Have a Wright good day
1980 - Former reds right-back Stephen Wright was born in Bootle. He made 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions.
On our way to a treble
1983 - Goals from Graeme Souness, David Hodgson and a Phil Neal penalty gave us a 3-0 Semi-final first-leg lead over Burnley on our way to a third consecutive League Cup triumph.
Another stalemate
2003 - We suffered our fifth straight home League draw, after Geremi's free-kick gave Middlesbrough the lead with their only first-half attempt on goal. It was their first away League goal for more than thirteen hours. John Arne Riise grabbed a late equaliser after Michael Owen's mazy run through the penalty area.
Bobby off the mark
1958 - We beat Charlton Athletic 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Geoff Twentyman and Billy Liddell struck before Bobby Murdoch bagged his first reds goal.
2006 - We also faced the Addicks, going down 2-0 at The Valley to succumb to our third defeat in four League games, and ninth straight loss in London.
FA Cup memories
We have had mixed fortunes in the FA Cup on this day over the years.
1902 - We were knocked out by non-League opposition for the first time, as reigning Southern League champions Southampton won 4-1 in the Second Round, with left-half George Fleming bagging our consolation at The Dell, the first of his six reds strikes.
1947 - We managed to put out the Cup holders, beating Derby County 1-0 in the Fifth Round at Anfield, with Jack Balmer grabbing the goal. We were eventually knocked out by Burnley in a Semi-final replay.
Mixed derby fortunes
We have faced Everton at Goodison three times on this day in history, only winning once.
1913 - We won 2-0 in a top-flight encounter when Jack Parkinson netted a brace.
1905 - We lost an FA Cup First Round replay 2-1, when Arthur Goddard nabbed our consolation in his hundredth reds game.
1964 - We were beaten 3-1 in a League game when Ian St. John was on the scoresheet.
1941 - We also lost 3-1 when we entertained our neighbours in a Wartime League fixture, with Cyril Done bagging our goal.
Digger on the move
1999 - John Barnes joined Charlton Athletic from Newcastle United on a free transfer. He made just two starts for the Addicks, and another ten appearances from off the bench, before retiring at the end of the season.
1989 - He scored in England's 2-1 friendly win in Greece. Fellow red Peter Beardsley also played. Meanwhile, Steve Nicol appeared for Scotland on the same day, as they lost a World Cup qualifier 3-2 in Cyprus.
Thumping the Tractor boys
1975 - John Toshack nabbed a brace while Brian Hall, Alec Lindsay and Peter Cormack all struck as we beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Anfield.
Wearside despair
We have twice faced Sunderland in First Division matches on this day in history, losing both games without finding the net.
1908 - We lost 1-0 at Roker Park with centre-half James Gorman playing his 23rd and last reds game.
1936 - We went down 3-0 at Anfield.
First caps for the youngsters
2005 - Scott Carson won his first cap for England Under-21's as a red, and ninth to date, as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly at Pride Park, with John Welsh also appearing. Meanwhile, ex-red Jari Litmanen won his first cap as a Hansa Rostock player, and 94th in all, skippering Finland as they beat Latvia 2-1 in the Semi-final of the Cyprus Tournament. Sami Hyypiä also played, while David Raven and Darren Potter both featured in friendly internationals, for England Under-20's and Republic of Ireland Under-21's respectively.
2006 - Young reds keeper Paul Willis made his debut for Northern Ireland Under-21's, conceding and then saving a penalty as they beat Israel 1-0 in a friendly in Nazareth.
Other first caps
2011 - Conor Coady skippered an England Under-19's side that included his clubmates Tom Ince and Jack Robinson, with all three making their debut at this level as they lost 1-0 to Germany in Chesterfield.
1989 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Derby County player, and twelfth in total, as Wales drew 3-3 with Israel in a friendly in Tel Aviv. Future red Ronnie Rosenthal also featured.
2007 - Milan Baroš won his first cap while with Olympique Lyonnais as the Czech Republic beat Belgium 2-0 in a friendly in Brussels. On the same day, Djibril Cissé won his first cap while on loan at Olympique de Marseille as France were beaten 1-0 by Argentina at the Stade de France, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka also featuring. Also in friendly action that day were Mark González, Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise, with Ryan Babel nabbing his final goal while with Ajax.
More youngsters in action
2005 - Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-21's as they beat Russia 2-1. On the same day, future red Daniel Agger was booked as Denmark Under-21's won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Greece.
1961 - Gerry Byrne won his only England Under-23's cap as they beat Wales 2-0 at Goodison Park.
2009 - Skipper Emiliano Insúa was sent off as Argentina lost 1-0 to Colombia in the final phase of the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" tournament in Venezuela. Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay as they beat Brazil in the same competition that day.
Out on loan
1995 - Paul Stewart joined First Division Burnley on loan. He made six appearances for the Clarets as they headed towards relegation.
1985 - Mike Hooper temporarily joined basement side Wrexham from his hometown club Bristol City. He played twenty times before signing permanently that July.
2000 - Reserves defender Neil Murphy joined Luton Town on loan. He spent a month at Kenilworth Road before returning to Anfield, although he was released at the end of the season, joining Steve McMahon's Blackpool on a free transfer.
Stephen on the move
2008 - Ex-reds reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan re-signed for Chester City from Boston United.
