Transfer deadline day drama
2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record.
On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wanderers from Chelsea until the end of the season.
In comes Al
2007 - Álvaro Arbeloa signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m. He struck twice in 98 senior outings, playing right across the back four and impressing with his solid performances before moving to Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano signed on loan from West Ham United in a deal that was still to be approved by the Premier League. He netted twice in 139 outings in total, signing on permanently for £18.6m in February 2008. He left for Barcelona in a €22m in August 2010.
Also on the same day, young Spanish midfielder Francis Durán signed from Málaga for a compensation fee, while Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Huth arrived from Tacuary. Neither made the break-through at Anfield and have since moved on.
Goalscoring feats
1976 - John Toshack bagged a genuine hat-trick of right-foot and left-foot shots and then a header as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Upton Park. Kevin Keegan netted our other goal late on.
2015 – We beat the Hammers 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to second-half strikes by Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.
1959 - Terry Bleasdale scored an amazing eighteen goals as Liverpool Youth beat Pilkington Amateurs 19-0 in the Liverpool County F.A. Minor Cup 1st Round at Melwood.
Ton up
2017 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren reached a century of reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea, with Simon Mignolet saving a Diego Costa penalty. David Luiz gave the visitors the lead with an opportunistic free-kick, with Gini Wijnaldum heading in after the break.
Red villains
We have twice won 2-0 at Aston Villa on this day over the years.
1988 - The first occasion was in a live televised Fourth Round FA Cup tie on our way to the Final when John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored, with Bruce Grobbelaar recalled in goal following an injury that had seen Mike Hooper fill in for the previous four fixtures, as we secured a club record ninth consecutive clean sheet.
1996 - Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler gave us a Premiership victory in a game postponed from Boxing Day.
Death of Sir John
1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. He had overseen eleven League titles and four European Cups amongst our many honours during his seventeen years in charge of the club.
No change of ownership
2007 - DIC abandoned their proposed £450m takeover of the club, after David Moores decided to reconsider his options in the light of a revised bid from George Gillett.
Craig’s farewell
2012 - Craig Bellamy bagged his eighteenth and final reds goal after Andy Carroll had given us the lead at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dirk Kuyt then scored his fiftieth Premiership goal, our 500th League goal under Kenny Dalglish’s management to complete a 3-0 victory.
Portuguese arrivals
2002 - Abel Xavier made the short trip across Stanley Park for £800,000. He netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
2012 – Midfielder João Teixeira signed from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000. He netted once in eight senior outings before moving on to Porto in July 2016.
Derby stalemate
2004 - A very entertaining Anfield derby somehow ended goalless with Jerzy Dudek and especially Nigel Martyn pulling off a string of fine stops.
Clem’s League start
1970 - Ray Clemence made the first of his 470 League appearances for the reds as we lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.
Off on loan
2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, bagging just one goal in ten outings. He had only netted nine times in 66 reds games, although two thirds of these appearances came from off the bench. On the same day, reserves defender David Raven moved to Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season, after having only made four senior appearances for the reds.
2013 - Dani Pacheco joined S.D. Huesca on loan, netting five times in nineteen games. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Alou Diarra joined Stade Rennais from West Ham United on a temporary basis, playing twelve times.
2014 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo moved to Walsall on loan, netting once in fourteen outings.
2017 – Forward Jack Dunn joined Tranmere Rovers on loan, while ex-reds winger Sergi Canós left Norwich City to sign for Brentford and forward Jerome Sinclair joined Birmingham City on loan from Watford.
2019 – Canadian forward Liam Millar joined Kilmarnock on loan for the first time, netting once in fourteen outings. On the same day, midfielder Matty Virtue was sold to Blackpool, nabbing three goals in thirteen games before the end of the season. Ex-red Peter Crouch joined Burnley from Stoke City in a swap deal with Sam Vokes, failing to score in six appearances before retiring in the summer. Meanwhile, forward Jerome Sinclair joined Oxford United on loan from Watford, midfielder Jordan Rossiter made a temporary switch from Bury to Rangers, while centre-half Lloyd Jones re-joined Plymouth Argyle on loan from Luton Town.
2005 - Craig Bellamy joined Celtic from Newcastle United on a temporary basis, after 43 goals in 128 outings for the Geordies. He struck nine goals in fifteen games for the Bhoys, helping them to claim the Scottish FA Cup. On the same day, Jermaine Pennant joined Birmingham City on loan from Arsenal. He played twelve times in this spell before signing permanently the following July.
1997 - Lee Jones joined Wrexham for a third loan spell, making six first-team appearances this time around.
Out-foxed
1981 - Leicester City won 2-1 at Anfield, becoming the first side to complete a League double over us for six seasons, with our score coming from an Alan Young own goal. This was our first home defeat for three years, after 85 games without being beaten.
A good cup day
We have won all five of our FA Cup ties on this day over the years, conceding just once.
1990 - The most recent game saw us beat Norwich City 3-1 in a Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Steve Nicol and John Barnes scored, with Peter Beardsley adding a penalty. We made it as far as the Semi-final that season before losing out to Crystal Palace.
Up against ten
1993 - Nigel Winterburn was sent off for Arsenal as we won 1-0 at Highbury, the first dismissal for an opposing team against us in the newly renamed Premier League. John Barnes converted a penalty, while David James saved a Paul Merson spot-kick.
On our way to Wembley
1914 - We defeated non-League Gillingham 2-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Bob Ferguson bagging his second and final reds goal. Billy Lacey also struck as we reached the FA Cup Third Round. We made it to the Final for the first time that year, but sadly lost out to Burnley.
Joe born
1934 – Winger Joe Dickson was born in Liverpool. He bagged four goals in six reds games after signing pro terms in June 1952.

