Luis torments the Canaries again
2013 - Luis Suárez scored four sublime goals as we thumped Norwich City 5-1 at Anfield, his third hat-trick against the Canaries, becoming the first reds player to score three trebles against the same team. His third goal was his fiftieth League strike for the club, in his 86th Premiership game. He also set up Raheem Sterling for our fifth after Bradley Johnson had netted a late consolation.

More trebles for and against
1973 - Ian Callaghan bagged a hat-trick as we beat Hull City 3-1 in a League Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield, our first treble in this competition. Hull’s strike came courtesy of an Alec Lindsay own goal in a game that kicked off at 2pm on a Tuesday.
1909 - Albert Shepherd scored four goals for Newcastle United as they led 5-2 at half-time, some of his twelve strikes past us, with our goals coming from James Stewart and Jack Parkinson. The game eventually ended 6-5 to the reds, thanks to a Ronald Orr brace, a second from Parkinson and a late winner from Arthur Goddard, his fiftieth reds goal. Jimmy Howie also netted for the visitors.

Birth of the parson
1900 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister.
1951 - Kit Manager Graham Carter was born in St. Helens. Our former coach driver switched to this role in 1999 after driving the players around for more than twenty years.

Beaten in Belgium
1978 - RSC Anderlecht won 3-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Super Cup at the Stade Émile Versé with Jimmy Case nabbing our consolation. We won the return leg 2-1 at Anfield two weeks later, but we could not retain the trophy, losing 4-3 on aggregate. Ray Clemence played in a club record 67th consecutive European game in Brussels, but missed the return leg. Skipper Emlyn Hughes returned after more than two months out with a knee injury.

Double debutants
2002 - Neil Mellor and John Welsh both made their senior debuts as we faced Joe Royle’s Ipswich Town in the Fourth Round of the Worthington Cup at Anfield. El-Hadji Diouf netted from the spot to take the tie into extra-time, after a goal from Town’s Tommy Miller. We eventually triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out, with Diouf scoring the decisive kick.

We had twice previously visited Portman Road for First Division matches on this day in history.
1971 – We shared a goalless draw.
1976 – We lost 1-0 there, thanks to a goal from Paul Mariner.

Only DIC
2006 - The club announced that it had entered into a period of exclusive negotiations with DIC about possible investment. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “This is the latest step on the road of finding the long-term investment that the Club needs. DIC is a potential investor with the resources and philosophy that we believe could make them an ideal partner.”

A rare defeat
1982 - We suffered our only League defeat between October and April of that season, losing 1-0 at Norwich City with John Deehan bagging the last of his five goals against the reds.

Double defensive woe
1993 - Centre-backs Neil Ruddock and Mark Wright both scored own goals as we lost 3-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. Robbie Fowler nabbed our consolation, with Mark Bright also netting for the Owls.

Bamber’s bow
1915 - Right-half John Bamber played his first reds game in a Wartime League fixture against Bolton Wanderers. The game at Anfield ended 3-3, with William Banks, Fred Pagnam and Donald Mackinlay all on the scoresheet.

Shanks unveiled
1997 – The Bill Shankly statue was unveiled at Anfield.

Career endings
1937 – Irish right-back Billy Hood played the last of his three reds games in our 4-3 home defeat to Derby County. Alf Hanson struck before Berry Nieuwenhuys nabbed a brace. Ronnie Dix and Jack Nicholas each netted one of their four goals against the reds, with Dai Astley scoring one of his six past us and Charlie Napier also on target.
1997 - Paul Walsh was released by Portsmouth after two years there in his second spell, during which time he had notched five times in 22 games.

Spoils shared with the Clarets
We have been held at Anfield twice by Burnley in the First Division on this day in history.
1920 – The game ended goalless.
1948 - Cyril Done netted as we drew 1-1.
1943 - We visited Turf Moor for a Wartime League fixture with Stan Polk bagging the only goal of the game.

Souey’s half century
1985 - Ex-red Graeme Souness won his fiftieth cap for Scotland in Melbourne as he skippered them in their goalless draw with Australia in the first leg of a World Cup qualifying play-off. He was also booked in the game, as the Scots laid the groundwork for reaching the Finals in Mexico.
