Happy birthdays
1937 - Right-half Gordon Milne was born in Preston. He played 282 times for us after signing for a club record £16,000 from Preston North End in August 1960, netting eighteen times and winning the League title twice, as well as the Second Division championship before joining Blackpool in May 1967. He also won fourteen England caps, and later successfully managed Coventry City and Leicester City.

1991 – Italian forward Fabio Borini was born in Bentivoglio. He arrived from Roma for £10.4m in July 2012 to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. He struck only three times in 38 reds games, moving to Sunderland for an initial £8m in August 2015 after a successful loan spell on Wearside.

1907 – Forward Ted Hancock was born in Rotherham. He signed from Gainsborough Trinity in January 1931, scoring twice in ten reds games before joining Burnley in February 1933.
1925 - South African winger Bob Priday was born in Cape Town. His chances were limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949.

Semi-finals
1978 - We lost 2-1 at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the European Cup, with Wilfried Hannes putting the home side ahead. David Johnson netted a late equaliser before Rainer Bonhof’s free-kick put the home side ahead after a rare Ray Clemence error a minute later. Ian Callaghan made his 857th and final reds appearance. Fortunately, we won through to the Final in the Anfield second leg.
1947 - We shared a goalless two hours with Burnley in the FA Cup at Ewood Park, but lost the replay at Maine Road two weeks later.

Another for Gordon
1932 - Gordon Hodgson’s first of two strikes in our 4-3 top-flight defeat at Huddersfield Town was his 150th reds goal. Dave Wright also scored, with Dave Mangnall bagging the first three of his seven goals past us and Wilf Bott grabbing one of his five against the reds.

Keepers debuting in friendlies
1997 - David James made his England bow in a 2-0 defeat of Mexico at Wembley, his only appearance while a red. Robbie Fowler struck his first senior goal for his country, with Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp also playing and future red Paul Ince captaining the side. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, ex-reds Jim Magilton and Dean Saunders, and future reds Gary McAllister and Øyvind Leonhardsen all also turned out for their countries that day.
2000 - Sander Westerveld won his second cap, and first as a red, as the Netherlands drew 2-2 in Belgium. Ex-red Gareth Roberts made his senior debut for Wales in the opening match at the Millennium Stadium as they lost 2-1 to Finland, with future red Jari Litmanen netting the first goal at the new ground. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann, Emile Heskey, Sami Hyypiä, ex-reds Don Hutchison and Dean Saunders, and future reds Milan Baroš, Abel Xavier and Christian Ziege all also won international caps that day.
2022 - Vítezslav Jaroš debuted for the Czech Republic Under-21’a as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Andorra.

Beating the Tractor boys
We have twice beaten Ipswich Town at Anfield on this day in history.
1958 - We won 3-1 in a Second Division match, with Jimmy Harrower netting his first reds goal and Jimmy Melia and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet.
1971 - Alun Evans and Bobby Graham were on target as we won 2-1 in a top-flight meeting.

Derby disappointment
1918 - Harry Lewis and Thomas Green struck as we lost 3-2 at Everton in a Wartime League fixture.
1907 - Our other derby on this day in history was a top-flight match at Goodison that ended goalless.

Double farewell
1913 - Harry Welfare played his fourth and final reds game in our 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield, with fellow forward James Speakman appearing for the eighth and last time as ex-reds forward William Hunter making the first of his three appearances for the visitors. George Wall struck one of his ten goals against the reds, with Enoch West bagging one of his eight past us.

First and last caps
1890 – Future red Tom Wyllie won his only cap for Scotland in their 4-1 thumping of Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast.
1897 - Frank Becton won his second and final England cap, and only one as a reds player. The home side thumped Wales 4-0 in a British International Championships encounter at Bramall Lane.

Tons up
1952 – Bill Jones played his 200th League game for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Billy Liddell opened the scoring, but future red Johnny Wheeler equalised after the break.
1969 – We won 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers with Tommy Smith converting a penalty and Roger Hunt also on the scoresheet as Ian St. John played his 300th League game for the reds.
1975 – Tommy Smith made his 400th League appearance for us as Kevin Keegan nabbed the only goal of Birmingham City’s visit to Anfield from the penalty spot, with Ian Callaghan playing for the 162nd consecutive time in the League.

