Fiorentina v Liverpool (29/09/2009) - Meet the Referee
Sunday, 27th September 2009
Dr Felix Brych of Germany will referee our next Champions League match against Fiorentina on Tuesday night.

The 34-year old from Munich has made giant strides in the football world having only been refereeing in the Bundesliga since 2004. His quick rise through the ranks obviously means that UEFA have big plans for the Doctor In Law graduate.

He is currently the third youngest referee in the top flight of the German league, making his debut in August 2004 as Hertha BSC Berlin and 1. FSV Mainz 05 shared two goals in the Olympiastadion. He is only a few games away from reaching his 100th Bundesliga match.

This will be only his second Champions League match so far, his debut game was at Anfield as we beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 back in October last year.

He has refereed two Champions League qualifiers this season, a goalless draw between Sporting Clube de Portugal and Twente in July and then Club Atlético de Madrid's 3-2 win at Panathinaikos the following month. Ex-red Leto scored for the Greeks in a game that also included Djibril Cissé and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Earlier this month he cautioned Sami Hyypiä during Bayer 04 Leverkusen's 3-2 win at VfL Wolfsburg.

He has refereed two World Cup qualifiers so far and a handful of international friendlies, including a 2-1 win for England over Switzerland back in February 2008.

Felix has had a book published, titled Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der gemeindlichen Förderung des Berufssports aus rechtlicher Sicht which was a follow-up to his sports paper for his degree.

His assistants for the game are Thorsten Schiffner and Mark Borsch with Deniz Aytekin as the fourth official.
