A win in the fizzy cup
1995 - Steve McManaman was the star of the show as we won our sixth League Cup, when it was known as the Coca Cola Cup, by defeating First Division Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Wembley. Macca got both our goals, with Alan Thompson grabbing a late consolation for the Trotters. Future red Jason McAteer was on the losing side that day, while John Barnes was playing his 300th reds game.

2005 - We defeated Bolton again, with Igor Bišcan heading the only goal of the game at Anfield late on from a Djimi Traoré cross, his third and final reds goal.
1926 - We also beat Wanderers, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our First Division meeting late on at Burnden Park.

Match-fixing shame
1915 - We visited Old Trafford on this Good Friday for a First Division match with Manchester United, who were struggling against relegation, while we were comfortable in mid-table. The game ended in a 2-0 United win with George Anderson bagging a brace, the last of his four goals against us. Reds left-winger Jackie Sheldon and United’s Pat O’Connell both missed penalties, with full-back Bob Purcell handballing to give away United’s missed penalty. Seven players were later suspended for fixing this match, including four reds. Sheldon was a former United player, while centre-forward Tom Miller later moved to Old Trafford. Half-back Tommy Fairfoul and Purcell were also involved.
1894 – We also faced United, who were still known as Newton Heath at the time, losing 2-0 at Bank Street in a testimonial match for their player Billy Stewart.

In front of the Kop for the last time
1994 - Ian Rush scored our consolation in a 2-1 League defeat by Sheffield United, with Jostein Flo bagging both Blades goals. This was the last reds strike from open play in front of the standing Kop.
1923 - We were also beaten by the Blades when Dick Forshaw netted as we were thumped 4-1 at Bramall Lane in another top-flight encounter on Easter Monday. The Liverpool Echo reported that we “appeared to deserve defeat” with the backs having “much to do with the disaster”. However, we went on to claim the title for the fourth time that season. Billy Gillespie bagged two of his seven strikes against the reds, with Bert Menlove and Tommy Sampy also netting.

Hitting the top
1982 - We climbed to the top of the table for the first time that season, when Kenny Dalglish grabbed the only goal of our Good Friday win over Notts County at Anfield, with Terry McDermott having a penalty saved. We had been languishing in twelfth just fourteen games earlier, but went on to claim our thirteenth League title.

Disappointment against the Baggies
1971 – West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Anfield, with Alun Evans bagging our goal late on. Tony Brown bagged one of his eight goals against the reds.
2011 – We lost 2-1 at The Hawthorns, our first defeat there for thirty years. Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger both had to go off injured inside the first half hour before Martin Škrtel headed us in front after the break. However, Chris Brunt converted two spot-kicks for the home side.

Facing the Gunners
2008 – Dirk Kuyt grabbed our equaliser just three minutes after Emmanuel Adebayor had struck as we held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium, the first of his five goals past us to date. The home side were denied a good penalty claim when Kuyt appeared to tug Alexander Hleb back during the second half but the reds hung on to ensure they held a small advantage for the Anfield return.

1930 - Archie McPherson grabbed the only goal of the game as we won at Highbury, one of two League meetings with Arsenal we have had on this day in history.
1924 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Most recently
2016 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur as Harry Kane equalised following Philippe Coutinho’s goal, one of his nine goals past us to date.
2022 – Diogo Jota netted as we beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield, with Fabinho converting a late penalty. This was our tenth straight League victory as we went top of the table for a few hours.

A rare defeat
1988 – We suffered a 2-1 Easter Saturday reverse at Nottingham Forest, one of only two League defeats in that glorious season. John Aldridge nabbed our consolation from the spot, with Forest scoring through an Alan Hansen own goal and one of Neil Webb’s five goals past the reds, with future red Nigel Clough having a penalty saved by Bruce Grobbelaar. Jan Mølby reached a century of League games for the reds.

Unhappy milestones
1956 – Forward John Evans bagged his fiftieth reds goal as we lost 2-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers in the Second Division as Bert Tindill grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Roy Brown also on target.
1910 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 300th reds game in our 2-0 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. David McLean netted the first of his eight goals against us, with Herbert Danson scoring the last of his four.

A Goldie beginning and end
1898 - Left-half Bill Goldie made his debut as we lost 3-2 at Notts County, with Andrew McCowie and Frank Becton on target for the reds. Inside-left Hugh Morgan also made his reds bow in this game, with forward Harry Bradshaw playing his 138th and final reds game. Tom Boucher bagged a brace for the home side, with John Leonard also netting.
1953 – His brother Archie died in Bordesley Green. The full-back struck once in 149 games for the reds and won a Second Division championship medal, with Bill netting six goals in 174 appearances and helping us to our first League title in 1901.

Harold’s last
1921 – Harry Chambers scored as outside-right Harold Wadsworth bagged his third and last reds goal in our 2-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers at Anfield.