International reds at the double
1995 - Future red Patrik Berger bagged a brace as the Czech Republic beat Belarus 4-2 in a European Championships qualifier. This was the second of three consecutive internationals in which he scored. On the same day, ex-red Dean Saunders netted as Wales lost 3-1 in a qualifier in Bulgaria. Phil Babb, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, future reds Markus Babbel, Gary McAllister, Jason McAteer and Øyvind Leonhardsen and ex-reds Jim Magilton, Ronnie Rosenthal and Steve Staunton all also represented their countries.

Meanwhile, future red Jari Litmanen struck as Finland won 2-0 in a Euro ‘96 qualifier in San Marino, with future red Sami Hyypiä also playing.
2003 - Sami also played for Finland, skippering them in their 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying defeat in Italy. Future red Andriy Voronin was on target in a 2-2 qualifying draw with Spain in Kyiv.

2021 – Mohamed Salah struck twice as Egypt thumped Comoros 4-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cairo, with Liam Millar featuring for Canada as they trounced the Cayman Islands 11-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Florida. Meanwhile, James Balagizi and Jarell Quansah both played as England Under-18’s beat Wales 2-0 in a friendly in Cardiff.

Thumping the Shakers
1941 - We trounced Bury 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Gigg Lane. Dicky Dorsett grabbed a brace, with Stanley Pickstock, Cyril Done and Billy Liddell also netting.

Dismissed
1939 – George Paterson was sent off as Preston North End won a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie 1-0 at Anfield.

Mixed fortunes against Spurs and City
We have twice faced both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur on this day in history in top-flight matches, winning one and losing one against each side.
1924 - Harry Chambers grabbed the only goal of the game in the second minute against Spurs at Anfield.
1980 - We lost 2-0 at White Hart Lane, with John Pratt netting and Glenn Hoddle converting a penalty, the first of his four goals against the reds.

1937 - We were thumped 5-1 at Maine Road with Fred Howe nabbing our consolation. Eric Brook scored the last of his nine goals against us, having bagged a treble in the reverse fixture just three days earlier. Alex Herd bagged two of his eight goals past us, with Fred Tilson netting the last of his six goals against us and Richard Neilson also on target.
1950 - Billy Liddell and Jimmy Payne struck at the same venue as we won 2-1.

International reds no more
1995 - Rob Jones and future red Barry Venison won their final caps for England as Uruguay held them to a goalless draw at Wembley. Future red Nick Barmby made his senior debut in this game as a substitute, while John Barnes, ex-red Peter Beardsley and Steve McManaman all also featured.
2022 - Philippe Coutinho won his last cap as a Barcelona player as Brazil won a World Cup qualifier 4-0 in Bolivia, with Arthur Melo appearing for the final time before joining the reds on loan as Alisson Becker and Fabinho also played. Luis Suárez scored while winning his last cap as a Club Atlético de Madrid player in Uruguay’s 2-0 win in Chile, with ex-red Sebastián Coates also featuring. Calvin Ramsay appeared for Scotland Under-21’s for the last time while with Aberdeen in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw in Kazakhstan, with Tom Clayton netting his first goal at this level. Ryan Gravenberch won his sixth and last cap for the Dutch Under-21’s while with Ajax as they beat Switzerland 2-0 in a qualifier in Deventer. Leighton Clarkson appeared for England Under-20’s for the fifth and final time as they beat Germany 3-1 in the Elite League in Colchester, with Tyler Morton also featuring. Jan no longer the man
2002 - Jan Mølby resigned as Kidderminster Harriers’ boss, fuelling speculation that he was about to take over at Hull City, which he did five days later.

Dudek & Henchoz twice
Stéphane Henchoz has twice represented his country on this day in history.
1995 - He was a substitute in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw in Hungary, with Roy Hodgson in charge of the Swiss and ex-red István Kozma featuring for the home side.
2000 - They drew a friendly with Norway by the same score in Lugano.

Jerzy Dudek twice won international caps in goalless draws against Hungary.
2000 - He won his fourth cap, while still a Feyenoord player, in a friendly in Debrecen.
2003 - He won his 27th cap in a European Championships qualifier in Chorzów.

A rare strike for Eph
1919 - Ephraim Longworth scored one of his two only recorded goals as we beat Stockport County 3-0 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Harry Lewis added a brace.

Other reds games
1989 – John Barnes grabbed the only goal of Derby County’s visit to L4 after just two minutes.
1930 – Jimmy Smith was on target late on as we drew 1-1 at Leeds United after Russell Wainscott struck one of his five goals past us after just a minute.

