New bosses
1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974.

2010 - Tom Werner took over as Chairman of the club, following Martin Broughton’s departure. The New York-born businessman co-founded Fenway Sports Group and is also Chairman of the Boston Red Sox.

King Billy’s treble
1951 - Billy Liddell scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we won 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur. Sonny Walters bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Bennett also on target.

Great evening for the kids
2004 - We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the Carling Cup, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle converting a late penalty to equalise Jermain Defoe’s goal at the end of extra time. The reds won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 as the away end rocked to the brand new ‘La Bamba’ song in honour of new boss Rafael Benítez. Stéphane Henchoz was making his 205th and final reds appearance, while David Raven and Mark Smyth both made their senior bows.

Jerzy’s nightmare
2002 - A Diego Forlán brace handed Manchester United a two-goal lead at Anfield, greatly assisted by Jerzy Dudek. A late Sami Hyypiä strike gave us hope, and Dietmar Hamann’s fierce drive hit the woodwork, but we lost 2-1. These were the first of Forlán’s four goals past us.

Reds farewells
2012 - Phil Taylor died aged 95. He signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight.

1962 - Left-winger Alan A'Court scored his 63rd and final reds goal as we beat Fulham 2-1 at Anfield in our first season back in the top flight. Roger Hunt also struck with Ronnie Moran missing a penalty.

Mølby off the mark
1984 - Jan Mølby bagged his first reds goal, although it was merely a consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. Future red David Speedie and Joe McLaughlin netted, with Kerry Dixon scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds.

Mauled by Tigers
2013 – We lost 3-1 at Hull City, the first time we had lost to the Tigers in seventeen meetings. They opened the scoring when a Jake Livermore strike was deflected off Martin Škrtel, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a free kick. David Meyler put the home side ahead before Škrtel diverted a shot from Tom Huddlestone into his own net for an own goal.

Diego born
1982 – Recent sub keeper Diego Cavalieri was born in São Paulo. He signed from Palmeiras in his native Brazil for £3.5m in July 2008, making just ten senior appearances, all in cup competitions, although he sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved on to Italian side Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010.

A winning debut
1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his League bow in our defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, with Peter Cormack bagging the only goal of the game. Chris Lawler missed this game through injury, having played in all of our previous 102 League games.

Razor off
1981 - Ray Kennedy was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half of our goalless League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal. Fortunately we won the replay the following week, en route to retaining the trophy.

Beating the Rams again and again
We have beaten Derby County three times on this day in history without conceding a goal.
2001 - Michael Owen’s poached effort gave us a win at Pride Park, although the reds had to thank Jerzy Dudek for a string of top-class saves, including one from a late Fabrizio Ravanelli penalty, to keep us top of the League.
1906 - Joe Hewitt nabbed the only goal of the game at the Baseball Ground.
1928 - Gordon Hodgson, Jimmy McDougall and James Clark struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield.

A European win
1965 - We beat Belgians Standard de Liège 3-1 at Anfield in our first game of a European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign that saw us reach the Final in only our second season in continental competition. Chris Lawler struck a brace that night, with Peter Thompson also netting in a very bad-tempered game.

Mixed fortunes against the Blades
We have faced Sheffield United three times over the years, winning just once.
1956 - Our most recent meeting was at Anfield, when Johnny Wheeler, Billy Liddell, Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court and Alan Arnell were all on target in a 5-1 Second Division victory. Jimmy Hagan’s consolation was one of his four strikes against the reds.
1923 - Harry Chambers grabbed our goal as we drew a top-flight meeting at Bramall Lane, with Fred Tunstall nabbing one of his eight goals past us.
1900 - Charles Satterthwaite was on target in a 2-1 home defeat, also in the First Division.

Big wins
1979 - We beat Middlesbrough 4-0 at Anfield, with the goals coming from Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, David Johnson and Ray Kennedy. Ray Clemence was presented with a specially inscribed carriage clock before the game to honour his achievement of only conceding sixteen goals in the 42 games of the last League campaign.
1917 - We trounced Blackburn Rovers 6-1 at Ewood Park in a Wartime League fixture, with Thomas Bennett bagging a brace and Harry Lewis, Arthur Metcalf, Jack Waine and Donald Mackinlay all netting.
1945 - We won another Wartime League match, beating Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Anfield thanks to a Billy Liddell brace and goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer.

Peter’s final cap
1971 – Future red Peter Cormack won his ninth and final cap for Scotland in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish also in action.

Most recently
2012 - Daniel Agger headed in the only goal of the game as we hosted Southampton in a Premiership fixture.
2008 – We were held to a goalless Premiership draw at Anfield by West Ham United as we went to the top of the table. A Kop mosaic in support of Michael Shields was held up prior to kick off.

In and out
2004 - Former reserves midfielder Leyton Maxwell signed for Mansfield Town. He only played one game for the Stags before moving to Rhyl the following year.
1997 - Icelandic forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason arrived at Anfield from Keflavík for £150,000. Unfortunately, he never broke into the reds first-team, returning to his old club three years later.
1993 - Jimmy Case joined Sittingbourne from Darlington on a free transfer. He only remained there a month before rejoining Brighton & Hove Albion.

On the move again
1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar was released from Sheffield Wednesday, having been with the Owls for just over two months, without making a senior appearance.
2012 – Ex-reds centre-half and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked as Manager of Valencia
