Happy birthday Quasi
1961 - Peter Beardsley was born in Newcastle. He arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee in July 1987, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 59 times in 175 games. He was controversially sold by Graeme Souness to Everton for £1m in August 1991.
1882 - Forward Sam Gilligan was born in Dundee. He signed from Bristol City in 1910, having featured in the FA Cup Final for them the previous year. He netted sixteen goals in forty games before joining Gillingham in July 1913.
Humbled at Turf Moor
2005 - Antonio Núñez was sent off as Djimi Traore scored a comical own goal to hand Burnley victory in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie. This turned out to be Neil Mellor's 22nd and final game for the club.
Hunting a new record
1969 - Roger Hunt bagged his 234th League goal for the reds, with Alun Evans heading in as we won 2-1 at Chelsea. This took him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League. He ended his career on 245 League goals, still a club record.
A win at last
2003 - We finally won a League game, after a run of eleven matches without tasting victory, with a superb performance at a rain-sodden Southampton. Emile Heskey's first-half header was the highlight of a barnstorming performance.
Through on penalties
1995 - We finally saw off Birmingham City in the replay of our FA Cup Third Round tie. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes with Jamie Redknapp grabbing our goal, and remained that way through extra time as Ian Rush had a goal disallowed. We won the penalty shoot-out 2-0 with Stig Inge Bjørnebye netting the decisive spot-kick, and Jamie Redknapp also converting, as City missed all four of their kicks, while Neil Ruddock's effort was saved. However, we were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur in the Sixth Round that season.
Double firsts against Villa
1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme made his reds bow in a 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield, as Jamie Carragher headed the opener with his first ever senior goal on his first start. Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler were also on the scoresheet.
The sheriff departs
2005 - Salif Diao joined Birmingham City on loan. He only made two senior appearances in his time at St. Andrews, both defeats, and is now with Stoke City.
Thomas off the mark
1992 - Michael Thomas scored his first reds goal in a 3-2 win at Oldham Athletic. The former Arsenal midfielder grabbed the winning goal, after strikes from Steve McManaman and Dean Saunders.
An east end double
1964 - West Ham United completed the only League double over the reds that season, winning 1-0 at Upton Park.
1930 - We also lost 4-1 there with Jim Smith nabbing our consolation as centre-half David Davidson played his 62nd and final reds game.
1983 - We beat the Irons 2-1 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield, thanks to goals from David Hodgson and Graeme Souness.
Four against
1913 - Fred Howard scored all four Manchester City goals on his debut as they beat us 4-1 at their old Hyde Road ground. Jimmy Stewart nabbed our consolation.
For Arthur
1908 - Centre-half Jimmy Harrop made his reds bow as we beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in a First Division match at Anfield. Jack Parkinson struck in a match that was also a benefit game for winger Arthur Goddard.
1947 - We lost 3-0 to Wanderers at Anfield.
Youngsters on the move
2007 - Irish international midfielder Darren Potter was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers after a successful 24-game loan spell. On the same day, winger Adam Hammill joined Dunfermline Athletic on loan, helping them to the Scottish Cup Final at the end of the season. Meanwhile, ex-reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan signed for Boston United on a free transfer from Chester City.
2008 - Second string forward Craig Lindfield moved to Chester City on loan, where he failed to score in seven outings. Meanwhile, Djimi Traoré joined Stade Rennais from Portsmouth on a temporary basis, playing fifteen League games for them.
In and out
1895 - Left-back Tom Wilkie signed from Heart Of Midlothian. He struck once in 64 games for the reds before joining Portsmouth in 1899.
1996 - Mark Walters joined Southampton on a free transfer. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United earlier the following year, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991.
First and last caps
1913 - Ex-red George Latham won his tenth and final cap for Wales, his only one as a Cardiff City player. His former Anfield team-mate Ernest Peake also played for the Welsh as they beat Ireland 1-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Reds half-back Billy Lacey was winning his first cap as a reds player for the Irish and eleventh to date.
1995 - Future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri won the last of his five senior caps for France as they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Utrecht.
Also on the move
1991 - Alex Watson joined Bournemouth for £150,000 after just nine first-team appearances. He is the brother of fellow former reserve Dave Watson, who found greater fame across Stanley Park.
2001 - Former reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Conference side Doncaster Rovers from Wrexham on loan. He played six times in his one month at Belle Vue.
2008 - Ex-reds midfielder Bernard Diomède announced his retirement from playing having been without a club for eighteen months. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000.
