Clinching the title
1990 - We secured our eighteenth League title, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush strike and a John Barnes penalty, after Roy Wegerle had put the visitors in front. Recent reserves keeper Paul Harrison was our mascot that day!

UEFA Cup glory
1976 - Jimmy Case became our first substitute to score in a cup final as we beat Club Brugge 3-2 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, despite being 2-0 down inside the first quarter of an hour thanks to strikes from Raoul Lambert and Julien Cools. Ray Kennedy also scored, with Kevin Keegan netting a penalty, and we drew the return match 1-1 to clinch our second UEFA Cup.

Virgil the best
2019 – Centre-half Virgil van Dijk was named as PFA Player of the Year after an impressive campaign that eventually resulted in winning the UEFA Champions League in Madrid.

Rushie arrives
1980 - Ian Rush arrived from Chester for a fee of £300,000, which remains their record sale. His club record 346 strikes in 660 games across two spells with the reds helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup. He moved on to Leeds United in May 1996.
1970 – Forward Jack Whitham signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £57,000, bagging seven goals in eighteen outings before having his contract terminated by mutual consent in 1974. He then played for Cardiff City and Reading.

Luis at the treble
2012 - Luis Suárez scored a stunning hat-trick as we won 3-0 at Norwich City, the first of his six trebles for the club. He struck twice before the break, rounding the scoring out with a sublime lob over the keeper from just inside the opposition half.

2013 - Suárez was named in the PFA Team of the Year, having scored thirty times in 44 outings that campaign.
2014 - Steven Gerrard was named as the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year.

Semi-final disappointments
1971 - A goalless draw at Leeds United was not enough to take us through to the Fairs Cup Final, after having lost the first leg 1-0 at Anfield. Ron Years played his 454th and last game for the club.
1980 - Our third FA Cup Semi-final match of the season with Arsenal still could not separate the sides, as the game at Villa Park ended 1-1 after extra time, with Kenny Dalglish bagging our goal in the final minute of normal time after Alan Sunderland had opened the scoring with one of his six goals past us after just sixteen seconds. Ray Clemence made his 600th reds outing in this game, while David Johnson had to leave the pitch for a while having been knocked unconscious. Unfortunately, we lost the fourth game three days later.
2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah played as Egypt Under-20’s lost a penalty shoot-out to Cameroon after a goalless draw in their African Championship Finals Semi-final in South Africa.

Beginnings and ends
2007 - Left-back Emiliano Insúa made his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth, with Robbie Fowler having a goal ruled out for offside. Sami Hyypiä scored in his 400th reds game, our 7,000th in League football, while Jerzy Dudek made his 186th and final appearance for the club. Benjani netted the first of his four goals against the reds with Niko Kranjcar also scoring for Pompey.
1900 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his 149th and final reds game in our 2-1 top-flight win at Glossop as we ended the season in tenth. His brother Bill struck, as did John Walker before the home side grabbed a last-minute consolation through G. Colville.

Losing the title
1969 - Leeds United’s goalless draw at Anfield handed them the League title, with the reds ending the season six points behind in second place.

In and out of the top flight
1894 - We won promotion to the First Division for the first time, beating Newton Heath, who later became Manchester United, 2-0 in a Test Match decider, in front of only 5,000 at Ewood Park. Patrick Gordon and Harry Bradshaw scored the decisive goals, with centre-forward David Henderson playing his 23rd and last reds game.
1928 – Our 2-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield relegated the North London side, when Tom Bromilow and Gordon Hodgson netted. Bill Murray played the first of his four reds games.

Winning the Shield
1906 - We claimed the Charity Shield for the first time, when it was then a six-foot high trophy known as the Sheriff of London Charity Shield. Arthur Goddard and Joe Hewitt grabbed a brace apiece as we beat amateur side Corinthians 5-1 at Craven Cottage, with our other score being a Kenneth Hunt own goal.

