Liverpool v Unirea Urziceni (18/02/2010) - Down Memory Lane
Tuesday, 16th February 2010
YNWA looks back at our previous visitors from Romania as we prepare to entertain Unirea Urziceni in the first leg of our Europa League round of 32 tie on Thursday.

Most recently
We beat Steaua Bucureşti in November 2003, our fiftieth win in the UEFA Cup/Fairs Cup, with Harry Kewell netting the only goal as we reached the Third Round 2-1 on aggregate.

Twice against Dinamo
Alec Lindsay, Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes all struck as we beat Dinamo Bucureşti 3-0 in a Fairs Cup Second Round tie in October 1970, with the reds also rattling the crossbar on two occasions. We kept our fourth Anfield clean sheet in that season's European Cup in April 1984, with Sammy Lee heading the only goal of our Semi-final first leg encounter from an Alan Kennedy free-kick. We escaped when Ionel Augustin raced clear of the defence and rounded Bruce Grobbelaar, but could only strike the post. Graeme Souness incurred the wrath of the visiting side when Lica Movilă broke his jaw as a result of a challenge from the fiery Scot.

Other visitors
We were held to a goalless draw by Rapid Bucureşti in September 2000 to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 1-0 on aggregate, on our way to claiming the trophy for the third time. Ian's St. John and Callaghan were on target as we beat Petrolul Ploieşti 2-0 in the opening game of our European Cup campaign in September 1966. We lost 3-1 in the return, and eventually went through after a third match on neutral territory.
