By fans, for fans. By fans, for fans. By fans, for fans.

Seventh heaven
2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles!

New boss
1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land.

European victories
1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace, as Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also got on the scoresheet, with Kenny Dalglish running the show. Nené scored the first of his three goals for the Portuguese outfit against us.
1973 - Kevin Keegan netted the only goal of the game at Dynamo Dresden in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg, en route to claiming the trophy for the first of three times so far. Keegan had two first-half strikes chalked off before finally notching. Bill Shankly described this as “one of our finest performances in Europe.”

Derby delight and despair
We have twice entertained our neighbours from across the park on this day over the years.
1970 - We lost 2-0 as the Blues went on to claim the title for the seventh time, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the entire 1970’s. Joe Royle struck the first of his five goals against the reds, with Alan Whittle also netting as Geoff Strong appeared for the 201st and last time before joining Coventry City the following August.
1981 - A John Bailey own goal handed us a 1-0 victory in what was Bob Paisley’s 400th game in charge of the reds. Billy Wright skippered the Blues, the only player ever to lead them out for the first time in a derby.

SteG honoured
2007 - Steven Gerrard was presented with his MBE by The Queen.

Comeback defeat
2012 - We led 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers with a quarter of an hour to go through a stunning Sebastián Coates strike, his first for the club, and Dirk Kuyt’s final reds goal, in his 200th game for the club, but eventually lost 3-2. Shaun Derry and ex-red Djibril Cissé both headed in before Jamie Mackie scored a last-gasp winner.

Beaten down the East Lancs
2010 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United as Fernando Torres headed us in front before Wayne Rooney converted the rebound of a penalty saved by Pepe Reina, one of his seven goals past us. Ji-Sung Park struck the winner after an hour with Torres and Yossi Benayoun both wasting good chances to draw us level.

Signing on
1995 - Mark Kennedy signed from Millwall for £1.5m. He only ever made 21 senior reds appearances, without getting on the scoresheet. He was sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m after three years at Anfield.
1940 – Wing-half Stan Palk signed as a professional. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940 and joined Port Vale, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000 in July 1948, the record fee we had received to date. He was their skipper for four years, playing over 150 League games.

Tottenham twice
We twice faced Tottenham Hotspur in the League on this day in the 1990’s.
1992 - We won 2-1 at Anfield thanks to a brace from Dean Saunders, with future red Paul Stewart notching the second of his three goals past us.
1990 – We went down 1-0 at White Hart Lane, with Paul Stewart again the scorer.

Benefit game
1914 – We played a benefit game for two reds heroes, winger Arthur Goddard and striker Jack Parkinson. The League match at Anfield ended in a 3-1 win over Preston North End, raising the then-princely sum of £250. Tom Miller bagged a brace, with Jimmy Nicholl also on target.
1908 - We also faced PNE, losing 3-0 at Deepdale in another top-flight encounter. Full-back Harry Griffiths played his sixth and final reds game that day. Dickie Bond bagged one of his four goals against the reds from the spot, with Charles Dawson and James Wilson also netting.

A swift thumping
1896 - We trounced Burton Swifts 6-1 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. George Allan and Harry Bradshaw both struck braces, while Jimmy Ross and Joe McQue were also on the scoresheet. Half-back Barney Battles made the first of his six reds appearances in this game, with half-back Tom Cleghorn also debuting.

Fred’s first
1925 - Fred Baron grabbed his first two reds goals as we beat Burnley 3-0 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Danny Shone was also on target.

Tamed by Wolves
We have twice been beaten by Wolverhampton Wanderers on this day in history.
1936 - We lost 2-0 at Anfield.
1953 – We were beaten 3-0 at Molineux, our worst ever League defeat there as they went on to claim the title. Roy Swinbourne struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Billy Wright and Jim Hanc***s also on target.

Miki on the move
2007 - Reserves centre-half Miki Roqué joined Oldham Athletic on loan. He turned out on four occasions for the Latics, before returning to his native Spain having been released by the reds in June 2009. However, he died from pelvic cancer three years later.

Births and deaths
1997 – Centre-half Nat Phillips was born in Bolton. He joined from his hometown club in the summer of 2016 and has struck once in 29 solid senior appearances by the time of his 27th birthday.
1929 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields was born in Denny, Stirlings. He signed from Cowdenbeath in May 1949, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951.
1918 – Winger Harman van den Berg was born in Cape Town. He signed from South African side Peninsular in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened.
1886 - John Bovill was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. He signed from Chesterfield Town in April 1911 and went on to bag seven goals in 29 reds games before leaving for Linfield in 1914.

1924 – Scottish forward ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr died. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. He returned to Scotland in January 1912, signing for Raith Rovers.
2009 – Club Secretary Bryce Morrison died. He had worked for the reds for seventeen years.

Shown the door
1983 - Emlyn Hughes was sacked as Manager of Rotherham United as they headed towards the old Third Division. He had been in charge since July 1981.
2010 - Steve Staunton was dismissed as Darlington boss, having led them to just four victories in 25 games in charge, although they still went on to finish rock bottom of League Two.

1984 - John Aldridge joined Oxford United from Newport County for £78,000. He went on to strike ninety times in 141 games for the U’s, before making his big move to Anfield for £750,000 in January 1987.

2023 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was re-appointed Manager of Crystal Palace, remaining in charge until February 2024.
