1992 - Dean Saunders was sold to Aston Villa for £2.3m, just a year and 25 goals in 61 games after arriving from Derby County for a British record £2.9m fee in July 1991.
1986 - Gary Ablett joined Hull City on loan. He made five appearances for the Tigers before returning to Anfield.

1994 - Centre-half John Scales made his reds bow as West Ham United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Tony Cottee was sent off for the Hammers.
Thumping the Trotters
1930 - We secured our record victory over Bolton Wanderers, running out 7-2 winners. Archie McPherson, Dick Edmed and Gordon Hodgson all nabbed braces, with Jimmy Smith completing the scoring.
1949 - We entertained the Trotters in another First Division meeting, with Kevin Baron netting in a 1-1 draw.
Busby for the last time
1938 - Matt Busby struck his third and final reds goal as we beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at Anfield.
Up against Spurs
1952 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield in a top-flight match. John Smith equalised after Eddie Baily had given the visitors the lead, with Billy Liddell converting a late penalty.

Christening Roker Park
1898 - We took part in the first ever game at Roker Park as Sunderland won 1-0 in our First Division encounter thanks to a Jim Leslie strike.

Brough's bow
1910 - Forward Joseph Brough made the first of his eleven reds appearances in our 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers. Jack Parkinson grabbed both our goals.

Goals ruled out
1988 - We drew 1-1 at Aston Villa, with both sides having goals disallowed for offside. Alan McInally netted after having an effort chalked off, with an Ian Rush goal also discounted. Ray Houghton bagged the equaliser with an audacious free-kick chipped past Nigel Spink.
1932 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by the Villains.

1999 - "Michael Owen's Soccer Skills" began its six-week run, airing at 6.45pm on BBC2, and repeated on subsequent Sundays at 11.30am. The first show focused on passing.
Captain Thommo
1980 - Phil Thompson skippered England as they beat Norway 4-0 at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier, with Terry McDermott nabbing two goals, including a penalty. On the same day, future red Mark Lawrenson was on target in the Republic of Ireland's 2-1 World Cup defeat of the Netherlands at Lansdowne Road. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen appeared in Scotland's 1-0 defeat in Sweden.
First and last caps
1985 - Joey Jones won his first cap as a Huddersfield Town player, and 67th to date, as Scotland held Wales to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup qualifier at Ninian Park. Steve Nicol and Ian Rush both also played in this match. Future reds Barry Venison and Mark Walters played in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win for England Under-21's against Romania at Portman Road on the same day.
2008 - Ex-red Steve Finnan won his 53rd and last cap for the Republic of Ireland as they held Montenegro to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Podgorica, with Robbie Keane also featuring.
1997 - Stan Collymore won his third and final cap, and only one as an Aston Villa player, as a substitute in England's 4-0 defeat of Moldova in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Phil Babb, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Jason McAteer, ex-red Steve Staunton and future red Stéphane Henchoz all also featured in World Cup fixtures.
2001 - Andrea Dossena won his fourth and final Under-20's cap as Italy beat Algeria 2-1.
Reds strikers on target
2003 - Michael Owen netted in England's 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying win over Liechtenstein at Old Trafford, as well as skippering the side for part of the game. Steven Gerrard, future red Joe Cole and ex-red David James also featured. On the same day, Milan Baroš was on target as the Czech Republic qualified for the Finals by beating the Netherlands 3-1 in Prague. Vladimír Šmicer also played, while the Dutch had Edgar Davids sent off. Meanwhile, Stéphane Henchoz skippered Switzerland as they lost 4-1 in Russia, with Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypiä, John Arne Riise and future reds Xabi Alonso, Yossi Benayoun, Paul Jones, Christian Poulsen, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all also playing in qualifiers, with Salif Diao playing for Senegal in a 1-0 friendly win in Japan.
Kenny enters a new century
1986 - Kenny Dalglish won his 101st cap for Scotland in their goalless draw with Bulgaria in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. Mark Lawrenson, Ian Rush, Ronnie Whelan and future reds John Aldridge, John Barnes, Dean Saunders all also played for their countries that day.

2008 - Sami Hyypiä captained Finland, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund netting as they drew 3-3 with Germany in a World Cup qualifier in Helsinki, with Miroslav Klose bagging a hat-trick for the away side. Theo Walcott struck a treble for England as they thumped Croatia 4-1 in Zagreb, with future red Joe Cole and ex-reds Emile Heskey and David James featuring. Nicolas Anelka netted his first goal for France as a Chelsea player in their 2-1 victory over Serbia at the Stade de France with ex-red Alou Diarra also in action. Christian Poulsen bagged his first goal as a Juventus player, with Daniel Agger also playing in Denmark's 3-2 win in Portugal. Yossi Benayoun skippered Israel to a 2-1 win in Moldova with Xabi Alonso, Andrea Dossena, Dirk Kuyt, Lucas, Martin Škrtel, Andriy Voronin, future reds Alberto Aquilani, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Luis Suárez and ex-reds Milan Baroš, Mark González and Harry Kewell also playing in qualifiers, with John Toshack taking charge of Wales in Russia.