Most recently
2018 – Soon-to-be relegated Stoke City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, with the reds denied a strong late penalty claim for handball.
1923 - We were held to a goalless draw at Stoke’s Victoria Ground in a top-flight encounter, having already won the title ten days earlier.

Double England debutants
1999 - Jamie Carragher made his senior England debut, as a substitute in their 1-1 friendly draw with Hungary in Budapest. Future red Emile Heskey also made his England bow, from the start. Steve McManaman won his 24th cap, his final one as a reds player, while Jamie Redknapp also played for a side managed by ex-red Kevin Keegan. On the same day, future red John Arne Riise scored his first goal for Norway Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Georgia, with Frode Kippe also in action.
1993 - Future reds boss Gérard Houllier managed France as they beat Sweden 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Parc des Princes. On the same day, his future assistant Christian Damiano took charge as France Under-16’s beat Portugal 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Istanbul.

Also recently
2015 - We lost at Hull City, with Michael Dawson heading in the only goal. Forward Mario Balotelli played his 28th and last reds game.
2016 – We lost the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final 1-0 at Villarreal thanks to a stoppage-time Adrián López strike. However, we won the Anfield return 3-0 to reach the Final in Basel.

Auf wiedersehen Christian
2001 - Christian Ziege played his 32nd and final reds game, coming on as a second-half substitute in our 2-0 win at Coventry City. Sami Hyypiä and Gary McAllister struck the goals inside the final ten minutes, to help send the Sky Blues down.

Births and deaths
1867 - Inside-left Davy Hannah was born in Raffrey, County Down. He signed from Sunderland in November 1894 and struck twelve times in 33 reds games, sometimes alongside his cousin, right-back Andrew Hannah. Davy helped us to the Second Division title in 1896 before moving to Dundee the following year.
1974 - Dominic Matteo was born in Dumfries. He netted twice in 155 games for us before leaving for Leeds United in a £4m deal in August 2000.
2020 – Gini Wijnaldum became a father for the third time, to Julian Emilio.

2006 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley died. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game.
2020 – Forward Michael Robinson died in Madrid. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield in August 1983 from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. In his first season at the club he won the League title and European Cup, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games before moving to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984. He later carved out a highly successful media career in Spain.

A milestone for Barney
1984 - Alan Kennedy netted while playing his 150th consecutive reds game as we were held 2-2 at Anfield by relegation-threatened Ipswich Town. Ian Rush grabbed the other, his 42nd of the season, and 27th in the League. Eric Gates bagged the last two of his five strikes past us.

Mickey’s best goal
1995 - Michael Owen netted what he claims to be his best ever goal as England Under-15’s beat their Scottish counterparts 2-1 in Newcastle.

A rare blank against the Foxes
1973 - We suffered our only goalless home League draw with Leicester City.

Digger’s final England goal
1993 - John Barnes netted his eleventh and final goal for England as they were held 2-2 by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Future red Paul Ince also played.

Friendly thumpings
We have twice comfortably won friendlies on this day in history.
1904 - We won a testimonial for Charlie Parry 4-0 at Oswestry Town, with John Carlin bagging a brace.
1934 – Alf Hanson bagged a treble as we beat Corinthians 6-2 at Anfield, with Vic Wright netting twice and Sam English also scoring.
1930 – We won a testimonial for Partick Thistle’s Alex Lambie 2-1 at Firhill, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson and Jimmy Smith.

In and out
2010 – The transfer of young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton Athletic was confirmed. He eventually signed for an initial £1.7m a month later, striking seven times in 69 senior appearances before moving to Swansea City for an initial £5m in July 2013.
2011 – Former reds Chief Scout Eduardo Macía was appointed Technical Director of Olympiacos.

2016 - A tribunal set the fee for forward Danny Ings’ transfer from Burnley for an initial £6.5m, nine months after his arrival. He has only managed to notch four times in 25 outings due to serious injury and is currently on loan at Southampton for the season.
2022 - Manager Jürgen Klopp and his two Assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders all signed new contracts, tying them to the club until the summer of 2026.

