Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 2008 – Centre-half Mor Talla Ndiaye was born. He signed from Amitié in his homeland in January 2026, where he had originally been a midfielder. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. In and out 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m and then was immediately loaned back. After arriving permanently that summer, he netted once in sixteen senior appearances, moving on to Porto permanently in July 2021 after a loan spell. On the same day, Luis Suárez was voted fifth in the Ballon d’Or, with fellow ex-red Javier Mascherano coming in fourteenth as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the trophy. Held by the Hatters 2008 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at League One side Luton Town, with a John Arne Riise own goal cancelling out a Peter Crouch strike. We comfortably won the replay, but were then eliminated from the FA Cup at home by Barnsley at the Fifth Round stage. Off at the double 1912 - William Stuart scored his only reds goal on his debut as we won 3-2 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. John Bovill struck his seventh and final reds goal in this game, with Jack Parkinson also on target as George Wynn nabbed a brace for the home side. Danny the champion 2008 - Centre-back Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year. He had played just 27 times for the reds in 2007, including the Champions League Final in Athens. Le debutant 2001 - Grégory Vignal made his reds bow as we beat Second Division Rotherham United 3-0 at home in an FA Cup Third Round encounter. Emile Heskey bagged a brace, to go with a rare Dietmar Hamann strike. Igor Bišcan was sent off as we began another Cup-winning run. Live on the Beeb 1984 - The first FA Cup tie outside the Final to be screened live in the UK was shown by the BBC on a Friday evening. Ian Rush netted a brace as we beat a Newcastle United side that included ex-reds Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott 4-0 in the Third Round, with Michael Robinson and Craig Johnston also on target. However, we lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round. Cup disappointment 1951 - We lost 3-1 at Norwich City, our first defeat in the FA Cup Third Round since we had also been knocked out by the Canaries fourteen years earlier. Tom Docherty netted twice, with Noel Kinsey also on target for the home side. Jack Balmer bagged our late consolation. Reds deaths 1989 – Keeper Dave Underwood died. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957. 2005 - The funeral of post-war left-back Eddie Spicer took place at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan, near Denbigh. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. Wartime goalscoring feats 1918 - Thomas Bennett scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture, grabbing a brace with right-half John Bamber also on target. 1940 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble as we won 7-3 at Manchester City, with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring twice apiece. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Chelsea at Anfield on this day in history. 1923 - Billy Lacey struck the only goal of our top-flight encounter late on, his 29th and last reds goal. Forward Jack Sambrook appeared for the second and final time. 1962 - We won an FA Cup Third Round meeting by the odd goal in seven, with Ian St. John netting twice and Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet, as we led 4-1 at the break. We were eventually knocked out by Preston North End in the Fifth Round. Bobby Tambling bagged the first two of his eight goals past us, with Barry Bridges also on target for the Londoners. Reds in charge 1993 - Ex-red Richard Money took over as boss of Sc***horpe United, having previously held the role in a Caretaker capacity while an Iron player. He led them to mid-table in the Fourth Division that season, and again the following year before he left that summer. 2009 – Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. Fagan for the Scots 1945 - Willie Fagan scored for a Scottish Services XI as they drew 2-2 with Belgium in Brussels. Fellow reds Jim Harley and Billy Liddell both also played. A big win 1894 - We won 4-1 at Rotherham Town in our first game on this day in history. James Stott grabbed a brace with Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also scoring as we conceded our first goal following six consecutive clean sheets, scored by Frank Turner Jr. Other reds games 1990 – Swansea City held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Vetch Field, trouncing them 8-0 in the Anfield replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1973 – Kevin Keegan headed in the only goal of our trip to West Ham United. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at Sheffield United, with Bert Oswald putting the Blades in front before Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson struck. Jack Pickering equalised late on with the last of his five goals past us. 1906 – We shared a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. 1900 – We lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Career extremes 2007 – Joe Allen signed as a professional for Swansea City, having been part of their youth set-up since the age of nine. He struck seven goals in 150 first-team appearances for the Swans before arriving at Anfield for £15m in August 2012. 2010 - Patrik Berger announced his retirement from football due to persistent knee injuries. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, and finished his career back with his first club, Sparta Praha. 2025 – Keeper Marcelo Pitaluga left the reds to return to his former club Fluminense in Brazil. On the same day, ex-red Robbie Keane was appointed Manager of Ferencváros in Hungary, leading them as they retained the Hungarian League title.