2000 - Tranmere Rovers boss John Aldridge was named the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year.
2002 - El-Hadji Diouf was named BBC African Player Of The Year, voted for by visitors to BBC Sport Online and listeners to the World Service’s Fast Track programme.

2013 – Second choice keeper Alexander Doni joined Botafogo on a free transfer, having not even made it to the bench that season after four first-team outings and 46 stints as an unused substitute in the previous campaign, having arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011. He had to retire seven months later due to heart problems. On the same day, winger Victor Moses joined Wigan Athletic from Crystal Palace for £2.5m after the Eagles went into administration. He had struck eleven times in 69 games in south London. Also on the move that day was Stephen Warnock, who left Aston Villa for Leeds United on a free transfer after four goals in 104 matches for the Villains. Meanwhile, Mario Balotelli joined AC Milan from Manchester City for an initial £19m after thirty goals in eighty games for the Sky Blues.
2006 - Danny Murphy joined Tottenham Hotspur from Charlton Athletic for a fee of up to £2m, having struck ten times in 64 games for the Addicks. On the same day, former reserves forward Steven Gillespie left Bristol City for Cheltenham Town on a free transfer, after two previous loan spells with the Gloucestershire outfit. He had netted just once in seventeen run-outs for City.
2007 - David Thompson joined Bolton Wanderers from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. He had played just fifteen times for Pompey since arriving the previous July, but made just eight appearances for the Trotters before being released at the end of the season.
2008 - Jari Litmanen joined Fulham on transfer deadline day, but failed to make a first-team appearance for them. Lee Peltier joined Yeovil Town permanently, after a successful loan spell, while Besian Idrizaj joined Wacker Innsbruck on loan. Paul Dalglish signed for Hibernian from Livingston, with keeper Tony Warner moving to Barnsley on loan from Fulham.
2012 - Djibril Cissé joined Queens Park Rangers from S.S. Lazio for £4m, after five goals in 27 outings. On the same day, reserves keeper Martin Hansen left Anfield for Viborg on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Sunderland on loan from VfL Wolfsburg.
2014 – Centre-half Jack Hobbs signed for Nottingham Forest from Hull City after a successful loan spell. Ex-reserves defender Gareth Roberts signed for Notts County having been released by Bury two weeks before. Tom Ince joined Crystal Palace on loan from Hull City, netting once in eight outings.
2018 – Centre-half Lloyd Jones left the club to sign for Luton Town, with midfielder Ovie Ejaria joining Sunderland on loan.

