Royston in charge
1994 - Roy Evans had his first game in charge following the departure of Graeme Souness as Manager. He did not get off to an auspicious start, as we needed an Ian Culverhouse own goal to help secure a point at Norwich City, with John Barnes bagging our late leveller as we drew 2-2. City keeper Bryan Gunn was sent off for handling outside the area in the final minute. Despite admitting that Bruce Grobbelaar had not been at fault for either goal, a certain tabloid rag later alleged that he had failed to throw the game as planned, by making an ‘accidental' save.
Pepe off
2006 - Pepe Reina was sent off at Chelsea after clashing with Arjen Robben as we were beaten 2-0. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself substituted. Reds boss Benítez commented after that game, "I'm in a hurry and I must go to the hospital to see how Robben is, he could be in hospital for a week," following his theatrics.
Happy birthday Pako
1963 - Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was born in Spain. He had also served in that role under Rafael Benítez at Valencia, as well as working as their fitness coach. He was recently back at the Mestalla after a spell with SL Benfica.
1987 - Ex-Academy full-back Calum Woods was born in Liverpool. He moved on to Dunfermline Athletic in July 2006 after failing to make the break-through at Anfield.
Didi off the mark
2000 - Dietmar Hamann bagged his first reds goal as we beat Leeds United 3-1 at Anfield. Patrik Berger and substitute Danny Murphy were also on target.
1972 - We also entertained Leeds, being held to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie. Unfortunately, we lost the replay at Elland Road four days later.
Beating the Cottagers
2005 - We beat Fulham 3-1 at Anfield, with Fernando Morientes heading in the opening goal before Andy Cole equalised to become the first player to score against Liverpool for four different Premiership teams. Sami Hyypiä and Milan Baroš were on target in the second half to secure the victory. Rafael Benítez had named an unchanged side from four days previously, something he was not to repeat for another hundred games.
1955 - We also faced Fulham with Tony Rowley and John Evans on target as we won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Craven Cottage.
On the way to more finals
1986 - Kenny Dalglish was on target as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City in the first leg of our Screen Sport Super Cup Semi-final. We won the second leg 3-1 to progress to a two-legged Final against Everton.
1992 - Dean Saunders was on target as we could only draw 1-1 at Second Division Bristol Rovers in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. We won the replay 2-1 as we headed towards Wembley glory that season.
Dumped out of the cup
2003 - First Division Crystal Palace knocked us out of the FA Cup in a Fourth Round replay at Anfield. We failed to convert any of the many chances we created before Palace eventually triumphed 2-0, despite being reduced to ten men during the second half after Dougie Freedman's dismissal.
Wor Kev
1992 - Kevin Keegan was appointed Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He was in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996.
Thommo steps back
1974 - Phil Thompson moved from midfield to centre-half in the place of Larry Lloyd as we beat Coventry City 2-1 at Anfield in a Tuesday afternoon game, played during the three-day week. Alan Waddle hit both the bar and post, with our goals coming from an Alec Lindsay penalty and Kevin Keegan.
Stalemates galore
Just like yesterday, this day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with seven of our seventeen first-class matches ending in stalemate, including three of the last six games. These draws include ones against our greatest rivals.
1921 - Harry Chambers struck as we drew 1-1 at Manchester Untied.
1949 - The Anfield derby ended goalless.
Four goals galore
1898 - Our only defeat on this day came in our first fixture, a thumping 4-0 League loss at home to Sheffield United.
However, we have had two 4-1 League wins on this day.
1966 - Ian St. John bagged a brace as we won at Blackburn Rovers, with Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt also on the scoresheet.
1977 - John Toshack netted twice in our home win over Birmingham City, with Phil Neal, from the spot, and Steve Heighway also on target.
Tommy's century
1938 - Right-back Tommy Cooper played his hundredth League game for the reds as we drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target.
Zico for England
1966 - Future reds legend Phil Neal played in his first trial game for the English Schools FA in Ilford. He went on to win fifty senior caps for his country.
Kitted out
2003 - The club announced that its kit contract with Reebok had been extended until 2010, in a deal worth up to £100m. However, this deal was ended early.
Magilton's Irish bow
1991 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton netted from the spot on his senior debut for Northern Ireland as they beat Poland 3-1 in a friendly at Windsor Park.
Paco in charge
2009 - Former reds First Team Coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Club Deportivo Castellón, although he did not manage to see out the year in charge.
Mason no more
2006 - Legendary Wrexham full-back Stuart Mason died aged 57 in Wrexham. He joined the reds in a joint £26,000 deal along with Peter Wall in October 1966, but failed to break into our first team, returning to the Racecourse Ground after two years.
On the move
2010 - Bulgarian keeper Nikolay Mihaylov was sold to Twente for €1.8m. He had joined the reds from PFC Levski Sofia in July 2007, but work permit problems helped ensure he never played for the first team as he joined Twente on loan just two months after arriving at Anfield.
