On this day in Liverpool history - 11th January
Wednesday, 11th January 2012

In comes Martin
2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m to become our most expensive defender to date. The tough Slovakian has so far appeared 149 times, only finding the net five times. Unfortunately, he has also twice put through his own net. On the same day, ex-red Nicolas Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers for £15m, netting 59 times in 185 appearances before signing for Shanghai Shenhua last month.

Happy birthday Emile
1978 - Emile Heskey was born in Leicester. He arrived from Leicester City for a then club record £10.5m in March 2000, and struck sixty goals in 223 reds games, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in his four years at Anfield. He moved to Birmingham City for £6.25m in May 2004.

Carra's League bow
1997 - Jamie Carragher made his League debut in a goalless draw with West Ham United at Anfield.

Two in
2007 - Young Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed on loan from Boca Juniors, making the move permanent in August 2007. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, leaving permanently for Sporting Clube de Portugal a year later. On the same day, Swedish attacking midfielder Astrit Ajdarević reportedly signed from Falkenbergs FF. He has yet to make the first-team squad.

Meanwhile, Djimi Traoré joined Portsmouth from Charlton Athletic for £1m, after just five months with the Addicks. He turned out fifteen times for Pompey, after just thirteen outings in south London, and is now with AS Monaco.

A Cup record
1922 - We thrashed Sunderland 5-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay, our record win in the competition against top-flight opposition. Dick Forshaw and Harry Chambers both bagged braces, with Walter Wadsworth also on target.

800 for Cally
1977 - Ian Callaghan made his 800th reds appearance as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Selhurst Park in an FA Cup Third Round replay, on our way to Wembley that season. Paul Hinshelwood gave the visitors the lead from distance before Kevin Keegan equalised, with Steve Heighway then bagging a brace, and George Graham adding a late second for Palace. Cally played a club record 857 games in total.

League Cup wins
2005 - Steven Gerrard bagged the only goal of the game as we beat First Division Watford 1-0 in the first leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. We won the return by the same score to reach our tenth League Cup Final.
1995 - An Ian Rush strike handed us a 1-0 Coca-Cola Cup win over Arsenal at Anfield. We went on to claim the trophy that season.
1896 - We also beat Woolwich Arsenal at Anfield with Jimmy Ross netting twice in our 3-0 victory and Joe McQue also striking.

Between the sticks only once
1902 - Keeper William Marshall played his only reds game as we were thumped 4-0 by Everton at Goodison Park, a then record derby score.

Anfield milestones
2003 - Michael Owen scored our 400th goal at Anfield in the Premiership as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa.
1950 - Inside-forward Willie Fagan bagged his fiftieth reds strike in our 2-1 FA Cup Third Round replay defeat of Blackburn Rovers, with Jimmy Payne also netting.

Signing on
2010 - Young forward Nathan Eccleston signed a new contract until June 2013. He made his reds bow in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009, and has so far made nine senior appearances without finding the back of the net.
2011 - French reserves left-back Chris Mavinga joined Belgian side Koninklijke Racing Club Genk on loan. He played nine times before being sold to Stade Rennais for £1m last July.

Up against the Hatters
We have twice faced Luton Town on this day in recent years.
1987 - We were held to a goalless draw in blizzard conditions on the plastic pitch at Kenilworth Road in the FA Cup Third Round. We were eventually knocked out in a second replay after another goalless meeting.
1992 - We won 2-1 in a League game at Anfield, with Steve McManaman and Dean Saunders on the scoresheet inside the final five minutes. Luton's score came from a terrible Nicky Tanner own goal in front of the Kop.

Mixed fortunes against the Rams
1908 - We beat Derby County 4-2 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield, thanks to goals from Jack Cox, James Gorman, James Bradley and Jack Parkinson. Unfortunately, we lost to Newcastle United two rounds later.
1975 - We lost 2-0 at the Baseball Ground in a First Division encounter.

Harry yet again
1919 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his third consecutive game as we beat Southport Vulcan 3-0 at Anfield in a Wartime League match. Thomas Page added both the others.

Derby despair
1941 - We were thumped 4-1 at Goodison Park in a game that counted for both the Wartime League and the Lancashire Senior Cup. John Shafto netted our consolation.

On the move
2005 - Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined League Two Cheltenham Town on loan from Bristol City. He signed on permanently a year later, but moved to Colchester United for £400,000 in July 2008 after a total of 33 goals in 95 games for the Robins.
2003 - Grégory Vignal joined French side Bastia on loan for the rest of the season. He was last seen playing for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens, although he left them in December 2010.

1999 - Reserves keeper Jørgen Nielsen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, failing to make it into the first team. He also never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997.
