Red trebles
1999 - Robbie Fowler bagged a treble as we secured our best ever Premiership win, thrashing Southampton 7-1 at Anfield, with future loanee Paul Jones in the Saints' goal. Dominic Matteo grabbed his first reds goal while Michael Owen, David Thompson and even Jamie Carragher were also on target. Robbie's second goal was his hundredth League strike.
1909 - Inside-left Ronald Orr netted three as we beat Lincoln City 5-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson nabbed the others.
In comes Roy
1964 - Roy Evans signed for the reds on the newly introduced ‘B' form, a precursor to a full apprenticeship. He became one of the club's greatest servants, serving as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years.
Xabi Alonso eat your heart out
1926 - Reds left-back Donald Mackinlay scored from ten yards inside his own half, as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park. Tom Scott grabbed the other.
Nando's century
2011 - Fernando Torres played his hundredth League game as we were held to a 2-2 derby draw at Anfield, Kenny Dalglish's first home game of his second spell in charge. Raúl Meireles scored his first reds goal to open the scoring, with Dirk Kuyt salvaging a point from the spot after we fell behind in the second half.
Maxi's bow
2010 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Stoke City, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos giving us the lead with his first reds goal. Maxi Rodríguez made his reds bow, while this was the first time we had played a first-class match since shirt numbers were introduced when no player was wearing any of the numbers from one to eleven. Robert Huth grabbed a last-minute equaliser after we had been denied a strong penalty claim for a challenge on Lucas, with there still being time for Dirk Kuyt to head against a post.
1897 - George Allan bagged the only goal of our home game with Stoke. Billy Heames had to go off injured shortly after the break, reducing the visitors to ten men for the rest of the game.
Lawro's last
1988 - Mark Lawrenson was substituted with an ankle injury in our 2-0 Anfield defeat of Arsenal that led to his retirement from playing just two months later aged thirty. This was his 356th and last reds game. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley netted as we stretched our unbeaten run to 23 games that season.
European defeat
1985 - We lost 2-0 at Juventus in the UEFA Super Cup, with Zbigniew Boniek grabbing both the goals.
Happy birthdays
1961 - Former goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena was born in San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa in Spain. He had previously coached the goalkeepers under Rafael Benítez at Valencia as well as for the Spanish national team, and is now back at the Mestalla.
1881 - Scottish wing-half Tommy Fairfoul was born in West Calder, Midlothian. He signed from Third Lanark in 1913 and played 71 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being suspended for the match rigging scandal against Manchester United in April 1915. He then became a taxi owner in Liverpool.
1919 - Centre-half John Easdale was born in Dumbarton. He only played two senior games after arriving from junior football in February 1937, moving down into the Third Division in 1948.
Four against
1932 - George Brown scored four goals for Aston Villa as they thumped us 6-1 at Villa Park. Harold Barton grabbed our consolation.
Beaten on the road
1954 - We suffered our twentieth straight away League defeat as we lost 2-1 at Preston North End. Unsurprisingly, this remains a club record. Inside-forward Kevin Baron struck his 32nd goal in his 153rd and final reds game.
1971 - Gerry Queen struck the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace beat us for the first time at the sixth time of asking in all competitions, in our League meeting at Selhurst Park.
Seeing red
1960 - Dave Hickson was sent off after two quick-fire late bookings as we beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Jimmy Melia also on the scoresheet.
Beating the Blues
1943 - We defeated Everton 2-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Jack Balmer and Cyril Done on target.
Beating the Wearsiders
We have twice beaten Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield in the First Division on this day in history.
1904 - Sam Raybould and Jack Cox were on target.
1915 - Tom Miller and Fred Pagnam netted in the final minutes.
Digger for the League
1991 - John Barnes represented the Football League in a game against an Italian League side in Napoli.
New bosses
2008 - Kevin Keegan was announced as Manager of Newcastle United for the second time, to jubilant scenes on Tyneside. However, he only stayed for eight months, winning just six out of his 21 games.
2006 - Roy Hodgson took over as Manager of Finland, having been appointed the previous August.
Young debutants
2000 - Future red Alberto Aquilani made his debut for Italy Under-15's in their goalless draw with Uruguay.
1974 - Future red Terry McDermott won his only Under-23's cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Wales at Ashton Gate.
Prudhoe on the move again
1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Walsall. He did not make a first-team appearance while at Hillsborough, as was the case when he arrived at Anfield in November 1994.
