YNWA takes a look back at previous memorable League meetings at Molineux as we prepare to visit Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 45th time in the League visit on Tuesday, all of which have come in the top flight. We have a fairly average record at Wolves, having won fourteen, drawn nine and been beaten 21 times.
Most recently
Jamie Carragher made his comeback from a broken leg in January 2004, playing his 200th League game as a late Kenny Miller strike denied us all three points after Bruno Cheyrou had put us ahead. This was our 200th League match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge, which had been rearranged after a flooded pitch before Christmas.
Clinching the title
Bob Paisley secured his first League title as Manager in May 1976, and our ninth in total, a record. Steve Kindon opened the scoring for the home side after a quarter of an hour, with the reds not replying until the last fifteen minutes, when goals from Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Ray Kennedy gave us a 3-1 win, condemning Wolves to relegation.
Goals from Joe Hewitt and Arthur Goddard handed us a 2-0 win in April 1906, and with it our second Championship. Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer struck in a 2-1 victory as we clinched our fourth League title in May 1947.
Reds debutants
Bruce Grobbelaar, Craig Johnston and Mark Lawrenson all made their debuts as we went down to a 1-0 defeat in August 1981 as we kicked off a new season.
Shanks fielded eleven reserves in April 1965, just five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored his only goal in his one reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target in a 3-1 win, in front of just 13,839 fans. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper William Molyneux also played their only senior reds games.
Forward Sam English and full-back Ben Dabbs made their reds bows in a 3-2 defeat in August 1933. David Wright netted with Gordon Hodgson on target from the spot. In March 1902, outside-right Arthur Goddard made the first of his 415 reds appearances in a 3-1 defeat. Sam Raybould netted our consolation.
Uncle Joe starts out
Joe Fagan's first League game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw in August 1983. Alan Kennedy conceded a penalty against Andy Gray, and did the same later in the season after he had moved to Everton. Ian Rush was on target for the reds.
Milestone games
Ian Callaghan played his 500th League game as we were held to a goalless draw in August 1974. Tommy Smith played his 150th consecutive reds game as we drew 1-1 in March 1968, with Roger Hunt bagging our goal. It was also the Anfield Iron's 114th straight League appearance. Alan Hansen headed his first League goal, the only goal of the game in April 1979.
Left-half Bill Goldie made his 128th consecutive reds appearance, and 119th straight game in the League, as we won 2-0 in April 1903 in our last game of the season, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Cox.
Big wins
We recorded our equal biggest win over Wolves, as Roger Hunt, ex-Wolves star Alun Evans and Peter Thompson all netted braces in a 6-0 thumping in September 1968.
Well beaten
We suffered our worst League defeat at Molineux in November 19080, going down 4-1, with Phil Neal bagging our consolation. Ex-red Emlyn Hughes bagged their fourth, and was then whisked away by Eamonn Andrews to film ‘This Is Your Life'. We lost 3-0 in March 1953.
Reds farewells
South African forward Lance Carr bagged his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-1 defeat in November 1935. Right-half Ted Savage played his 105th and final reds game as we lost 2-0 in October 1937.
