Happy birthday Quasi
1961 - Peter Beardsley was born in Newcastle. He arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee in July 1987, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 59 times in 175 games. He was controversially sold by Graeme Souness to Everton for £1m in August 1991.

2002 – Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever was born in Amsterdam. He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2018, signing his first professional contract in July 2019. He scored once in four senior appearances before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers for an initial £9m in September 2020.
1882 – Forward Sam Gilligan was born in Dundee. He signed from Bristol City in May 1910, having featured in the FA Cup Final for them the previous year. He netted sixteen goals in forty games, including the crucial strike at Oldham Athletic in April 1912 that kept us in the top flight, before joining Gillingham as Player/Manager in July 1913.

1993 – Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira was born in Braga. He signed from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000 in January 2012, making his senior bow as a substitute in our win at Fulham in February 2014. He struck once in eight first-team games in total before moving on to Porto for a £250,000 compensation fee in July 2016.
1996 – Academy left-back Joe Maguire was born in Manchester. He made his first senior appearance in our game against a True Thai Premier League All Stars side in July 2015, making his full debut in our FA Cup tie at Exeter City in January 2016. He moved on to Fleetwood Town in January 2017.

Humbled at Turf Moor
2005 - Antonio Núñez was sent off as Djimi Traore scored a comical own goal to hand Burnley victory in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie. This turned out to be Neil Mellor’s 22nd and final game for the club.

Crazy Horse’s century
1969 - Emlyn Hughes reached a century of reds appearances as we won 2-1 at Chelsea. Roger Hunt struck what was erroneously believed at the time to be a club record 234th League goal for the reds, although it was in fact only his 233rd! Alun Evans headed in, with Bobby Tambling scoring the last of his eight goals against the reds.

A win at last
2003 - We finally won a League game, after a run of eleven matches without tasting victory, with a superb performance at a rain-sodden Southampton. Emile Heskey’s first-half header was the highlight of a barnstorming performance.

Most recently
2014 - We came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at Anfield. Andreas Weimann scored before future red Christian Benteke grabbed one of his seven goals against us to date, with Daniel Sturridge pulling a goal back in first-half stoppage time. Steven Gerrard levelled from the spot.

Through on penalties
1995 - We finally saw off Birmingham City in the replay of our FA Cup Third Round tie. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes with Jamie Redknapp grabbing our goal, remaining that way through extra time as Ian Rush had a goal disallowed. We won the penalty shoot-out 2-0 with Stig Inge Bjørnebye netting the decisive spot-kick, and Jamie Redknapp also converting, as City missed all four of their kicks, while Neil Ruddock’s effort was saved. However, we were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur in the Sixth Round that season.

Red debutants
1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme made his reds bow in a 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield, as Jamie Carragher headed the opener with his first ever senior goal on his first start. Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler were also on the scoresheet.
1936 – Outside-right Billy Hartill debuted in our goalless top-flight fixture at Grimsby Town, with pat Glover missing a penalty for the home side.

The sheriff departs
2005 - Salif Diao joined Birmingham City on loan. He only made two senior appearances in his time at St. Andrews, both defeats.

First and last goals
2017 – Lucas Leiva headed his seventh and last reds goal as we won our FA Cup Third Round replay 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle. Winger Harry Wilson made his reds bow, while midfielder Kevin Stewart played his twentieth and last reds game, with Sheyi Ojo featuring for the thirteenth and final time. Divock Origi had a late penalty saved, but we hung on to win, falling to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield at the next hurdle.
1992 - Michael Thomas scored his first reds goal in a 3-2 win at Oldham Athletic. The former Arsenal midfielder grabbed the winning goal, after strikes from Steve McManaman and Dean Saunders.
1941 – We won a Wartime League game 3-0 at Boundary Park, thanks to goals from Bob Paisley, George Collister and John Search.

An east end double
1964 - West Ham United completed the only League double over the reds that season, winning 1-0 at Upton Park thanks to a John Byrne strike.
1930 - We also lost 4-1 there with Jim Smith nabbing our consolation as centre-half David Davidson put through his own net while playing his 62nd and final reds game. Vic Watson struck one of his nine goals against the reds as Jim Barrett and George Robson also netted for the Irons.

1983 – We beat the Hammers 2-1 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield, thanks to goals from David Hodgson and Graeme Souness. This was Bob Paisley’s fiftieth game in charge in this competition.
1986 – We won a League meeting 3-1 in L4, when Ian Rush reached a century of League goals for the reds. Paul Walsh also scored, with Jan Mølby converting a penalty.

