Forumite self-censorship

here's an interesting one. Will really sort out the PC men from the boys just playing at it

sort of like a continuation of some of the themes discussed in the wake of that clothing ad or when Griezman blacked up

there's all sorts of stuff in music film, TV. even Shakespeare plays, that contains items ranging from the borderline to the unacceptable (by anyone's definition)

so are there things you used to listen to or watch that you don't anymore, even if you used to really enjoy them, because they are not PC?

obvious example is Til Death Do Us Part but there are hundreds

and you can keep saying "that was always s*** regardless" but somewhere along the line there will be stuff you used to enjoy, or still do if you don't think about it too much

as an example, was putting together my boxing playlist and came across this not-listened-to-for-a-long-time gem

define too much?

There's a lot of dancehall I don't listen to anymore because of the homophobia but there's a lot of hip hop I do despite the misogyny. Some of it is how it's done and some of it is me not being consistent but I like what I like and I play what I like regardless of whether it's PC or not.

Used to enjoy watching Miss World every now and then but got to about 30 and the contestants just seemed like kids.  Now I'm getting that way with porn.  They seem young and we all now know the seedy side behind the camera of drugs, abuse, manipulation of stardom dreams etc.

Also, whilst I've never been a big user of swearwords I have really cut back on my use and find myself more & more aghast at their use.  I'll use the odd **** on here but that's more out of habit.  And I've grown to really detest the use of the word c*** whereas half of my posts during the Hodgson era would have contained it.

well that Ice-Cube song

"cos you let a Jew break up my crew"  - one of 3 anti-semitisms iirc - and I found myself humming along with it

which is kinda ridiculous

too much means you can watch or listen to stuff and let things wash over you but it might affect you if you engage too much

like a PC equivalent of suspending disbelief

hip hop has truckloads of misogyny and homophobia and racism

I think it's too much to just ignore

you have to find a way of justifying it through context

It's hard, there are metal musicians whose music I like but they are nazis, so I don't listen to the music anymore.

I used to listen to a fair amount of hip hop from members/supporters of the Nation of Islam, which is a horrible racist, anti-semitic organisation. I would find it hard to support that now, but I'm probably not turning off any Kam or Da Lench Mob tracks that pop up in a playlist.

Where do we draw the line? John Lennon was a dick with his disability shtick, violent youth and adultery. But does his 'good' outweigh his failings?

Is it ok to listen to Morrissey's stuff when his dubious comments were every few years rather than whenever his mouth seems to open?

I know I've acted like a dick in my past and will probably slip again but I don't think many would judge me a c***.

How much of a dick is needed but still be a failing human and how much dick makes you a c***?

Philosophy, eh?

Dig out the old Gary Glitter 7"s now and again

Gary did the same thing himself quite often.

The other half was t***.

The f***ing c***ing owl-faced t***.  F*** off Bootser, you've f***ing pulled me back in.

Should have been an emoji in that?
