R.I.P. Bob Paisley
1996 - The most successful manager in the English game, Bob Paisley, died aged 77. He led us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five FA Charity Shields in his nine years in charge. R.I.P. Bob.
1942 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick died. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. He top scored with ten goals as they were relegated to the Second Division, before moving on to Southampton in the Southern League. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics.
Happy birthday Kev
1951 - Kevin Keegan was born in Armthorpe, Yorkshire. He arrived for £33,000 from Scunthorpe United in May 1971 and netted exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV for £500,000 in June 1977.
1975 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Phil Charnock was born in Southport. He became our youngest ever player in Europe when he came on as a substitute against Apollon Limassol in September 1992, only playing two senior games in total before moving to Crewe Alexandra in December 1986.
1872 - Forward Gerald Dewhurst was born in London. He only played one reds game, guesting for us as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 in a Second Division fixture in March 1894, while remaining an amateur player with Corinthians.
Trebles galore
We have been treated to a number of hat-tricks on this day over the years.
1998 - Michael Owen notched a treble in a 3-3 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
Our previous two fixtures on this day also witnessed hat-tricks.
1994 - Matt Le Tissier struck three goals, including two penalties, in Southampton's 4-2 League win at The Dell, with the home side racing into a four-goal lead, as his first goal came after just 28 seconds. Julian Dicks converted a penalty after the snow fell, with Ian Rush also on target in what was Alan Ball's first home game in charge of the Saints.
1987 - Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick to help secure a 4-3 League win over Leicester City at Anfield, with Paul Walsh also on the scoresheet.
1931 - Another red scored a hat-trick at Hillsborough, as Gordon Hodgson notched four times, including a penalty, in our 5-3 League win over Sheffield Wednesday, with David Wright also on target.
Dick's birthday
1904 - Outside-right Dick Edmed was born in Gillingham. He signed from his hometown club for £1,800 in January 1926 and netted 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday.
Into the final
1978 - We held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury in our League Cup Semi-final second leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate. However, we lost the Final to Nottingham Forest, after a replay.
1984 - We reached our fourth consecutive Final in the competition, winning the second leg of our Semi-final 2-0 at Third Division Walsall thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan, to go through 4-2 on aggregate. Unfortunately, seventeen travelling supporters needed hospital treatment when a barrier crumpled in the away end, with the game having to be delayed by a quarter of an hour.
Beating the Gunners
2006 - Luis García grabbed the only goal of the game in the dying minutes after Jens Lehmann had beaten out Didi Hamann's long-range effort, to defeat Arsenal at Anfield in our Premiership encounter. Lehmann had saved a spot-kick from Steven Gerrard in the first half, while Jamie Carragher was playing his 400th reds game. On the same day, young Argentinean centre-back Gabriel Paletta agreed to join the reds from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m. He had to wait until July to arrive, and featured just eight times for the first team before returning to his native land to join Boca Juniors in August 2007.
Ged honoured
2002 - Gérard Houllier was given a special UEFA award following our remarkable five-trophy haul in 2001.
Bamber off the mark
1920 - Left-half Jack Bamber struck the first of his two reds goals as we beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Anfield, with Harry Chambers adding a brace.
Up against the Geordies
We have twice faced Newcastle United on this day in history, without losing.
1925 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in a top-flight encounter, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet.
1948 - We won a friendly 3-0 in front of 44,830 fans at St. James' Park, with Billy Liddell, Kevin Baron and Willie Fagan on target. Ex-Magpie Albert Stubbins missed a penalty.
Beginnings and ends
1981 - Kevin Sheedy made the first of only five reds appearances in a 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham City, before his departure across Stanley Park. David Johnson and Phil Neal scored for the reds as we led 2-0. Ray Kennedy had to step in as an emergency centre-half for this game due to an injury crisis.
1959 - Forward Bobby Murdoch played his nineteenth and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 3-0 at Cardiff City. He moved on to Barrow seven months later.
Zico on the way out
1995 - Phil Neal was sacked as Manager of Coventry City. He had been in charge for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh.
Lacey for Ireland
1914 - Billy Lacey struck twice past ex-reds keeper Sam Hardy, his only goals for his country as a reds player and last for the Ireland side as they beat England 3-0 in a British International Championships game at Ayresome Park.
1919 - Lacey also played for his country in a 2-2 draw with Wales in Belfast in the same competition, and later represented both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Harry's bow
1925 - Ex-red Harry Beadles won the first of his two caps for Wales as they lost 3-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Tynecastle.
Kenny against the mighty Emlyn
1973 - Emlyn Hughes lined up against future clubmate Kenny Dalglish as England thumped Scotland 5-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park.
1979 - Avi Cohen won his last cap in his first spell as a Maccabi Tel Aviv player as Israel beat Greece 4-1 in a friendly in Tel-Aviv.
Youngsters in action
2002 - Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-18's in their 3-2 defeat by Germany.
2001 - He featured for the Under-16's as they thumped Greece 4-0.
2010 - Conor Coady captained England Under-17's as they beat Ukraine 3-0 in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also in action.
Another club for Prudhoe
1997 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined York City on loan from Stoke City. He only played twice for the Minstermen before returning to the Victoria Ground.
Michael the romantic
2004 - Michael Owen got engaged to Louise Bonsall. She had given birth to their first daughter, Gemma Rose, the previous year.