Four against
1913 - Fred Howard scored all four Manchester City goals on his debut as they beat us 4-1 at their old Hyde Road ground, the first of his nine goals past us. Inside-right Jimmy Stewart nabbed the 26th and last of his reds goals, with half-back Ralph Holden playing the first of just two senior games.

For Arthur
1908 - Centre-half Jimmy Harrop made his reds bow as we beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in a First Division match at Anfield. Jack Parkinson struck in a match that was also a benefit game for winger Arthur Goddard. Forward Joe Hewitt reached a century of League appearances for the club in this game.
1947 - We lost 3-0 to Wanderers at Anfield with Nat Lofthouse scoring one of his eight goals against the reds, Willie Moir bagging the first of his five and Malcolm Barrass also on target.

New deals
2012 – The club announced a deal with Warrior Sports Inc. to become its Official Kit Supplier, apparently worth £25m per season, with the deal lasting three years.
2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet signed a new contract. He made 204 first-team appearances after signing from Sunderland for £9m in June 2013, moving on to Club Brugge for an initial reported £6.4m in August 2019.

Youngsters on the move
2007 - Irish international midfielder Darren Potter was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers after a successful 24-game loan spell. On the same day, winger Adam Hammill joined Dunfermline Athletic on loan, helping them to the Scottish Cup Final at the end of the season. Meanwhile, ex-reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan signed for Boston United on a free transfer from Chester City.
2008 - Second string forward Craig Lindfield moved to Chester City on loan, where he failed to score in seven outings. Meanwhile, Djimi Traoré joined Stade Rennais from Portsmouth on a temporary basis, playing fifteen League games for them.
2013 – Scottish centre-half Danny Wilson joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, playing fifteen times before signing on permanently in the summer.

In and out
1895 - Left-back Tom Wilkie signed from Heart Of Midlothian. He struck once in 64 games for the reds before joining Portsmouth in 1899.
1996 – Mark Walters joined Southampton on a free transfer. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United earlier the following year, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991.

First and last caps
1913 - Ex-red George Latham won his tenth and final cap for Wales, his only one as a Cardiff City player. His former Anfield team-mate Ernest Peake also played for the Welsh as they beat Ireland 1-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Reds half-back Billy Lacey was winning his first cap as a reds player for the Irish and eleventh to date.
1995 – Future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri won the last of his five senior caps for France as they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Utrecht.
2020 – Future red Alexis Mac Allister scored and was then sent off for a second bookable offence while making his debut for Argentina Under-23’s as they won an Olympics qualifier 2-1 in Colombia.

Also on the move
2001 - Former reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Conference side Doncaster Rovers from Wrexham on loan. He played six times in his one month at Belle Vue.
2008 – Ex-reds midfielder Bernard Diomède announced his retirement from playing having been without a club for eighteen months. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000.
2016 – The loaning of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza to Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging was announced. He played nine times for the Dutch side.
2017 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori was sold to Reading for a reported £3.75m after just three senior reds games since signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m in September 2013.

For Africa
1996 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon in their 2-1 defeat of Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Johannesburg.
2010 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured for Mali in their 3-1 defeat of Malawi in Angola.
2017 – Ex-red Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau as they lost 2-1 to Cameroon in Gabon.

Other reds games
1975 – We beat Coventry City 2-1 at Anfield with Steve Heighway giving us a half-time lead. Kevin Keegan struck late on, but there was still enough time for Brian Alderson to bag a consolation.
1967 – We lost 2-1 at Leicester City with Mike Stringfellow opening the scoring with one of his five goals past us, before we levelled through a Peter Rodrigues own goal. Graham Cross struck the winner.
1958 – Middlesbrough won 2-0 in L4 with Brian Clough scoring one of his ten goals against the reds, and Ron Burbeck also on target.

Also in international action
1950 – Emlyn Hughes played for England B in their 5-0 thumping of Switzerland at Hillsborough.
2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-15’s beat Hungary 2-1.
2004 – Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played in Senegal’s 2-1 friendly defeat of South Africa in Dakar.
2010 – Ex-red Jari Litmanen captained Finland as they lost 2-0 to South Korea in Spain.

2011 – Ex-red Harry Kewell played for Australia in their 1-0 win over Bahrain in an AFC Asian Cup Finals group game in Qatar.
2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak scored as Turkey Under-16’s beat Ukraine 2-0 in a friendly.
2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez played for Uruguay Under-20’s in their 1-0 group stage defeat of Peru in the World Championship Finals in Chile.
