace, including a penalty, with Gareth Barry on target for the Villains with the first of his four goals against the reds to date. Igor Bišcan also made his final reds outing as he played his 118th reds game, with Dietmar Hamann turning out for the reds on the 250th occasion. Midfielder Antonio Núñez also appeared for the last time, just his 27th outing. International debutants 1946 - Billy Liddell made his international bow as Scotland beat Switzerland 3-1 in a Victory International at Hampden Park. 1955 - He also played for his country as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Yugoslavia. Future red Tommy Younger was in the Scots’ goal that day. 2008 - Jack Hobbs won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmate Adam Hammill as they lost 2-0 to Russia in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann played for Germany Under-17’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships by beating Italy 2-0 in Dessau. Double trebles 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged four goals and Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Baltimore All Stars 9-0 in an end-of-season friendly at the Municipal Stadium in Baltimore. Willie Fagan added a brace. 1943 - Jack Balmer also struck three times as we drew the second leg of the Lancashire Cup Final 3-3 with Manchester United at Maine Road, to lose 6-4 on aggregate. Holding on 1920 – We retained the Lancashire Senior Cup, sharing the trophy after the Final at Anfield ended 1-1 after extra time against Manchester United. Tom Miller scored for the reds. King Kenny against Clem 1976 - Kenny Dalglish scored through the legs of his future clubmate Ray Clemence as Scotland beat England 2-1 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson all also played. Sami in charge 2012 - Sami Hyypiä was appointed Team Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a permanent basis after a successful temporary period in charge. He stayed in charge until being sacked in April 2014. A busy day 2002 - Danny Murphy signed a new five-year contract. Meanwhile, Stéphane Henchoz was named Swiss Player of the Year, for the second consecutive season. On the same day, our Under-19’s won 3-2 at Highbury in the second leg of the FA Premier Academy League Play-Off Final, but it was not enough to overturn a 5-1 first leg defeat. Also, ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Accrington Stanley from Boston United on a free transfer. He spent one season there, helping them to the UniBond Premier League, and promotion to the Conference, before becoming Manager at Burscough, back in the UniBond. Tosh for Wales 1971 - John Toshack won his first cap as a red, and ninth in total, as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the British International Championships in Cardiff, with future red Peter Cormack featuring for the Scots. 1973 - He also turned out for the Welsh in the same competition, as they lost 3-0 to England at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes was on the winning side that day. 1974 - Crazy Horse also featured for England, skippering them to a 1-0 defeat of Northern Ireland at Wembley in the same competition, with Kevin Keegan also playing. At Hampden 2002 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both played in the UEFA Champions League Final for Real Madrid as they beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 at Hampden Park. Dan’s happy day 2010 – Centre-half Daniel Agger married Sophie Nelson in Hvidovre in his native Denmark. Internationals on target 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck for Uruguay Under-20’s beat Spain 2-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 5-2 to the Netherlands in the European Championships Final in Serbia, with fellow future red Emre Can also playing. 1983 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén scored as Sweden thumped Cyprus 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Malmö. In and out 2006 - Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was released by Bury, after five goals in 51 appearances in his second spell at Gigg Lane. On the same day, centre-half James Smith singed pro terms with the reds. His solitary senior appearance was in a League Cup tie at Reading in October 2006, moving on to Stockport County in December 2007 on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell. Marina honoured 2009 - Kenny Dalglish’s wife Marina was awarded the Citizens of Honour award by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, which was collected on her behalf by Kenny as she was ill. Finishing third 1968 – We ended the season with a 2-1 loss at Stoke City to finish in third place. Roger Hunt struck after Peter Dobing had netted the last of eight goals against the reds, with John Mahoney bagging the winner. Also in international action 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both played for England as they lost a friendly 4-3 to Spain in Madrid. 1937 - Andy Beattie represented Scotland as they beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in a friendly in Prague. He guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1949 - Ray Lambert featured for Wales as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Portugal. 1990 – John Barnes and Steve McMahon played for England as they beat Denmark 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley, with Jim Magilton appearing for Northern Ireland Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by the Republic of Ireland in Portadown. 2002 – Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 3-1 friendly defeat by Canada in St. Gallen. 2014 – Future red Joe Gomez featured as England Under-17’s lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Malta. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Spain in the European Championships Quarter-final in Azerbaijan.

Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan. A quiet day Our only other two first-class games on this day in history both ended in stalemate. 1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Gary Gillespie made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future red David Speedie was amongst the scorers, with Gordon Durie netting the first of his six goals past us and John Bumstead also on target. 1988 - John Aldridge struck a spectacular overhead kick as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Luton Town to reach ninety points in our final League game of the campaign as Steve McMahon reached a century of League games for the reds. We had already clinched our seventeenth League title two weeks earlier. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. The game was watched by 30,376 giving us an average home crowd of 39,682, the best in the division. 1973 - We were also due to play a game, but our UEFA Cup Final first leg meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach at Anfield was postponed after only 27 minutes, due to a sodden pitch. Happy birthdays 1993 – Defender Andre Wisdom was born in Leeds. He joined the reds from Bradford City in January 2008, making 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 1996 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford. He was with the club since the age of eight, making nine senior appearances before joining Oxford United in January 2018. 1989 – Former reserves forward Michael Nardiello was born. 1968 - Neil Ruddock was born in Wandsworth, London. He played 152 games for the reds after being signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5 million, bagging twelve goals and helping us to the Coca-Cola Cup in 1995 before moving on to West Ham United for £100,000 in July 1998. 1971 - Don Hutchison was born in Gateshead. He made only sixty first-team appearances following his £175,000 capture from Hartlepool United in November 1990, netting ten times, before leaving for Upton Park for £1.5m in August 1994. 1933 – Forward Arthur Rowley was born in Fazakerley in Liverpool. He joined the reds in May 1951, failing to score in eleven outings, moving on to Wrexham in November 1954. Reds trebles 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a hat-trick on his reds debut as we lost 4-3 to Everton in the Liverpool County F.A. Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park. 1942 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we beat Chester 3-0 in a Lancashire Cup First Round second leg match to progress 6-1 on aggregate. Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Nando the champion 2001 – Fernando Torres converted a penalty to hand Spain Under-16’s the European Championships, as they beat France 1-0 in the Final in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with fellow future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the losing side. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. John Toshack reached a century of League appearances for us that day. Hunting a new record 1969 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, taking him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League with 234, still a club record. Setting another record 2020 - The reds beat Southampton 4-0 to Anfield to ensure that we defeated all our opponents in a top-flight League season for the first time, although the score was goalless at half time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring, before Jordan Henderson netted and Mohamed Salah added a brace. This ensured we had a 22-point lead at the top of the table, the greatest ever at the end of a day of top-flight football. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Željko Buvac was appointed Sporting Director of Dynamo Moskva. Robbie’s return 2006 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds, shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring in our home Premiership meeting with Birmingham City. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside, while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez’s hundredth in charge. Jamie Carragher played his 241st League game for the reds, a club Premiership record, while Vladimír Šmicer came on as a late substitute for Morientes to make his first appearance of the season. Spackman sold 1989 - Nigel Spackman was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. José Bosingwa amazingly escaped punishment for an assault on Yossi Benayoun right in front of the assistant referee in stoppage time. Alf off the mark 1933 – Outside-right Alf Hanson bagged the first of his 52 reds goals as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Anfield. George Camsell netted two of his nine goals past us, with Harold Blackmore bagging the last of his five against the reds. Forward Ted Hancock played his tenth and last reds game. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1972 - Christian Ziege was born in Berlin. He signed in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m and netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He also won the Bundesliga twice, the UEFA Cup and Serie A during his club playing career, as well as Euro ’96 with Germany. 1952 – Full-back John Webb was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in February 1969, making it onto the first-team bench six times in 1972/73 without making a senior appearance. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1974, later playing in Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. 1937 - Keeper Tony Waiters was born in Southport. He won five senior England caps in 1964 while playing for Blackpool. He left there in 1967 to take on a coaching role with the reds, but returned to playing with Burnley in 1970, playing 38 League games before becoming the Manager of Plymouth Argyle in 1972. 1886 – Full-back Harry Griffiths was born in Middlesbrough. He joined the reds in 1905, but only played six senior games before joining Chesterfield Town in June 1908. He later linked up with ex-red Maurice Parry and Alex Raisbeck at Partick Thistle. Ton up for Jim 1908 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his hundredth reds appearance as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Second Round, with Jack Cox heading in our equaliser late on after right-half Maurice Parry had conceded a penalty converted by Jack Hall. The visitors appealed in vain that reds keeper Sam Hardy had carried the ball over the line before scrambling it round the post. This was the first game in which Anfield’s new grandstand, where the Main Stand is today, was used. Reds farewells 2014 – Forward Tony Hateley died in Preston after a long illness. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. 1997 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game at Derby County, our last ever visit to the Baseball Ground. Beating the Mancs 1919 - Harold Wadsworth bagged the only goal of the game as we beat Manchester United in a Wartime League game at Old Trafford. Heading to the final 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored in a penalty shoot-out as Egypt beat Burkina Faso 4-3 on penalties after their Semi-final in Gabon ended 1-1 after extra time. Sadly, they lost to Cameroon in the Final. Internationals on target 2022 – Takumi Minamino netted as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Saitama, his last goal as a reds player, with future red Wataru Endō skippering the side. Philippe Coutinho struck as Brazil thumped Paraguay 4-0 in a qualifier in Belo Horizonte, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez on target as Uruguay beat Venezuela 4-1 in Montevideo. Luis Díaz won his first cap as a reds player as Colombia lost a qualifier 1-0 in Argentina. Fabinho and future red Darwin Núñez both also played for their countries that day. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino scored as Japan lost 3-1 to Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup Final in Abu Dhabi. 2004 - Ex-red Titi Camara grabbed a late equaliser for Guinea as they held the host nation to a 1-1 draw and secured their place in the Quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. 2015 – Kolo Touré faced ex-red Carl Medjani as Ivory Coast beat Algeria 3-1 at the same stage of this competition in Equatorial Guinea. On the move 2021 – Two centre-halves arrived on this day, with Ozan Kabak arriving on loan from Schalke 04 on loan, and Ben Davies signing from Preston North End for £500,000, with Sepp van den Berg joining the Lilywhites on a temporary basis in exchange. Kabak played thirteen times, with Davies failing to make a senior appearance and van den Berg playing sixteen games in this initial loan. Birthdays galore 1954 - Midfielder Jimmy Case was born in Liverpool. He signed from South Liverpool for a bargain £500 in May 1973 and bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 in August 1981. 1863 - Matt McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in 1899 but later served the reds as a Director, and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923. 1958 - Howard Gayle was born in Toxteth. The first black player to represent Liverpool in modern times, he signed professional terms in November 1977 and notched once in five first-team appearances before moving on to Birmingham City in January 1983 for £75,000. 2013 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil was born in Beckenham. He had enjoyed a successful playing career with the likes of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough, retiring in the summer of 2019. He joined the reds in August 2020, leaving the following February to take over as Senior First Team Coach at Bournemouth. Two keepers also share a birthday today. 1971 - Brad Friedel was born in Bay Village, Ohio. He made 31 first-team appearances for us after signing from US side Columbus Crew for £1m in December 1997, moving to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in November 2000. 1973 - Pegguy Arphexad was born in Guadeloupe. Our former reserve custodian signed on a free transfer in July 2000 but only played six senior reds games, although he claimed six winners’ medals from the bench in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003 after his contract had expired. The Saint departs 1971 - Ian St. John signed for Coventry City after a spell with Hellenic in South Africa. He had notched 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final. He had also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield since his arrival from Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. Euro disappointment 2016 – Daniel Sturridge gave us a half-time lead in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel, but we collapsed after the break to lose 3-1 with Jorge Moreno bagging a brace to add to a Kévin Gameiro strike. More forward departures 2004 - Emile Heskey was sold to Birmingham City for a fee rising to £6.25m after sixty goals in 223 reds games. He struck sixteen times in 78 games for the Blues before moving to Wigan Athletic for £5.5m in July 2006. 