2000 - AS Monaco’s John Arne Riise made his international debut as he played in Norway’s goalless Nordic Cup draw in Iceland. Rigobert Song played in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on the same day as Cameroon lost a group game 1-0 to Togo in Ghana.
2017 – Future red Ki-Jana Hoever won his first cap for the Dutch Under-15’s in their 5-1 friendly defeat of the Republic of Ireland.
1998 – Future red Titi Camara played for Guinea as they lost a friendly 4-1 in Tunisia.
2002 – Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both featured in Senegal’s goalless Africa Cup of Nations group encounter with Tunisia in Mali.

Former strikers break out their passports
2005 - Nicolas Anelka joined Fenerbahçe SK from Manchester City for £7m. He struck fourteen times in 39 games for them before returning to England to join Bolton Wanderers in August 2006. Also on the move was ex-red Titi Camara who joined Ligue 2 side Amiens after two years in the Middle East. He bagged six goals in thirteen League games in his first season back in France.
Wright in the wrong
2006 - Mark Wright was sacked as Manager of Peterborough United for gross misconduct, after failing to appear before the board. It is alleged that he made a racist comment to one of his staff, although he always denied the charge.
Youngsters in action
2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they drew 1-1 with Ronald Huth’s Paraguay in the final phase of the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Venezuela, with both players being cautioned.

In comes Phil
2013 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho arrived from Internazionale for a £8.5m fee, having notched five times in fifty games for the Italian side since being signed by Rafael Benítez in July 2010. He netted 54 times in 201 reds games before moving on to Barcelona for a mammoth initial £105m fee in January 2018.
2012 - He joined R.C.D. Espanyol on loan from Internazionale, nabbing five goals in sixteen games.
Happy birthday Peter
1981 - Peter Crouch was born in Macclesfield. He arrived at Anfield for £7m in July 2005 after a successful season with Southampton, when he had bagged sixteen goals in 33 games as the Saints were relegated. He struck 42 times in 134 reds games, despite not notching in his first nineteen outings, helping us to claim the FA Cup and FA Community Shield, but was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008.
2001 – Midfielder Curtis Jones was born in Liverpool, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, netting his first reds goal to secure a derby win at Anfield at the same stage a year later. He has now struck six times in 32 reds games, helping us to claim the Premier League title last season.
Speeding in
1991 - David Speedie was signed from Coventry City by Kenny Dalglish for £700,000. He netted eight times in fourteen reds games before moving to Blackburn Rovers seven months later.

