We always win in Wales
2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted.
A Fab strike
2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League.
Back to the Cottage
2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day.
1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans and Billy Liddell on target in our 2-1 victory.
Happy birthdays
1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Waterloo. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later, and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year.
1989 - Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. He was released in the summer of 2009 and is now with League Two outfit Accrington Stanley.
1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 the following month, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas.
Anfield trebles
1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forward Dan Cunliffe and defender Joe McQue both played their final reds games.
1895 - We won in the League by the same score in L4 when Jimmy Ross nabbed a brace and Davy Hannah, Harry Bradshaw and Neil Kerr were also on the scoresheet.
1932 - A more welcome hat-trick was scored by Gordon Hodgson, one of his seventeen for the club, in a 4-1 home League win over West Bromwich Albion, when Gordon Gunson also netted.
Beginnings and ends
1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence.
1935 - Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target.
1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal.
European Cup defeats
1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end.
1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross.
International firsts
1889 - Anfield hosted its first ever international as England trounced Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships.
1960 - Future red Ian St. John bagged a brace on his debut for Scotland Under-23's as they drew 4-4 with England at Ibrox. Jimmy Greaves netted a treble for the English.
2010 - Robbie Keane won his first cap while on loan with Celtic as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. David N'Gog and ex-red Mikel San José both featured for the Under-21's on the same day.
1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots.
1903 - He won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships.
A century and a half for the Anfield Iron
1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal.
On the move
1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons.
1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight.
2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances.