Other reds games
1979 – We drew 0-0 at Nottingham Forest as we edged towards our eleventh League title.
1962 – We won a Second Division match 3-2 at Plymouth Argyle thanks to goals from Alan A’Court, Ian St. John and Roger Hunt.
1956 – John Evans headed us in front as we beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at Eastville in the Second Division before Peter Hooper struck one of his seven goals against the reds. Geoff Twentyman grabbed a late winner, with keeper Doug Rudham in fine form.

Half centurions
2004 - Future red Bolo Zenden bagged his final international goal before joining the reds, while on loan from Chelsea at Middlesbrough. He was winning his fiftieth cap as the Netherlands beat Greece 4-0 in a friendly in Eindhoven.
1993 - Ex-red Ray Houghton won his fiftieth cap for the Republic of Ireland as they drew 1-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Denmark. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton both also played. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Ian Rush, future reds Øyvind Leonhardsen and Jari Litmanen, and ex-red Dean Saunders all also represented their countries that day.

First and last caps
1999 - Future red Mark Kennedy was on target in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Sweden at Lansdowne Road. This was his only goal as a Wimbledon player. Steve Staunton skippered a side that also featured Phil Babb, future red Robbie Keane and ex-red Jason McAteer. Meanwhile, Sami Hyypiä won his 26th cap, and final one as a Willem II player, as Finland drew 1-1 in Slovenia.  Ex-red Don Hutchison bagged his first Scotland goal as they beat Germany 1-0 in Bremen, with future red Dietmar Hamann on the losing side.

2004 - Jari Litmanen won his first cap as a Lahti player, and 86th in total, skippering Finland as they lost a friendly 1-0 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Sami Hyypiä won his sixtieth cap in the same game. Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Rigobert Song both also captained their countries, with Milan Baroš, Jerzy Dudek, Stéphane Henchoz, David Raven, John Arne Riise, Vladimír Šmicer and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Ragnar Klavan and Momo Sissoko also in international action.
1993 - Abel Xavier made his second senior international appearance, and final one while with Estrela de Amadora, as Portugal trounced Scotland 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Lisbon.

Future reds on target
2004 - Fernando Torres bagged his first senior international goal as Spain held Italy to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Genoa. Fellow future reds Xabi Alonso and Fernando Morientes both also played, with Arsenal’s Kolo Toure bagging his first senior goal as Ivory Coast beat Ghana 4-2 in a friendly in France.
1987 - Gary McAllister scored in a B international as Scotland drew 1-1 with France in Aberdeen, with future red Nigel Clough playing for England Under-21’s on the same day.

1982 – Future red John Wark netted Scotland’s goal as they drew their British International Championships match 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park. Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen also played, while future red Michael Robinson was in action for the Republic of Ireland on the same day.
1981 - Hansen also featured for Scotland, alongside Graeme Souness, as Scotland beat Israel 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. Avi Cohen was on the losing side.

England youngsters
1981 - Sammy Lee won his first England Under-21’s cap as they beat Romania 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Swindon’s County Ground.
1982 - He won his fourth cap at that level as they drew 1-1 with Scotland at Maine Road to reach the Final of the European Championships 2-1 on aggregate.

2007 – Future red Dani Pacheco played for Spain Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to England at the new Wembley Stadium.

Also in international action
1898 – Frank Becton played for an English XI as they beat a Scottish XI 2-1 in a Players’ Union International at Ibrox.
1992 – Ex-red Peter Beardsley and future red Julian Dicks both played for England B as they drew 1-1 with the CIS in Moscow. Meanwhile, ex-red Jim Magilton featured as Northern Ireland drew 2-2 with Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Belfast, while Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they lost a friendly 2-0 to Bulgaria in Bern.
2002 – Future red Carl Medjani captained the side on his debut for France Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. Future red Arnaud Buhler featured for Switzerland in their 3-1 defeat of Ukraine in the same competition that day.
2006 – Future red Shane O’Connor played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to Latvia in a tournament game in Italy.