1929 - We also went out of the FA Cup to Bolton, losing a Fourth Round replay 5-2 at Burnden Park after extra time. John Lindsay grabbed the first of his three reds goals with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Harold Blackmore netted two of his five goals past us, with George Gibson also bagging one of his five against the reds and Jim McClelland and Billy Butler also scoring.
Fifty for Terry
1982 – Terry McDermott’s second goal was his fiftieth in the League for the reds as we won 3-0 at Aston Villa. Ian Rush had opened the scoring in the third minute.
Luis again
2013 - Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game as we drew 2-2 at Arsenal. He opened the scoring early on, with Jordan Henderson giving us a two-goal lead after an hour. However, Olivier Giroud headed in a free-kick, the first of his eight goals against us to date, before Theo Walcott struck three minutes later to level the match.
1971 – We beat Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from John Toshack and Tommy Smith.
Other reds birthdays
1992 – Former reserves midfielder Tom Ince was born in Stockport. He made just one senior reds appearance, as a substitute in our humiliating Carling Cup defeat by Northampton Town, moving on to Blackpool in August 2011.
1911 – Forward Jimmy Collins was born in London. He signed from Walsall in January 1936, but failed to score in seven reds games before joining Cardiff City the following May, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings.
George departs
1951 – George Kay stepped down as Manager due to illness, and sadly died just three years later. He had led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later as we won just 142 of his 357 games in charge. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley.
Only strike
1897 – Half-back Thomas Cleghorn bagged his only reds goal in our 4-3 defeat of Burton Swifts in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Inside-left Davy Hannah headed us ahead somewhat against the run of play with his twelfth and final reds goal. George Allan restored our lead after Joseph Dewey had equalised, although James Wyllie levelled the scores again. B. Evans gave the visitors the lead after half-time before Cleghorn pounced. Jimmy Ross struck the late winner.
Most recently
2018 – We won 3-0 at Huddersfield Town, with Emre Can and Roberto Firmino on target before the break. Mohamed Salah added a late penalty.
2016 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by West Ham United in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie with left-back José Enrique playing his 99th and last reds game, with forward Jerome Sinclair making his fifth and last appearance.
2010 – Pepe Reina played his hundredth consecutive League game as we beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring before we doubled our lead through an Emiliano Insúa strike that deflected in off Kevin Davies for an own goal.
2007 - Peter Crouch was on target on his 26th birthday as we won 2-1 at West Ham United, after Dirk Kuyt had opened the scoring straight after the break. The board members had met before the game to reconsider DIC’s offer for the club in the light of a potential new bid from George Gillett.
2008 - We also faced the Hammers, losing 1-0 at Upton Park to a last-minute Mark Noble penalty after Jamie Carragher had brought down Freddie Ljungberg in the box.
Emlyn at the wrong end
1968 - Tony Hateley, Peter Thompson, Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler all netted before Emlyn Hughes put through his own net as we beat Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 4-1 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. We eventually bowed out to West Bromwich Albion in the Sixth Round that season.
Ex-red strikers on the move again
2011 - Robbie Keane joined West Ham United on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. He netted just twice in ten outings for the Irons.
2001 - Stan Collymore joined Real Oviedo from Bradford City on a free transfer. He only lasted a little over two months in Spain before sensationally quitting the game.
2003 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Manchester City from Leeds United for £6m, after just fourteen months at Elland Road, in which time he had netted fourteen times in 33 games.
2007 - Sean Dundee signed for Stuttgarter Kickers from Kickers Offenbach. He netted once in five League games before returning to South Africa to sign for AmaZulu.
2009 - El-Hadji Diouf joined Blackburn Rovers from Sunderland for £2.5m, after failing to score in sixteen games for the Black Cats.

