1900 - Forward Sam Raybould made his reds debut as a Hugh Morgan brace condemned West Bromwich Albion to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. He went on to net 130 times in 226 reds games, becoming the first player to bag a hundred League goals for the club.
Arrivals from Spain
2010 – Winger Maxi Rodríguez signed for free from Club Atlético de Madrid. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings before returning to Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina in July 2012.
2005 - Fernando Morientes signed from Real Madrid for £6.3m. He netted just twelve goals in 61 reds games, helping us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup before moving on to Valencia in July 2006, where he regained his scoring touch.
Birth and death
1984 - Tommy Younger died. He made 127 appearances in our goal after signing from Hibernian for £9,000 in June 1956, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, later becoming the President of the Scottish FA.
1875 – Half-back Barney Battles was born in Springburn, Glasgow. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later.
The legend returns
2003 - Ian Rush returned to Liverpool as a part-time specialist striking coach, a role he only occupied for around a year. His club record 346 strikes in 660 games had helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup.
2013 – Slovakian centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-1 at Manchester United. Robin van Persie scored one of his seven goals past us before Nemanja Vidić deflected in a Patrice Evra header from a free-kick, with substitute Daniel Sturridge nabbing our consolation.
2016 - Centre-half Steven Caulker made his reds bow in our 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Anfield. Roberto Firmino and Olivier Giroud each bagged a brace, with the latter grabbing two of his eight past us to date, with Aaron Ramsey also on target. Joe Allen struck a stoppage time equaliser.
1993 - Second Division Bolton Wanderers knocked us out of the FA Cup at Anfield, winning our Third Round replay 2-0. John McGinlay nodded the visitors in front inside three minutes, with Andy Walker scoring the second with his head late on. Robbie Fowler made the bench for the first time, while Michael Thomas was ruled out for the rest of the season after snapping an Achilles tendon.
2010 – We were dumped out of the Cup in another replay at the same stage, as Reading won 2-1 at Anfield. A Ryan Bertrand own goal put us in front on the stroke of half time, but the Championship strugglers equalised at the death after Yossi Benayoun gave away a penalty converted by Gylfi Sigurðsson, the first of his four goals against us to date, with both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard having to be withdrawn early due to injuries. Unfortunately, the visitors gained a deserved victory when Shane Long headed the extra time winner, one of his four strikes against the reds.
1912 - Outside-right Arthur Goddard appeared in his 23rd consecutive FA Cup match for the reds as a Jack Parkinson goal gave us a First Round home win over Leyton. Unfortunately, we went out at Fulham at the next hurdle.
1926 – We played our hundredth FA Cup match, when a Dick Forshaw goal was enough to hand us victory over Southampton in a Third Round replay at Anfield. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at the next hurdle at Fulham.
Seeing off the Villa
2001 - A brace from Danny Murphy and an unstoppable shot past ex-red David James from Steven Gerrard condemned Aston Villa to a 3-0 defeat at Villa Park, with their new signing Juan Pablo Angel watching from the stands. Jari Litmanen made his first reds start in this game.
1906 – Alf West had a penalty saved in each half as we beat Leicester Fosse 2-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Sam Raybould and Arthur Goddard netted for the reds, with Billy Bannister also failing to convert a spot-kick for the visitors.
1951 – Forward Don Woan played the first of just two reds games as we won 2-1 at Derby County in a top-flight encounter. Inside-forward Jack Haigh bagged his first reds goal with Billy Liddell also on target as we completed our first League double over the Rams since April 1929.
Rescuing a point at Highbury
2002 - John Arne Riise latched onto a sensational long pass from Steven Gerrard to strike past Stuart Taylor in front of the North Bank to hand us a 1-1 draw, after Freddie Ljungberg had opened the scoring for Arsenal.
1923 - We also drew with the Gunners, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield in the First Round of the FA Cup. We won the replay, but went out in the Third Round at home to Sheffield United.
1962 - We saw off Norwich City at Anfield by the odd goal in nine on our way to the Second Division championship. Alan A’Court netted in addition to braces from both Jimmy Melia and Roger Hunt. Terry Allcock bagged a treble for the Canaries, the most recent player to score a hat-trick at Anfield and still end up on the losing side, with Jimmy Conway also on target.
1894 - We trounced Rotherham Town 5-1 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture at Anfield, having won 4-1 in the reverse fixture the previous week. David Henderson and Harry Bradshaw both netted braces, with Hugh McQueen also on target.
Reds in charge
2006 - Steve Staunton was appointed Manager of the Republic of Ireland. He led them to just six victories in his seventeen games in charge. Fellow ex-red Kevin MacDonald was appointed as one of his coaches at the same time.
2006 - Rafael Benítez was named Barclays Manager of the Month for the second month running, after four League wins out of four in December.
2010 – Standard de Liège forward Milan Jovanović was named Jupiler League Player of the Year in Belgium.
On the move
2006 - Don Hutchison joined Coventry City on a free transfer from Millwall after a successful loan spell. He had struck twice in fourteen games for the Lions and grabbed four goals in forty outings for the Sky Blues before being struck down by serious injury.
2011 – Reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined Charlton Athletic on loan. He netted three times in 21 outings for the Addicks.
2015 – Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell resigned as Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion, just seven days after being appointed, having already been asked to take a pay cut.
2017 – Left-back Joe Maguire moved on to Fleetwood Town, so far making nine senior appearances for the Cod Army.
2020 – Centre-half Nathaniel Phillips re-joined VfB Stuttgart on loan after making one senior appearance and two outings on the bench in between spells in Germany. On the same day, ex-reds keeper Pepe Reina moved to Aston Villa until the end of the season.
2011 - Ryan Babel admitted an FA charge for improper conduct relating to tweeting about referee Howard Webb after the recent FA Cup defeat at Manchester United.
1996 - Future red Rigobert Song played as Cameroon lost 3-0 to host nation South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Johannesburg.
2000 - Song played in a goalless friendly draw in Senegal.
2010 – Now having left the reds, he featured again in a 1-0 defeat to Gabon in a Finals game in Angola.
2012 – Future red Kolo Touré represented the Ivory Coast as they beat Tunisia 2-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi.
2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva captained Brazil Under-20’s as they beat Bolivia 3-0 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Paraguay, despite having a man sent off.
2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino played for Japan as they beat Oman 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Abu Dhabi.
