YNWA takes a look back at our previous cup encounters with Manchester City as we prepare for the second leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final on Wednesday evening. We have so far won three, drawn one and lost one meeting in the League Cup, in addition to three victories, two draws and two defeats in the FA Cup.
Most recently
Steven Gerrard netted the only goal of the first leg at the Etihad Stadium from the spot two weeks ago, with the reds performing a thoroughly effective rearguard action in the second half.
Ian Rush scored his 48th League Cup goal for the reds in our 4-0 Third Round win at Anfield in October 1995, with three of our goals coming in the final quarter of an hour. He shares the competition record for most goals with Geoff Hurst on 49, having added one with Newcastle United. John Scales, Robbie Fowler also struck before Steve Harkness grabbed his third and final reds goal.
Heading to Wembley glory
We reached our second League Cup Final as a Kenny Dalglish goal was enough to secure a 1-1 draw at Anfield in February 1981, despite an equaliser from Kevin Reeves, to ensure we progressed 2-1 on aggregate. Ray Kennedy had netted the only goal of the first leg after a contested free-kick late on at a wet and windy Maine Road nearly a month earlier, with Reeves earlier having a strike ruled out for an apparent handball.
Also in the League Cup
Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road in September 1969, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop's panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal.
FA Cup milestones
We won 4-0 on a muddy pitch at City in the Sixth Round in front of the live TV cameras in March 1988, on our way to the Final. Ray Houghton, Craig Johnston and John Barnes all netted, to add to a Peter Beardsley penalty, with Johnston's strike being our 500th in the competition. This was our seventh consecutive away victory, and the tenth time we had bagged four in a game that season.
We secured a 4-2 Fourth Round victory at Anfield in February 2001 to help us on our way to part two of the treble. This game was notable for us converting two penalties with different takers - Jari Litmanen early on, our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier's sole charge, and Vladimír Šmicer after the break. The other goals came from Emile Heskey and Markus Babbel. Jamie Carragher played his 250th reds game as we won 1-0 at City in a Third Round meeting, with Danny Murphy on target from the spot in our final ever trip to Maine Road.
Billy misses out
In February 1956, the referee blew for full-time as Billy Liddell's shot was on its way into the net, condemning us to a 2-1 home defeat in an FA Cup Fifth Round replay. Alan Arnell had opened the scoring, with the eventual winner coming in the 89th minute. The groundsman has to paint the lines blue before kick-off due to the pitch being covered with snow. The first meeting had ended goalless at a snowy Maine Road four days earlier, with Liddell having a goal ruled out for offside. City went on to claim the Cup for the third time that season.
Also in the cup
We were held to a goalless draw in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie in February 1973, with City's Mike Summerbee striking the crossbar, before losing the replay 2-0 four days later. Colin Bell and Tommy Booth struck, with both goals coming as a result of free-kicks.