Twice apiece against our bitterest rivals
Both Everton and Manchester United have been our opponents twice on this day in history.
1902 - The first time came when we won 2-0 at Goodison in an FA Cup First Round replay, with goals from Alex Raisbeck and John ‘Sailor’ Hunter’s twelfth and last reds strike, our first Cup defeat of our neighbours. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Southampton at the next hurdle.
1932 - We returned to Goodison, but this time lost 2-1 in a League game, with Dave Wright nabbing our consolation. Tommy White struck one of his four goals past us, with Ted Critchley also scoring for the home side.
1909 - We beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield in the League, thanks to strikes from Arthur Goddard and Joe Hewitt, and a Tom Chorlton penalty. Sandy Turnbull netted one of his six goals against the reds.
1960 - We lost by the same score in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, with Johnny Wheeler grabbing our goal. Bobby Charlton bagged the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Warren Bradley also scoring for United.
Stumbling towards Wembley
1965 - We were held 1-1 at Anfield by Stockport County in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, who were then bottom of the Fourth Division. Bill Shankly missed the game to scout our next European opponents, so confident was he of victory. The game was played in front of 51,851 despite clashing with Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral on TV. County took a shock lead through Len White after just eighteen minutes, with Gordon Milne equalising early in the second half. We won the replay 2-0, en route to our first ever cup triumph.
Hosting the Foxes
2019 – We were held to a 1-1 draw as we extended our lead at the top of the table to five points in our ultimately foiled attempt to claim the League title for the first time since 1990. Sadio Mané struck early on, with Harry Maguire bagging a first-half stoppage-time equaliser. We were denied a seemingly clear-cut penalty in the second half for a foul on Naby Keïta.
2002 – Emile Heskey bagged the only goal of the game against his former club.
A Savage end
1964 - Right-half Ted Savage died. He played 105 reds games after signing from Lincoln City in May 1931. He made his debut as a forward, netting his only two goals for the club in a 4-0 defeat of Grimsby Town at Anfield that September. He moved on to Manchester United in January 1938.
2018 – The funeral for 1960’s keeper Tommy Lawrence was held at St Elphin’s Parish Church in Warrington.
A win on the south coast
1991 - Steve McMahon put us in front at Brighton & Hove Albion in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. However, Mike Small equalised to send the tie into extra time, with John Byrne putting the home side ahead. Ian Rush levelled the match before McMahon bagged his second with five minutes to go as we won 3-2. We were knocked out by Everton in the next round, after three meetings.
African action
2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played in Mali’s 3-1 defeat of Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Tunisia. Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played as Senegal beat Kenya 3-0 in another group game that day.
2008 - Ex-red Rigobert Song featured in the same competition as Cameroon beat Sudan 3-0 in Ghana.
2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played for the Ivory Coast in their 2-0 defeat of Angola in a group game in Equatorial Guinea.
2013 – Touré also played in a 2-2 draw with Algeria in South Africa.
1979 – Future red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Austria in Jaffa.

2012 – Reserves keeper Danny Ward signed from Wrexham for an initial £100,000. On the same day, former second-string left-winger Alex Kačaniklić joined Watford on loan from Fulham, netting once in twelve outings.
2013 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Carl Medjani joined AS Monaco from AJ Ajaccio after seven strikes in 149 League outings for the Corsican team.
2014 - Momo Sissoko signed for Levante U.D., playing ten times for them until the end of the season.
2015 – Jay Spearing joined Blackburn Rovers on loan from Bolton Wanderers, scoring once in fifteen games. On the same day, ex-reserves centre-half Rafael Páez joined S.D. Eibar on loan, although he was unable to play due to an administrative error.
2018 – Future red Diogo Jota’s transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers from Club Atlético de Madrid for a reported €14m was announced for the following July.
2020 – Left-back Brad Smith joined Cardiff City on loan from Bournemouth, but only played three times for the Bluebirds.

1897 - Reds centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League as they beat an Irish League side 2-0.

