Alan Wiley of Staffordshire will referee our Carling Cup tie at Elland Road against Leeds United.
It is a quick return to Yorkshire for the 49-year old as he refereed the pulsating Sheffield derby on Friday night. Not content with the Sheffield derby, the powers that be decided he should be fourth official for the Manchester United/City clash on Sunday. So with this appointment it has turned out to be quite a meaty hat-trick for one the Premiership's more experienced referees.
He started refereeing back in 1981 through the West Midlands Regional League and became a Football League linesman ten years later. In 1994 he was promoted to run the line in The Premiership. He was then given the whistle in The Football League twelve months later.
Alan has refereed two clashes between Leeds United and us. Back in April 2001, Leeds came away from Anfield 2-1 winners with Steven Gerrard getting his marching orders. Then later on in October that year, it was back to Anfield for a 1-1 draw, but the match will always be remembered as being the one that saw Gérard Houllier rushed to hospital at half time.
He is one of three current referees who have refereed both the FA Cup and League Cup Finals, achieving this three seasons ago by becoming the first referee to do both finals in the same season. He had already refereed Manchester United's 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Carling Cup before he got the call to replace Mike Dean for the FA Cup Final between West Ham United and ourselves. Wiley classes that game as the best one he has ever officiated in.
Alan recently refereed our 3-2 win at Bolton Wanderers at the end of last month, but we have to go back to May 2008 for the last time he refereed Leeds. However, their fans will remember the game well as they overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit to win 2-0 at Carlisle United in the League One Play-Off semi-final at Brunton Park. His last game at Elland Road was 1-1 draw against Sheffield United in October 2005.
His assistants are Andy Garrett and Gary Stott with Andy Hall as the fourth official. Andy Garrett was his official on Friday night at Bramall Lane.