1929 – Gordon Hodgson netted twice as we beat Cardiff City 2-0 at Anfield.
1915 – Newcastle United held us to a 2-2 draw at home. We fell two goals behind before Tom Hill and Fred Pagnam levelled the scores late on.
1902 – George Fleming struck late on, the only goal of our trip to Aston Villa.

2010 – The appointment of Dr. Peter Brukner as Head of Sports Medicine & Sports Science was announced.

On the move
1986 - John Durnin signed on a free from Waterloo Docks. On the same day we were held to a goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday, the only points we dropped in the final twelve games of that season.
1985 - Dean Saunders joined Cardiff City on loan from Swansea City, failing to net in four games for the Bluebirds.
1960 – Left-half Geoff Twentyman left for Ballymena United. He had netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004.

2002 - Second string striker John Miles moved to Stoke City on loan until the end of the season in a move that became permanent a month later.
1996 – Future Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe joined Blackpool from Swansea City on a free transfer. However, he only made one senior appearance before retiring from playing in May 1998.

1994 – Titi Camara netted for Guinea in their 2-1 defeat to Senegal in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Tunisia.
2003 - Future red Craig Bellamy struck as Wales beat Azerbaijan 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, with fellow future red Paul Jones also playing. Also in international action that day were Milan Baroš, Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann, Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy, Michael Owen and Vladimír Šmicer, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Christian Poulsen and Bolo Zenden and ex-reds Don Hutchison and David James.
2015 - Future red Roberto Firmino scored the only goal as Brazil beat Chile in a friendly at the Emirates Stadium, with Philippe Coutinho also featuring. Meanwhile, Lazar Marković, future red Andy Robertson and ex-red Robbie Keane all played in European Championships qualifiers.

2011 – Andy Carroll netted his first goal for his country while winning his first cap as a reds player in England’s 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana at Wembley. Dirk Kuyt bagged a brace, scoring in his third consecutive international as the Netherlands beat Hungary 5-3 in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Amsterdam. Ex-red Milan Baroš was on target as the Czech Republic beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in another qualifier, while Harry Kewell won his last cap as a Galatasaray player in Australia’s 2-1 friendly win in Germany. Nuri Şahin won his last cap in his first spell as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player as Turkey beat Austria 2-0 in a qualifier in Istanbul. Future red Samed Yeşil scored for Germany Under-17’s as they beat Switzerland 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Dusseldorf, with future red Fabio Borini netting his fist Italy Under-21’s goal in their 2-2 friendly draw in Germany. 2016 – Sakho won his last cap as a reds plater as France beat Russia 4-2 in a friendly in Paris. 2022 - Sadio Mané scored the winning penalty with Mohamed Salah missing his as Senegal beat Egypt 3-1 in a shoot-out after their World Cup qualifier had ended 1-1 on aggregate in Dakar. Future red Ben Doak bagged a treble as Scotland Under-17’s thrashed Georgia 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Falkirk. Curtis Jones was on target as England Under-21’s won a qualifier 3-0 in Albania, while future red Fábio Carvalho nabbed his first goal for Portugal Under-21’s in their 4-0 win in Greece. Ex-reds Christian Benteke and Raheem Sterling scored in friendlies, with Belgium beating Burkina Faso 3-0 in Brussels and England defeating Ivory Coast by the same score at Wembley, with Divock Origi also featuring.

International youngsters
1983 - Southampton’s Mark Wright made his England Under-21’s debut as they beat Greece 2-1 at Fratton Park in a European Championships qualifier. Steve McMahon won his final cap as a Blue in the same game, with fellow future red Paul Walsh also featuring.
2005 - John Welsh struck his first goal for England Under-21’s as he started his first game at this level, although this was his fourth cap. Scott Carson and future red James Milner also played as Azerbaijan were beaten 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium in a European Championships qualifier. Future red Daniel Agger netted his third and final goal for Denmark at this level as they won 1-0 in the Ukraine in another qualifier. On the same day, Ramon Calliste won his final Under-21’s cap as a Manchester United player, with Wales losing a qualifier 2-0 in Austria with future red Robbie Keane also in international action.

Also in international action
2009 – Nineteen people were killed in a stampede before Ivory Coast thrashed Malawi 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Abidjan, with future red Kolo Touré in action. Ex-red Mark González also featured in a qualifier that day.
2017 – Ex-red Luis Suárez played as Uruguay lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Peru.
2018 – Future red Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Cameroon in France.