Thumping the blues
1955 - Perhaps our most memorable game on this day came when we triumphed 4-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Fourth Round, at a time when we were a division below the Blues, having been relegated the previous season. The goals came from Billy Liddell, Alan A’Court and a John Evans brace. Unfortunately, Huddersfield Town knocked us out at Anfield in the following round.
1944 - We also won there in a Wartime League fixture, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer on target as we beat Everton 3-2, with Don Welsh netting from the spot.
1947 - We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 there.
Momo moves
2008 - Momo Sissoko was sold to Juventus for £8.2m. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times, and scoring just once, despite suffering two serious injuries while at Anfield. He won his first cap while with the Turin outfit on the same day, in Mali’s 3-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana.
On the road to Cardiff once more
2006 - We won our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Portsmouth 2-1 in a Sunday night fixture screened live on the BBC. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring from the spot following a Dejan Stefanović handball before a John Arne Riise rocket handed us a two-goal half-time lead. Sean Davis headed Pompey back into the game, but we held on for the win. Jan Kromkamp made his first start in this match.
Heading to the Midlands
2004 - On-loan keeper Paul Jones left Anfield to sign for his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, in a £250,000 deal from Southampton. He had played just twice for the reds.
2018 – Daniel Sturridge joined West Bromwich Albion on loan, but injury restricted him to six appearances without scoring. On the same day, ex-reds centre-half Danny Wilson joined Colorado Rapids from Rangers.
Hosting the Gunners
2003 - Arsenal scored a breakaway goal through Robert Pires after nearly ten minutes of constant reds pressure at the start of our League meeting at Anfield, the first of his four strikes past us. The Gunners dominated the rest of the first half, before John Arne Riise equalised in the second period. Dennis Bergkamp put the North London side ahead again, with the aid of a deflection, but Emile Heskey’s late header earned us a share of the points.
1992 - We beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, when they were reigning champions, thanks to a Jan Mølby penalty and a goal from Ray Houghton.
Simply the reds against Hucknall
1898 - Our first ever first-class match on this day came against the quaintly-named Hucknall St. John’s, in an FA Cup First Round match at Anfield. The game ended in a 2-0 victory, with Frank Becton on target and centre-half Joe McQue grabbing his fourteenth and final reds goal. This was unsurprisingly the only time we have ever faced the Nottinghamshire side. We went out to Derby County in the Third Round that season.
Most recently
2020 – We won 2-0 at West Ham United’s London Stadium with Mohamed Salah converting a first-half penalty, with an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain strike sending the reds nineteen points clear at the top of the table.
Beating the Cumbrians twice
We have twice seen off Carlisle United in FA Cup encounters on this day over the years, on our way to Wembley in both seasons.
1974 - We won a Fourth Round replay 2-0 at Brunton Park, thanks to goals from Phil Boersma and John Toshack. The game kicked off at 2pm on a Tuesday due to the three-day working week.
1977 - Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Steve Heighway were all on target as we beat United 3-0 in a Fourth Round match at Anfield, with Heighway’s strike being our 400th in the competition.

1972 - We beat Crystal Palace 4-1 at Anfield after failing to score in each of our previous five League fixtures. Chris Lawler netted a brace, with Ian Callaghan and Kevin Keegan also on target on a day that began a run of 21 consecutive League wins at Anfield, which remains a top-flight record. Ex-red Peter Wall struck for the Eagles.
On our way to Wembley
1989 - We faced Millwall in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Front pair John Aldridge and Ian Rush both struck in front of the TV cameras as we won our first ever game at The Den 2-0. Alex Watson impressed at the back in a rare start, while future red Jimmy Carter appeared for Millwall.
Gary Mac in charge
2008 - Gary McAllister was appointed Manager of Leeds United. He led them to the Play-off Final that season, but they lost out to Doncaster Rovers. He was sacked in December of that year after a poor string of results, including an FA Cup Second Round defeat to non-League Histon.
Quasi debuts
1986 - Peter Beardsley, then with Newcastle United, won his first cap in England’s 4-0 friendly defeat of Egypt in Cairo. Fellow future red Mark Wright also played.
Barclay resigns
1892 – William Barclay tendered his resignation as Vice Chairman of Everton after John Houlding had asked the Blues to quit Anfield. It was accepted four days later, and he later worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the reds’ existence.

2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah won his fiftieth cap for Egypt as they beat Morocco 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Gabon.
2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses converted two spot-kicks as Nigeria beat Ethiopia 2-0 in a group stage game in South Africa.
On the move
2009 – Future red Jordan Henderson joined Coventry City on loan from Sunderland. He struck once in thirteen outings for the Sky Blues.
2007 - Former reserves midfielder David Mannix signed for Norwegian side Ham-Kam. He made thirteen League appearances as they were promoted back into the top flight, re-joining Accrington Stanley in January 2008.
2013 - Keeper Charles Itandje signed for PAOK, playing ten times in his first campaign there.
2016 – Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh joined Qatari side Al-Gharafa from Sporting Kansas City.
2019 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori left Reading to sign for Sporting Clube de Portugal back in his homeland, after scoring once in 64 games for the Royals since arriving from the reds for a reported £3.75m in January 2017.