South and Tom for the only time
1955 - Centre-half Alex South scored his only reds goal in a 4-4 Second Division draw with Luton Town at Anfield. Johnny Evans nabbed a brace and Eric Anderson grabbed our other goal. Gordon Turner struck the first two of his five goals against the reds, with Bob Morton grabbing the final two of his four past us, while right-winger Jimmy Payne was making his 200th League appearance for the reds.
1927 - Future reds right-half Tom Morrison won his only cap for Scotland in a 2-1 defeat by England in the British International Championships at Hampden Park.

Goalless beginnings and ends
1947 - Left-winger Tommy McLeod made his reds bow as we held Preston North End to a goalless draw at Deepdale, our tenth game in a row without defeat.
1906 – Forward James Garside played the last of his five senior reds games as our top-flight trip to Bury ended without score.

Edgar again
1892 – Future red Edgar Chadwick bagged his third and final goal for England, scoring in his third consecutive international as they thumped Scotland 4-1 in the British International Championships at Ibrox.

Final caps
1910 - Forward Jack Parkinson made his second and final England appearance as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Clubmate Sam Hardy was in the England goal.
2003 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his ninth and final cap as a Panathinaikos player as Greece won a Euro 2004 qualifier 2-0 in Northern Ireland. Also in international action that day were Milan Baroš, Jerzy Dudek, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, John Arne Riise, Vladimír Šmicer, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Djibril Cissé, Robbie Keane, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, and ex-reds Don Hutchison and David James.

2015 - Future red Ozan Kabak won his seventh and last Under-15’s cap, scoring his only goal at this level as Belgium beat Turkey 2-1 in Tubeke. Meanwhile, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s in their 1-0 defeat of Turkey in the Montaigu Tournament in France.
2016 – Future reds keeper Kamil Grabara won his ninth and last cap for Poland Under-17’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland on penalties after a goalless draw in their European Championships qualifier in Warsaw.
2018 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho won his tenth and final cap for England Under-16’s in their 1-0 friendly win in France.

Sir Roger at the double
1966 - Roger Hunt bagged a brace as England beat Scotland 4-3 at Hampden Park in their British International Championships encounter.

Jari on target
1997 - Jari Litmanen netted as Finland won 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan. Fellow future red Sami Hyypiä also played. On the same day, Patrik Berger and future reds Gary McAllister, Vladimír Šmicer and Christian Ziege all also played for their countries. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer was sent off as the Republic of Ireland lost 3-2 to FYR Macedonia in Skopje, with ex-red Steve Staunton also featuring.

Derby despair
1945 - We were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Everton with Les Shannon nabbing our goal in a match that counted for both the Wartime League and as the Liverpool Senior Cup Final.

Mixed fortunes against the Wearsiders
We have twice entertained Sunderland in the top-flight on this day in history.
1927 - Harry Chambers struck in the second minute as we lost 2-1, with Dave Halliday netting two of his thirteen goals against the reds.
1983 - Graeme Souness bagged the only goal of the game.

Other reds games
1977 – We beat Leeds United 3-1 at Anfield with Phil Neal scoring from the spot, before David Fairclough and Steve Heighway both headed in.
1960 – Ronnie Moran scored from the spot as Lincoln City won a Second Division fixture in L4 3-1 as Bert Linnecor bagged treble, the last of his five goals against the reds, including a penalty.
1949 – We lost 3-2 at League leaders Portsmouth. Ike Clarke netted one of his four goals past us before Peter Harris bagged one of his eight. Len Phillips struck after the break, with Albert Stubbins and Bob Paisley both on the scoresheet for the reds.

1938 – We won 2-1 at Huddersfield Town thanks to goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer.
1932 – Gordon Gunson struck the only goal of our visit to Manchester City.
1920 – We drew 1-1 at Oldham Athletic. George Wall converted a penalty, the last of his ten goals past us, before Tom Miller equalised.
1904 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough.

On the move
2012 – Ex-reserves midfielder Jim Magilton left as Manager of Melbourne Victory after his contract was not renewed. He had won just two of his twelve games in charge.
2013 - David James signed as Player/Coach for Icelandic side Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja, moving on at the end of that season.
2023 - Brendan Rodgers was sacked as Manager of Leicester City. He had led them to 92 wins in 204 games since taking charge in February 2019 as they won the FA Cup and FA Community Shield.

For Harry
1900 - A benefit game was played for ex-reds forward Harry Bradshaw, between his last two clubs. Tottenham Hotspur won 3-0 at Thames Ironworks, who later became West Ham United.

Also in international action
1988 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat the USSR 2-0 in the Final of the Four Nations Tournament in Berlin.
2023 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s as they beat New Caledonia 2-0 in a friendly in France.
