Borussia Monchengladbach v Liverpool (01/08/2010) - Down Memory Lane
Saturday, 31st July 2010
YNWA takes a look back at our previous meetings with Borussia Mönchengladbach as we prepare to face them in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

The glory that was Rome
We claimed the European Cup for the first time by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach in May 1977. Rainer Bonhof hit the post for the Germans before Terry McDermott opened the scoring after half an hour, although Alan Simonsen equalised shortly after half-time, capitalising on a loose Jimmy Case back-pass.

After sustaining heavy German pressure, we regained the lead when Tommy Smith rose to head in magnificently from a corner, in his 600th reds game, which was then assumed to be his final outing. Seven minutes from time, Kevin Keegan, playing in his 323rd and last reds match, was felled by Berti Vogts in the area, and Phil Neal stepped up to convert from the spot. Then the party could really start.

First European trophy
We beat won 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final in May 1973. Kevin Keegan netted a brace, with Larry Lloyd also on the scoresheet, while both keepers saved a penalty in the game, from Keegan and Jupp Heynckes. The game had been abandoned a day earlier due to bad weather, with Shanks bringing in John Toshack for Brian Hall for the rearranged game.

We lost the second leg 2-0 thirteen days later with Jupp Heynckes getting both inside ten first-half minutes. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season.

Heading to Wembley
We lost 2-1 in first leg of the European Cup Semi-final in March 1978, with David Johnson netting a late equaliser before Rainer Bonhof's free-kick put the home side ahead after a rare Ray Clemence error a minute later. Ian Callaghan made his 857th and final reds appearance. However, we won the Anfield return 3-0 two weeks later, with Ray Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case netting.

Previous friendly meetings
A testimonial match was played at Anfield in March 1979 for long-serving skipper Emlyn Hughes. The German side won 1-0 in front of a crowd of 25,290, raising gate receipts of £39,500. We won 4-2 in Germany five months later thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Kenny Dalglish, Ray Kennedy and Graeme Souness.

We helped the German town of Fulda celebrate its 1,250th anniversary in our most recent meeting in July 1994, winning 1-0 in the Firestone International Challenge Cup thanks to a Neil Ruddock goal.
