Transfer deadline day drama
2011 - We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of up to €26.5m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record.
On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers.
In comes Al
2007 - Álvaro Arbeloa signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m. He struck twice in 98 senior outings, playing right across the back four and impressing with his solid performances before moving to Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano signed on loan from West Ham United in a deal that was still to be approved by the Premier League. He netted twice in 139 outings in total, signing on permanently for £18.6m in February 2008. He left for Barcelona in a €22m in August 2010.
Also on the same day, young Spanish midfielder Francis Durán signed from Málaga for a compensation fee, while Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Huth arrived from Tacuary. Neither made the break-through at Anfield and have since moved on.
Tosh's treble
1976 - John Toshack bagged a genuine hat-trick of right-foot and left-foot shots and then a header as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Upton Park. Kevin Keegan netted our other goal late on.
Red villains
We have twice won 2-0 at Aston Villa on this day over the years.
1988 - The first occasion was in a live televised Fourth Round FA Cup tie on our way to the Final when John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored, with Bruce Grobbelaar recalled in goal following an injury that had seen Mike Hooper fill in for the previous four fixtures, as we secured a club record ninth consecutive clean sheet.
1996 - Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler gave us a Premiership victory.
Death of Sir John
1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. He had overseen eleven League titles and four European Cups amongst our many honours during his seventeen years in charge of the club.
No change of ownership
2007 - DIC abandoned their proposed £450m takeover of the club, after David Moores decided to reconsider his options in the light of a revised bid from George Gillett.
King Neptune sails in
2002 - Abel Xavier made the short trip across Stanley Park for £800,000. He netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Derby stalemate
2004 - A very entertaining Anfield derby somehow ended goalless with Jerzy Dudek and especially Nigel Martyn pulling off a string of fine stops.
Clem's League start
1970 - Ray Clemence made the first of his 470 League appearances for the reds as we lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.
Off on loan
2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, bagging just one goal in ten outings. He had only netted nine times in 66 reds games, although two thirds of these appearances came from off the bench. On the same day, reserves defender David Raven moved to Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season, after having only made four senior appearances for the reds.
2005 - Craig Bellamy joined Celtic on loan from Newcastle United, after 43 goals in 128 outings for the Geordies. He struck nine goals in fifteen games for the Bhoys, helping them to claim the Scottish FA Cup. On the same day, Jermaine Pennant joined Birmingham City on loan from Arsenal. He played twelve times in this spell before signing permanently the following July.
1997 - Lee Jones joined Wrexham for a third loan spell, making six first-team appearances this time around.
Out-foxed
1981 - Leicester City won 2-1 at Anfield, becoming the first side to complete a League double over us for six seasons, with our score coming from an Alan Young own goal. This was our first home defeat for three years, after 85 games without being beaten.
A good cup day
We have won all five of our FA Cup ties on this day over the years, conceding just once.
1990 - The most recent game saw us beat Norwich City 3-1 in a Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Steve Nicol and John Barnes scored, with Peter Beardsley adding a penalty. We made it as far as the Semi-final that season before losing out to Crystal Palace.
Up against ten
1993 - Nigel Winterburn was sent off for Arsenal as we won 1-0 at Highbury, the first dismissal for an opposing team against us in the newly renamed Premier League. John Barnes converted a penalty, while David James saved a Paul Merson spot-kick.
On our way to Wembley
1914 - We defeated non-League Gillingham 2-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Bob Ferguson bagging his second and final reds goal. Billy Lacey also struck as we reached the FA Cup Third Round. We made it to the Final for the first time that year, but sadly lost out to Burnley.
Joe born
1934 - Winger Joe Dickson was born in Liverpool. He bagged four goals in six reds games after signing pro terms in June 1952.

2000 - Tranmere Rovers boss John Aldridge was named the Liverpool Echo's Sports Personality Of The Year.
2002 - El-Hadji Diouf was named BBC African Player Of The Year, voted for by visitors to BBC Sport Online and listeners to the World Service's Fast Track programme.
Other moves
2006 - Danny Murphy joined Tottenham Hotspur from Charlton Athletic for a fee of up to £2m, having struck ten times in 64 games for the Addicks. On the same day, former reserves forward Steven Gillespie left Bristol City for Cheltenham Town on a free transfer, after two previous loan spells with the Gloucestershire outfit. He had netted just once in seventeen run-outs for City.
2008 - Jari Litmanen joined Fulham on transfer deadline day, but failed to make a first-team appearance for them. Lee Peltier joined Yeovil Town permanently, after a successful loan spell, while Besian Idrizaj joined Wacker Innsbruck on loan. Paul Dalglish signed for Hibernian from Livingston, with keeper Tony Warner moving to Barnsley on loan from Fulham.
JAR for his country
2000 - AS Monaco's John Arne Riise made his international debut as he played in Norway's goalless Nordic Cup draw in Iceland.
Former strikers break out their passports
2005 - Nicolas Anelka joined Fenerbahçe SK from Manchester City for £7m. He struck fourteen times in 39 games for them before returning to England to join Bolton Wanderers in August 2006. Also on the move was ex-red Titi Camara who joined Ligue 2 side Amiens after two years in the Middle East. He bagged six goals in thirteen League games in his first season back in France.
Wright in the wrong
2006 - Mark Wright was sacked as Manager of Peterborough United for gross misconduct, after failing to appear before the board. It is alleged that he made a racist comment to one of his staff, although he always denied the charge.
Thommo on the move
2007 - David Thompson joined Bolton Wanderers from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. He had played just fifteen times for Pompey since arriving the previous July, but made just eight appearances for the Trotters before being released, and he has since retired from the game.
Youngsters in action
2009 - Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they drew 1-1 with Ronald Huth's Paraguay in the final phase of the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" tournament in Venezuela, with both players being cautioned.