1991 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was born in Ciudad de Mendoza. He signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2007 but failed to break through to our first team, moving on to Blackpool in July 2011.

Ex-red Rigobert Song has played for Cameroon in Africa Cup of Nations Finals matches three times on this day in history.
2002 - They defeated Togo 3-0 in Mali with Song the skipper. On the same day, Kolo Touré won his last cap as an ASEC Mimosas player as the Ivory Coast lost 3-1 to DR Congo in the same tournament.
2004 – He captained them to a 5-3 victory over Zimbabwe in Tunisia.
2006 - He won his 102nd cap as they beat Congo-Kinshasa 2-0 in Cairo. Ex-red Frode Kippe also played for his country on that day.
Youngsters in Egypt
2003 - Future red Arnaud Bühler took part in an amazing UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup match in Egypt which was abandoned after 83 minutes with the score at 1-1. Burkina Faso had four players sent off against Switzerland’s Under-17’s, and then another player got injured but they had used both their permitted substitutions. On the same day, David Raven played in England’s 1-0 defeat of host nation Egypt, while future reds centre-back Carl Medjani skippered France as they beat Mali 2-1. Also in action that day was future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos as the Greek senior team beat Cyprus 2-1 in a friendly in Larnaka.

2001 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won the second of his two caps for Italy Under-17’s in their 3-0 victory over Mali.
2005 – Future red Daniel Agger played as Denmark Uncer-21’s lost 3-2 to Guatemala in an unofficial international in Fort Lauderdale.

2011 – Harry Kewell played for Australia as they lost 1-0 to Japan in the AFC Asian Cup Final in Qatar.

Happy birthday Carra
1978 - Jamie Carragher was born in Bootle. The tough defender bagged five goals in 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, leaving him second in the list for the club’s all-time appearance holders. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and two FA Charity/Community Shields.
In steps Royston
1994 - Roy Evans took over as Manager, after almost thirty years at Anfield. He remained in charge for nearly five years, leading us to a Coca-Cola Cup win in 1995, and the FA Cup Final a year later, although he struggled to deliver a consistent Championship challenge.
Trouncing the Blues
2014 – We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield, our biggest derby win since 1982. Daniel Sturridge sent a penalty over the bar that would have completed his hat-trick. Steven Gerrard headed in the opener, with Luis Suárez bagging the fourth. Luis Alberto came off the bench to play his twelfth and final reds game.
Bimpson arrives
1953 – Forward Louis Bimpson signed from Burscough on a free transfer. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances, before joining Blackburn Rovers in November 1959.
Heading towards Wembley
2012 – We beat Manchester United 2-1 in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Daniel Agger headed the reds in front, with Dirk Kuyt bagging the late winner after Ji-Sung Park had levelled before the break.
2017 – We were humbled at home at the same stage by Wolverhampton Wanderers, succumbing 2-1. Divock Origi netted our late consolation.
Stéph heads north
2005 - Stéphane Henchoz joined Celtic on a free transfer, after failing to score in 205 reds appearances. He was a defensive rock for us, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. He only made eight senior appearances in his time at Parkhead, before returning south of the border to join Wigan Athletic in July of that year.
Robbie’s farewell
2009 – We suffered our third straight 1-1 draw, and fourth consecutive stalemate in all competitions as we visited Wigan Athletic. Robbie Keane played his 28th and final reds game as a late substitute for Steven Gerrard. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead, with Fernando Torres hitting the post before Lucas gave away a very late penalty that Mido converted, so scoring against the reds for his second club in the League that season after netting for Middlesbrough at Anfield.

