Yossi at the treble
2008 - Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick as we twice came from behind to beat non-League Havant & Waterlooville 5-2 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. We first went behind through Richard Pacquette, before Lucas Leiva became the first Brazilian to score for the club. A Martin Škrtel own goal put the Blue Square South side ahead again before the Israeli’s treble. Peter Crouch added a gloss to proceedings with a last-minute strike.

Brendan’s big day
1973 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers was born in Carnlough, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland. He became a father for the first time, to Anton, on his twentieth birthday. He took over at Anfield in June 2012, leading us to 85 victories in 166 games in charge before being sacked in October 2015.

Rushie’s first treble
1982 - Ian Rush scored a second-half hat-trick at Meadow Lane, his first of sixteen for the reds, as we beat Notts County 4-0 in the League. Ronnie Whelan opened the scoring before the break, while the home side missed a penalty through Ray O’Brien. We had started the day in seventh place in the League, but went on to claim the title for a thirteenth time that season.

Razor sheathed
1982 – Midfielder Ray Kennedy re-joined his former clubmate John Toshack at Swansea City. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, striking 72 times in 393 reds games.

We’ve only got one Song
1999 - Rigobert Song signed from Italian club Salernitana for £2.6m. Rigo made 38 reds appearances without scoring, before joining West Ham United as part of a joint deal with Titi Camara in November 2000.
1928 – Forward Bob Clark signed from Newcastle United for £3,000, having helped them to the League title the year before. He struck eleven times in 42 outings before joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931.

On the way to Wembley
2016 – We lost 1-0 at home to Stoke City in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, with the tie heading to penalties after extra time after Marko Arnautović had struck for the Potters. We won the shoot-out 6-5 with Emre Can the only red to fail, as Adam Lallana, Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen converting as Simon Mignolet saved two of Stoke’s efforts. Lucas was making his 300th reds appearance.

1986 - We won 2-1 at Chelsea in another Fourth Round tie on our way to Wembley, with Ian Rush and Mark Lawrenson nabbing the goals either side of half time. Future red David Speedie netted the Blues’ consolation as the home side had to play for much of the game with just ten men due to injuries to both Kerry Dixon and Colin Lee.
1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in a rainstorm at home by Carlisle United in our Fourth Round tie. Fortunately, we won the replay three days later in Cumbria.

Do one Ron
1994 - Ronnie Rosenthal was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after 22 goals in 97 reds games. He stayed at White Hart Lane for three and a half years, helping them to an FA Cup win at Anfield in March 1995.

Fernando’s farewell
2011 – Fernando Torres had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside as he played his 142nd and last reds game. John Pantsil’s own goal was the only score of our League meeting with Fulham at Anfield, postponed from the previous month.

Cup disaster at the Bridge
1997 - We took a 2-0 half-time lead at Stamford Bridge in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with goals from Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore. However, Chelsea stormed back in the second half through one of Mark Hughes’s nine goals against us, a Gianfranco Zola strike and a brace from Gianluca Vialli to win 4-2.

Worst ever in the cup
1946 - Bolton Wanderers inflicted our worst ever FA Cup defeat on us as we lost 5-0 at Burnden Park in a Fourth Round first leg match, with keeper Alf Hobson playing his 28th and last reds game and wing-half Harry Kaye making his debut. Ray Westwood grabbed a hat-trick, one of only two we have ever conceded in the FA Cup and the last of his nine strikes past us, with the legendary Nat Lofthouse bagging the first two of his eight goals against the reds.
1929 - We faced Wanderers again at this stage of the competition, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield. Unfortunately, we went out 5-2 in the replay.
1957 - We also lost a friendly 5-3 at Burnden Park when Alan Arnell netted a brace and Alan A’Court also scored.

2020 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Shrewsbury Town, going two goals up through an early Curtis Jones strike and a Donald Love own goal immediately after the break. However, a Jason Cummings brace in the space of ten minutes secured the Shrews an Anfield replay. Left-back Yasser Larouci made his second and final senior appearance in this game.

Kenny’s century
1987 - Kenny Dalglish took charge of his hundredth game as Manager in our FA Cup Third Round replay against Luton Town at Anfield that ended goalless after two hours, having originally been postponed two weeks earlier.

Stalemate
2010 - We were held to a drab goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers with Maxi Rodríguez making his first reds start.

On the move
2009 - Krisztián Németh joined Blackpool on loan, while Craig Lindfield made a temporary move to Accrington Stanley. Lindfield only bagged two goals in twenty outings for the League Two side, while Németh only made one appearance, fracturing his cheek bone inside a minute.
2012 - Németh joined Dutch side RKC Waalwijk on loan from Olympiacos, bagging four goals in seventeen outings.

