Birth of a king
1922 - Billy Liddell was born in Townhill, Dunfermline. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. He was on target on his 27th birthday as we beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with Albert Stubbins grabbing a brace and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet.
In comes Souey
1978 - Graeme Souness signed from Middlesbrough for £352,000 after 22 goals in 176 League games. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in six years as a reds player, netting 55 times in 359 games. His later time as Manager was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph, along with the controversial dismantling of the legendary Boot Room, and his infamous liaison with a certain tabloid newspaper.
Debut of the Mighty Mullet
2001 - Jari Litmanen made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace in the first leg of the Worthington Cup Semi-final, with Vladimír Šmicer netting our goal. We emphatically turned things around in the Anfield return, progressing 6-2 on aggregate.
Up against the Potters
1970 - We won 2-0 at Stoke City's Victoria Ground thanks to goals from Bobby Graham and Peter Thompson.
2009 - We were held to a goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium, with Steven Gerrard striking the crossbar late on.
Jonah makes a splash
2004 - On-loan keeper Paul ‘Jonah' Jones made his reds bow as we beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a Mark Delaney own goal. He therefore became our oldest post-war debutant aged 36 years and 267 days.
1981 - We also faced the Villains, going down 2-0 to the eventual champions in the Midlands.
Get Carter
1991 - Jimmy Carter signed from Millwall for £800,000 after twelve goals in 130 games for the Lions. He moved on to Arsenal for £500,000 after just nine months and eight appearances in his time at Anfield.
More ins and outs
1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed from Rosenborg BK on a free transfer. He went on to make 54 reds appearances without scoring, but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for.
2007 - Left-winger Sebastián Leto signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He made just four senior appearances, and moved permanently to Panathinaikos in July 2009 after spending the previous season on loan at Olympiacos.
2010 - Andriy Voronin was sold to Dinamo Moskva for £1.8m after six strikes in forty reds outings, following his free transfer signing from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in July 2007.
Penblwydd hapus
1984 - John Welsh was born in Liverpool. The young midfielder only made ten senior reds appearances, and joined Hull City in January 2007 after a loan spell. He is now playing for Tranmere Rovers in League One.
North-east disappointment
We have twice visited the North East in the FA Cup on this day in history.
1920 - We drew 1-1 at South Shields in the First Round, with Harry Lewis grabbing our goal. We won the Anfield replay, but went out to Huddersfield Town in the Fourth Round that season.
1953 - We lost 1-0 at Gateshead in the Third Round.
Management moves
2011 - Steve Clarke joined the reds as First-team Coach under King Kenny. On the same day, ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Ipswich Town.
2002 - Steve Nicol was named Assistant Coach of New England Revolution. He was appointed permanent head coach ten months later, taking them to the final of the MLS play-offs in his first full season in charge.
Sheila's farewell
2008 - The funeral of Club Secretary Sheila Walsh took place at St. Mary's The Virgin, Waterloo. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, "Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering."
Prince Kenny
1972 - Celtic's Kenny Dalglish won the first of his four caps for Scotland Under-23's as they beat a West German Olympics XI 1-0 at Hampden Park.
A Merseyside centenary
1983 - We took part in a centenary friendly for Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. David Johnson, Phil Neal and Ronnie Whelan scored as we won 3-1.
Harry on target
2011- Ex-red Harry Kewell struck for Australia as they beat India 4-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Finals group game in Qatar.
Ryan in trouble
2011 - Ryan Babel was charged by the FA with improper conduct relating to tweeting about referee Howard Webb after our recent defeat at Manchester United.
Also on the move
1996 - Don Hutchison joined Sheffield United from West Ham United for £1.2m. He bagged six goals in 91 games while at Bramall Lane, before moving back to Merseyside to join Everton in February 1998 for £1m.
2002 - Jermaine Pennant joined Watford on loan from Arsenal. He struck twice in nine games for the Hornets, and returned to Vicarage Road for a second loan spell ten months later.
