Trebles away from home
1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games. This was Gérard Houllier's first win in sole charge. Villa's Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick.

1993 - Andy Cole bagged a treble as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United, all inside the first half hour. This was Torben Piechnik's 24th and final reds game, and only one of that season, while former reds Peter Beardsley, Barry Venison and Mike Hooper all featured for the Magpies, under Kevin Keegan. This was later alleged to be one of the games ‘thrown' by Bruce Grobbelaar.
1903 - We also played the Geordies in the top flight, when a Dick Morris goal was enough to hand us victory at Anfield.

1936 - Centre-forward Fred Howe netted a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Manchester United, with Alf Hanson and Harry Eastham also on the scoresheet.

A classic derby comeback
1970 - We came back from 2-0 down with twenty minutes remaining to win the Anfield derby. An Alan Whittle lob and Joe Royle header put the reigning champions in a strong position before a Steve Heighway belter brought us back into the game. John Toshack headed his first reds goal in just his second game to level the match, before Chris Lawler won the game 3-2 with a shot that went in off the post.

A derby first
1896 - The other two derbies staged on this day ended less happily, with the Blues leaving Anfield with a goalless draw. Alf Milward was sent off for the visitors for charging John McCartney to become the only player to be sent off in a derby until Terry McDermott and Gary Stanley 83 years later. The game was described in the press at the time as "utterly unworthy of the best traditions of both organisations and never rose above the standard of mediocrity".
1994 - On-loan Duncan Ferguson and Paul Rideout struck as we lost 2-0 at Goodison Park in what was Joe Royle's first game in charge of the Blues.

Winning seven goal thrillers
We have twice won by the odd goal in seven at Anfield on this day in history.
1931 - Archie McPherson and Robert Done both scored from the spot as Manchester City went home without the points, with Gordon Hodgson and Done again also netting.
1959 - Leyton Orient lost by the same score in our Second Division encounter, with Fred Morris bagging a brace and Jimmy Melia and Dave Hickson on target.

Off on loan
1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves joined Norwich City on loan. He made three appearances for the Canaries before returning to Anfield.
1998 - David Thompson joined First Division Swindon Town on loan. He played ten times for the Robins in his ten weeks at the County Ground, picking up four yellow cards.

Happy birthday
1977 - Ex-reserves midfielder Jamie Cassidy was born in Liverpool. He never made the break-through to our first team, although he had featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996. He joined Cambridge United in July 1999, where he again struggled to make an impact, and was last seen playing for Burscough.

Currency promoted
2001 - Ex-reds defender Richard Money was installed as the new first team coach of Coventry City. He moved from being Director of the Sky Blues' youth academy.

The prince departs
1997 - Paul Dalglish signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer. He only scored twice in just thirteen games for the Magpies, before joining Norwich City.

Strikers on target
2007 - Peter Crouch and Andriy Voronin both netted in European Championships qualifiers, with England losing 3-2 at home to Croatia and Voronin's first goal as a reds player helping the Ukraine to a 2-2 draw with France in Kiev. Ryan Babel, Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypiä, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, John Arne Riise, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos and ex-reds Milan Baroš, Jari Litmanen, Daniel Sjölund and John Toshack all also featured in qualifiers, with Scott Carson wining his second and final cap while on our books.

Scottish reds
1956 - Tommy Younger played in Scotland's 2-0 friendly defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park.
1979 - Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness and future red John Wark all appeared in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Belgium. On the same day, Steve Heighway and ex-red Joey Jones also played in qualifiers.