2006 - Darren Potter joined Southampton on loan. He turned out twelve times for the Saints before returning to Anfield four months later.
2013 - Ex-reds centre-forward Nicolas Anelka joined Juventus on loan from Shanghai Shenhua, but only played three times without scoring.
2014 – Future reds forward Mohamed Salah left Basel to sign for Chelsea for a reported £11m, although eh only struck twice in nineteen games before being sold to Roma for a reported €15m in August 2016.
2016 - Ex-reds left-winger Albert Riera signed for Slovenian side Koper, playing just once before being released six months later.
2018 - Stephen Warnock re-joined Bradford City on loan from Burton Albion, playing thirteen times in his second spell with the Bantams.

Red birthdays
1876 - Keeper Bill Perkins was born in Kettering. He went on to play 117 times after signing from Luton Town in March 1899, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. He returned to the amateur game in 1903, joining Northampton Town.
1934 - Centre-half Joe Maloney was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior appearances before moving to Shrewsbury Town in July 1954, for whom he played 237 League games.

John’s bow
1907 - Outside-right John McKenna played his only reds game in our 2-0 home defeat of Birmingham City. Bill McPherson and Jack Parkinson struck the goals.

Other cup wins
1980 - We won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Fourth Round just four days after losing there in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final, with Terry McDermott netting from the spot to add to a Kenny Dalglish goal. We went out to Arsenal in the Semi-final that season, after three replays.
1938 - A Tom Johnson own goal handed us victory in our Fourth Round replay at Anfield against Sheffield United. However, we lost at home to Huddersfield Town at the next hurdle.

Mixed fortunes against the Mancs
1895 – We lost 3-0 to Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known, in a Palatine League game at Bank Street.
1918 – We won a Wartime League game 2-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf.

Double debutants
1989 – Future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen both won their first caps for Norway Under-20’s as they lost 3-0 to host nation Portugal in a tournament game in Lisbon.

Kirks out again
2003 - Chris Kirkland suffered a posterior knee ligament injury in our goalless FA Cup Fourth Round draw at Crystal Palace, keeping him out of the side for nine months. Worse was to follow, as we lost the Anfield replay.

Roy in charge
Roy Hodgson has four times taken charge of an international game on this day in history, including in three consecutive years.
1992 – Switzerland beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in a friendly in Dubai in his first game in charge of the Swiss.
1993 – Switzerland beat Hong Kong 3-2 in an unofficial international.
1994 – The Swiss thumped Mexico 5-1 in a friendly in the USA.
2003 – Hodgson took charge of the United Arab Emirates as they drew 1-1 with Norway in Sharjah.

Senegalese double
Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf have both featured for Senegal twice in the Africa Cup of Nations on this day in history.
2002 - They helped their country to a 1-0 victory over Zambia in Mali.
2004 - They were held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso in Tunisia. Future red Momo Sissoko scored as Mali beat Kenya 3-1 in another group game that day.

2008 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his 114th cap while playing in the same competition as Cameroon thumped Zambia 5-1 in a group game in Ghana.
2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast beat Burkina Faso 2-0 in a group game in Equatorial Guinea.
2022 – Mohamed Salah captained his country and scored in the shoot-out after Egypt had been held to a goalless draw by the Ivory Coast in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals Round of 16 game in Cameroon, as they progressed 5-4 on penalties.

1991 – We were held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, with an Ian Rush bagging a brace to hand us a two-goal lead. We won the replay, but were knocked out at Everton at the next hurdle.
1963 – We drew 1-1 at Burnley at the same stage with Kevin Lewis scoring our goal.
1952 – We lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in a top-flight meeting in a snowy L4, with Billy Liddell opening the scoring. Johnny Dixon nabbed one of his four goals past us, with Colin Gibson also on target before the break.
1935 – We lost 1-0 in a Fourth Round tie at Blackburn Rovers.
1924 – Manchester City held us to a goalless League draw at Anfield.

2005 - Harry Kewell was presented with the Young Australian Achiever In The UK award in London.

1903 - Reds winger Arthur Goddard played for a North representative team as they beat a South side 2-1.

Youngsters in action
2005 - Future loanee keeper Daniele Padelli won his first cap for Italy Under-20’s as they lost 3-1 in Malta. On the same day, academy defender Jordan Holmes appeared for England Under-17’s as they beat France 3-1 in the Algarve Tournament.
2009 – Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay as they trounced Bolivia 5-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela.

1972 – Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland Under-23’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Wales in Aberdeen.
1977 – Future red Avi Cohen played for Israel in their 1-1 draw with Greece in Tel-Aviv.
2017 – Future red Luis Díaz featured for Colombia Under-20’s as they beat Chile 1-0 in a South American Championships group game in Ecuador.
