Happy birthdays
1985 - Momo Sissoko was born in Mont Saint Agnain, France. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once. He had previously been signed by Rafael Benítez while he was in Spain, from Auxerre, and was sold to Juventus for £8.2m in January 2008.

1971 - Former striker Stan Collymore was born in Stone. He netted 35 times in 81 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for a British record £8.5m fee in July 1995. He was offloaded to Aston Villa in February 2000 for £7m, where he again failed to fulfil his potential.

1986 - Ex-reserves keeper David Martin was born in Romford. The son of West Ham United centre-back Alvin signed from MK Dons for £250,000 in January 2006 and sat on the bench nineteen times without making a senior appearance, returning to Stadium:mk in May 2010.
1980 - Physiotherapist Matt Konopinski was born in Leeds. He joined the club in February 2009 from Barnsley and primarily works with our reserves.

In comes Thommo
1971 - Phil Thompson signed for the club from Kirkby Schools, the day after his seventeenth birthday. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media.

Fernando's farewell
2011 - Fernando Torres struck his last two reds goals as we won 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Raúl Meireles' stunning volley coming between his strikes. We opened the scoring by breaking Wolves' offside trap, with Richard Keys and Andy Gray's disparaging remarks about the female assistant referee on Sky leading to their eventual departure. Ex-reds reserve Adam Hammill made his debut for the home side as a substitute.

Warnock walks
2007 - Stephen Warnock was sold to Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be £1.5m. He had played 67 reds games, netting just once, and turned out 109 times for Rovers, striking six times, before joining Aston Villa in August 2009. On the same day, Milan Baroš joined Olympique Lyonnais from Aston Villa in a swap deal for John Carew, after fourteen goals in 51 games for Villa.

A record crowd
2006 - The then biggest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League, of 67,874, witnessed a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when we succumbed to a late Rio Ferdinand goal.
2002 - The previous record was just 275 supporters fewer, set when Danny Murphy grabbed a late winner as we won at Old Trafford for the second season in a row.

Yet another treble
1927 - Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we beat Derby County 3-2 at Anfield.

We've only got one Song
1999 - Rigobert Song signed from Italian club Salernitana for £2.6m. Rigo made 38 reds appearances without scoring, before joining West Ham United as part of a joint deal with Titi Camara in November 2000.
2008 - He played for his country, winning his 113th cap as Cameroon lost 4-2 to Egypt in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana.

Cally's milestone

South coast despair

Other birthdays
1878 - Left-half Bill Goldie was born in Hurlford, Ayrshire. He joined his brother Archie at Anfield in November 1897 from Clyde, and bagged six goals in 174 reds appearances, helping us to our first ever League title in 1901, moving to Fulham in January 1904.
1962 - Former reserves keeper Stephen Pears was born in Brandon in County Durham. He left Middlesbrough with the reputation as perhaps their best-ever custodian, but was merely back-up to David James at Anfield, sitting on the bench just five times.
1985 - Ex-reserves full-back Stephen Vaughan was born in Liverpool. He was released in 2004, going on to play 85 times for Chester City.

1955 - Billy Liddell and John Evans both nabbed braces as we beat them 4-1 at Anfield in a Second Division encounter, with one of Liddell's goals coming from the spot.

McAteer on the way up
1992 - Jason McAteer joined Bolton Wanderers from Marine on a free transfer. He bagged fifteen goals in 145 outings for the Trotters, including lining up against the reds in the Coca-Cola Cup Final in 1995, before moving to Anfield five months later.

Derby despair
1944 - Willie Fagan netted as we were thumped 4-1 at Anfield by Everton in a Wartime League match.

On the move
2000 - Young keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Third Division Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer. His finest moment at Anfield was helping us win our first FA Youth Cup in 1996. He is now playing for Accrington Stanley in League Two.
2009 - Reserves forward Jordy Brouwer joined RKC Waalwijk on loan, playing five League games for them before returning to our reserves.

Finn stands down