1971 - Steve Peplow left for Swindon Town after a successful loan spell. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1966 and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. Other reds signings 1927 - Forward Tom Devlin signed from Preston North End for £250. He was unable to make the first-team, unlike his brother, centre-forward Willie, who was at Anfield at the same time. He moved on to Swindon Town in July 1928. 1985 - Reserves defender Alex Watson signed for the reds as a professional. He only made nine first-team appearances, including our 1988 FA Charity Shield win, before joining Bournemouth in January 1991 for £150,000. The end of the road for A’Court 1963 - Alan A’Court played his 354th and final League game as we lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a game postponed from Boxing Day to finish the season in eighth place with George Graham netting the first of his four goals past us and Bobby Thomson also on target. He had played 381 games for us in total, scoring 63 goals, helping us to win the Second Division title in 1962. 1982 - Our only other first-class game on this day produced a goalless draw at Middlesbrough, the final game of a season in which we won the League by four points from Ipswich Town. On target 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted as England Under-17’s beat Portugal 2-0 in their European Championships Semi-final in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also in action. First and last caps 1935 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won his second and final cap as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam. 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won the first of his six caps for Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Czechoslovakia in Prague. 1939 – O’Mahoney played again as Ireland again drew 2-2 in a friendly, this time with Hungary in Budapest. 1950 - Bill Jones made his second and final senior appearance for England as they beat Belgium 4-1 in a friendly in Brussels. His grandson Rob went on to win eight full caps for England. 1949 - Bill also played for his country, when England B beat the Netherlands 4-0 in an unofficial international in Amsterdam. 2002 - Future red Djibril Cissé made his senior international debut as a substitute in France’s 2-1 defeat by Belgium at the Stade de France. On the same day, Vladimír Šmicer scored the only goal of the game as the Czech Republic beat World Cup-bound Italy in Prague, his twentieth senior goal for his country. Meanwhile, Dietmar Hamann starred in Germany’s 6-2 defeat of Austria in Leverkusen, playing alongside ex-red Christian Ziege. 1996 - Reds centre-back Mark Wright won his 45th and final full England cap as they beat Hungary 3-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Future red Paul Ince also played. 2016 – Midfielder Allan debuted for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with South Korea Under-19’s in Suwon. Into the book 2009 – The club launched its own official Facebook page, which now has over 38m followers. Ex-reds on the move 1999 - John Barnes was released by Charlton Athletic. He had made just two starts for the Addicks, plus a further ten appearances from the bench. His Charlton debut had been at home to the reds, as they won 1-0 following Jamie Carragher’s dubious dismissal. 2000 - Mike Marsh signed for Southport from Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer. He netted seven times in 37 games as they just missed out on promotion from the Conference. 2020 – Nigel Clough brought his second spell as Manager of Burton Albion to a close by mutual consent, due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2021 - Roy Hodgson announced he would leave as Manager of Crystal Palace at the end of the season. He led them to 54 wins in 162 games in charge in this first spell at his boyhood club. Walters starts out 1982 - Mark Walters signed as a professional for Aston Villa. He struck 48 times in 224 games for the Villains before moving to Rangers for £550,000 in December 1987. Released 2006 - It was announced that Ramon Calliste, Robbie Foy, Paul Lancaster, Paul Willis and Calum Woods were not being retained for the next season once their contracts expired later in the summer. 2007 - Ex-reds midfielder David Thompson was released by Bolton Wanderers after eight games in five months with the Trotters. 1907 – Forward John Carlin was sold to Preston North End after eight goals in 35 outings since signing from Barnsley in December 1902, helping us to the League title in 1906. Young champion 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann helped Germany Under-17’s to claim the European Championships as they beat their Dutch counterparts 2-1 in the Final in Magdeburg after extra time. 2010 – Andre Wisdom featured in the same tournament as England beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in a group game in Liechtenstein. On the same day, future red Gini Wijnaldum played as the Dutch Under-21’s lost 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Portugal. Also in international action 1974 – Emlyn Hughes captained England as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships, with future red Kenny Dalglish on the winning side. 1975 – Steve Heighway featured for the Republic of Ireland as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-1 to the USSR in Kyiv. 2006 – Carl Medjani skippered France Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in the Toulon Tournament. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez played for Uruguay Under-20’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the USA in Poland.
