Exeter City v Liverpool (24/08/2011) - Down Memory Lane
Monday, 22nd August 2011

YNWA takes a look back at all our previous meetings with the Grecians as we prepare for our Carling Cup Second Round trip to St. James' Park on Wednesday.

Most recently
Ian Rush struck his first two reds goals in domestic competition as we beat Third Division Exeter City 5-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie in October 1981, with Kenny Dalglish reaching a century of reds goals and Terry McDermott and Ronnie Whelan also on target at Anfield. Three weeks later, we triumphed 6-0 at St. James' Park, en route to retaining the trophy. Rush bagged another brace, with Kevin Sheedy nabbing his first goal and Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal adding to a Nicky Marker own goal.

Anfield encounters
Jimmy Case played his 200th reds game as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-0 in October 1979, with both goals scored by substitute David Fairclough.

In January 1950, we beat the Grecians 3-1 in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. Kevin Baron, Willie Fagan and Jimmy Payne grabbed our goals that day. We reached our second Final that year, losing out at Wembley to Arsenal.

For Jimmy
Sam English scored a hat-trick in May 1935 as we won a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray 3-1 at St. James' Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933.
