Hill's was definitely a dry lap. Mansell was just his ultra-smooth driving self. People in the UK forget how brilliant a driver Mansell is just because he's a boring b*****d.

I caught just the very end of it when they were saying that because it was built as a stg£5m technical exercise it'd probably be the best car they'll ever get to drive in their lifetimes, the Bugatti.

What made it so amazing, like, what did they do with it?

I was raging for missing it, it was like seeing Clarkson's big stupid face in clown make-up going ?Woooowwww, kids, they'll never let us show that again!?

There are usually repeats through the week and possible downloads on the bbc site, but basically, VW have created a 1000bhp super car that is capable of 400kmh. The engineering tasks implicit in getting that to work are akin to what the Brits and French did for Concorde i.e Go above and beyond the recognised limitations of conventional thinking in the specific industry. The gearbox was used as an example: It has to be better at handling more power than an F1 gearbox, last 10-15 years instead of just the usual 4 hours an F1 box ahs to do and also weigh as little as possible.

Its a giant leap forward in what's possible, but given the safety and environmental issues that are dictating the progress of car design it is probably a leap in a soon to be prohibited direction.

Yeah, Hammond and the hairy guy drove it back to the factory from London with a police escort and free reign on the motorways, Clarkson raced them on a Raleigh ten-speed. Needless to say Clarkson won.

It has been "limited" to 252mph anyway and no, they didn't let any of them drive it anywhere near that. Although Clarkson did get from Dijon to Calais at a helluva lick...
