Happy birthday King Kenny
1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. Our current boss is fêted by many as the finest ever reds player. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player, and later as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts.
Other birthdays
1955 - Joey Jones was born in Llandudno. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978.
1984 - Our former American reserves centre-back Zak Whitbread was born in Houston, Texas. He made just seven senior appearances in the cups, and was sold to Millwall for £200,000 in June 2006 after a season-long loan spell at The New Den.
Crazy Horse out of the traps
1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted. He went on to make 665 reds appearances in total.
Setting club records
1978 - Ray Clemence set a club record for a goalkeeper by making his 336th consecutive appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea, with Steve Ogrizovic stepping in to make his debut in the next match. Phil Neal opened the scoring from the spot, our 5,000th League goal to date.
2000 - Liverpool fielded nine non-British born players for the first time, with Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo being the only home-grown talents who started our 1-1 Premiership draw at Old Trafford, when Patrik Berger netted a trademark free-kick.
Red trebles at Anfield
1905 - Jack Parkinson netted three in a 5-0 Second Division victory over Blackpool, with Robert Robinson and Arthur Goddard also scoring.
1950 - We also beat the Seasiders, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell on target in our 2-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win, as we headed towards our second Final.
1981 - Graeme Souness grabbed a hat-trick to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season, in our 5-1 trouncing of CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round first leg, en route to lifting the trophy for the third time. Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott were also on target. The Bulgarians actually made a number of good chances but either missed them, or saw Ray Clemence repel their efforts.
Derby joy
1972 - We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield with our first two strikes being own goals, from keeper Tommy Wright and John McLaughlin, with Wright also putting through his own net in his next game! Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring.
John's last
1939 - Left-half John Browning played his nineteenth and final reds game in our 1-1 home draw with Leicester City, with Phil Taylor bagging our late goal.
Beating the Geordies
We have twice defeated Newcastle United on this day in history.
1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat them 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield.
1899 - We won a friendly at St. James' Park 3-1, with George Allan bagging a treble.
Thumping Oldham
1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. Phil Taylor and Cyril Done both added braces.
1916 - We also beat them in another Wartime League match. Dave Watson and Arthur Metcalf were on target in our 4-1 victory, with Fred Pagnam netting twice.
European disappointment
1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate.
R.I.P. Tom
1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920's, as well as earning full international honours with England.
For Scotland
1922 - Left-back Donald Mackinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle's ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side.
1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side.
1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 at Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Lathom was on the winning side.
Tosh leaves the Vetch
1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge.
Keepers on the move
1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later.
2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan. He made three appearances, and is now back in League football with Accrington Stanley.
Stewart finally departs
1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City.