2011 – Fernando Torres submitted a written transfer request. He had struck an impressive 81 times in 142 reds games since his club record £20.2m signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2007. He was sold to Chelsea for a British record £50m fee three days later. On the same day, Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson left Anfield to join Hibernian, for whom he has so far netted once in 34 outings. Meanwhile, ex-reds forward Krisztián Németh joined Olympiacos Volos on loan from fellow Greek side Olympiacos. He struck once in thirteen League matches for them.
Tosh the boss, briefly
1984 - John Toshack was appointed part-time Manager of Wales. He only stayed in charge for 47 days, and just the one game, later returning for a second spell as boss.
2003 - He resigned as Manager of Italian Serie B side Calcio Catania after just two months in the hot seat there, following criticism from the club’s President.
Red centurions
1961 - Alan A’Court played his 300th reds game. However, it was an unhappy milestone for the forward as we lost an FA Cup Fourth Round tie 2-0 to Sunderland at Anfield.
1922 - Left-half Tom Bromilow made his hundredth appearance as we lost an FA Cup Second Round match 1-0 at home to West Bromwich Albion, with Stan Davies netting the first of his four goals against the reds. The Baggies went out at the next hurdle themselves.
1939 - Matt Busby played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 1-1 draw at Leeds United, with Jack Balmer bagging our goal late on after ex-red Gordon Hodgson had given the home side the lead.
A poor goalscoring day
Amazingly, we did not score in each of six consecutive matches played on this day.
1956 – Our most recent goals on this day before our 2009 trip to Wigan came in an FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Sc***horpe United that ended in a 3-3 draw at Anfield. Two goals came from the legendary Billy Liddell, with Jimmy Payne netting the other as John Davies bagged a brace for the visitors, with Jack Gregory also on target for the Iron. We won the replay 2-1 but went out to Manchester City in the next round.
In fact, we have only won four of our fifteen matches on this day.
1950 - We beat Exeter City 3-1 at Anfield in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. Kevin Baron, Willie Fagan and Jimmy Payne grabbed our goals that day as we played in white. We reached our second Final that year, losing out at Wembley to Arsenal.

2016 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates joined Sporting Clube de Portugal on loan from Sunderland, playing fourteen times in this first temporary spell in Lisbon.
2014 – Ex-reserves keeper Dean Bouzanis signed for Carlisle United, but failed to play a senior game for the Cumbrians.
2010 – Reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined League One side Huddersfield Town on loan. He netted his only goal for the Terriers on his debut, the only score in their win at Yeovil Town. He made four starts and eight substitute appearances as they reached the play-offs, as well as being sent off once in his time at the Galpharm Stadium.
2008 – Future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Tottenham Hotspur from Middlesbrough for a reported £8m, scoring three times in 65 games before being released in June 2011.
1999 – Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Barnsley from Queens Park Rangers for £1.5m. He struck forty times in 172 games for the Tykes before Blackpool on a free transfer in July 2003.

1998 - Future red Bernard Diomède won his first full international cap as France beat Spain 1-0 in a friendly at the Stade de France.
2003 - Ex-red Frode Kippe played his first senior game for Norway in their 2-1 friendly win in Oman, although the opposition was an Under-23’s team.
2005 - He also featured for them as they were held to a goalless draw in Jordan.
1986 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both played in Israel’s 1-0 friendly defeat to Scotland in Tel-Aviv.
2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino played for Japan as they beat Iran 3-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Semi-final in the United Arab Emirates.
Tosh departs
1973 - Forward Tosh Johnson died in Monsall Hospital in Manchester. He crossed the park in March 1934, having claimed the First and Second Division titles and FA Cup with the Blues, and netted eight times in 38 reds games before joining Darwen in August 1936.
Bowyer’s last
1911 - Forward Sam Bowyer struck the final one of his sixteen reds goals, a last-minute equaliser as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Manchester City in a top-flight encounter. On the same day, Ernest Peake played for Wales as they won 2-1 in the British International Championships in Ireland, with future red Billy Lacey on the losing side.
On Song three times
1998 - Future red Rigobert Song struck his first international goal, his only one as a Metz player, the only score in Cameroon’s home friendly with Angola in Garoua.
He also represented his country twice more on this day in history.
2000 - He played in a 3-0 Africa Cup of Nations win over Ivory Coast in Ghana
