Beating the Mancs at last
2006 - Peter Crouch headed the only goal of the game as we beat Manchester United in an FA Cup tie for the first time in 85 years, in our Fifth Round fixture at Anfield. United substitute Alan Smith broke his leg in a challenge with John Arne Riise. We of course went on to claim the trophy for the seventh time at the end of the season.
1976 - We also faced the Red Devils, holding them to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in a League fixture.
Ten of the best
1896 - We registered our all-time record League victory. George Allan scored four and Malcolm McVean grabbed a hat-trick in our 10-1 Second Division win over Rotherham Town at Anfield. Jimmy Ross added a brace, with Francis Becton also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, only 2,000 supporters were present that day.
Five on the look-out
2010 - We played in our first game to be officiated by five match officials as a late David N'Gog header was enough to defeat Romanian side Unirea Urziceni in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie at Anfield.
Mighty Mouse in charge of England
1999 - Kevin Keegan was appointed interim Manager of England, while still in charge of Fulham. He handled both jobs for three months before taking charge of the national side permanently.
Dalglish's birthday
1977 - King Kenny's son Paul was born in Glasgow. He never made a first-team appearance in fifteen months at Anfield, and has since played for a host of clubs.
1898 - Winger Cyril Gilhespy was born in Fencehouses, County Durham. He signed from Sunderland in August 1921, scoring three times in nineteen outings before moving to Bristol City in May 1925.
1910 - Forward Lance Carr was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He signed from Boksburg in September 1933 and struck eight times in 33 games before moving to Newport County in October 1936, whom he helped to claim to the Third Division South title.
Four three times

1961 - The first occasion came when we won 4-1 at Derby County in the Second Division, with Jimmy Melia grabbing a brace, to add to goals from Dave Hickson and Kevin Lewis.
1996 - We thrashed Shrewsbury Town 4-0 in an 11am kick off at Gay Meadow in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Stan Collymore, Jason McAteer and Robbie Fowler netting before a Dave Walton own goal completed the scoring. This was our first game since Bob Paisley's death four days previously, as we continued on our way to the Wembley final.
2001 - We secured a 4-2 FA Cup Fourth Round victory over Manchester City at Anfield to help us on our way to part two of the treble. This game was notable for us converting two penalties with different takers - Jari Litmanen early on, our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier's sole charge, and Vladimír Šmicer after the break. The other goals came from Emile Heskey and Markus Babbel.
Jocky's last stand
1987 - Alan Hansen won his 26th and final cap for Scotland as they lost 1-0 at Hampden Park to the Republic of Ireland in a European Championships qualifier, thanks to Mark Lawrenson's fifth and final goal for his country, his defensive partner at club level. John Aldridge won his first cap as a reds player, his eighth in total, while Ronnie Whelan played at full-back, with future red Ray Houghton also featuring.
On the same day, Ian Rush won his thirtieth cap as Wales were held to a goalless friendly draw in Swansea by the USSR. Future red Dean Saunders won his fifth cap as a substitute, his final appearance while still a Brighton & Hove Albion player. Meanwhile, future red Peter Beardsley played in England's 4-2 friendly defeat of Spain in Madrid, and ex-red Avi Cohen featured in Israel's 1-1 friendly draw with Northern Ireland in Tel-Aviv.
Jack's treble
1905 - Forward Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick as we won 6-2 at Hull City's old ground The Boulevard in a friendly. John Carlin, Alex Raisbeck and Sam Raybould were also on target.
1989 - We also beat the Tigers, winning an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 3-2 at Boothferry Park thanks to a John Barnes goal and a brace from John Aldridge, having trailed 2-1 at half time. Steve Nicol skippered the side in the absence of both Ronnie Whelan and Alan Hansen, while Alex Watson had to replace the injured Gary Gillespie inside the first ten minutes. We of course went on to claim the trophy for the fourth time that season.
Mixed fortunes against the Villains
1939 - We lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a top-flight encounter with George Patterson playing his third and final reds game.
1967 - Ian St. John bagged the only goal of our FA Cup Fourth Round meeting at Anfield. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Everton at the next hurdle.
Done deal
1926 - Right-back Robert Done signed as an amateur from Runcorn, signing professional terms two months later. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games, moving on to Reading for £150 in May 1935.
Didi's half century
2004 - Dietmar Hamann won his fiftieth cap for Germany as they won 2-1 in a friendly in Croatia. Future red Xabi Alonso, Jerzy Dudek, Stéphane Henchoz and John Arne Riise all also represented their countries that evening.
Top award for the Museum
2000 - The club's Museum & Tour Centre scooped a prestigious award at the Merseyside Tourism Awards, claiming the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo award for Best Customer Care, as voted for by the people of Liverpool.
First and last caps
2004 - Robbie Foy made his debut for Scotland Under-21's as they lost 2-1 to Hungary in a friendly in Livingston. On the same day, ex-red Jason McAteer won his 52nd and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they held Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. Andriy Voronin won his last cap as a 1. FC Köln player on the same day in a 1-1 friendly draw in Libya.
1976 - Future reds Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both won their final caps for Scotland at Under-23's level as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a European Championships qualifier in Breda.
Stewart on target
1992 - Future red Paul Stewart netted in England B's 3-0 defeat of their French counterparts at Loftus Road. Fellow future red Paul Ince also played.
St. Michael for England
2004 - Michael Owen played as England drew 1-1 in a friendly in Portugal, with Jamie Carragher, Emile Heskey and future red Joe Cole also featuring. Ex-red David James won his first cap as a Manchester City player, and 22nd in total.
1997 - Michael turned out for the Under-18's as they thumped their Scottish counterparts 4-1 in a friendly.
On the move
1994 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Kevin Lampkin signed for Mansfield Town on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after thirteen appearances for the Terriers. He struck three goals in 45 games for the Stags before moving down to the Conference to play for Hednesford Town.
