A black day for the club
1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in the summer of 1974.
Another legend passes on
1944 - Matt McQueen died. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times. He became a Director after the First World War, and then managed the club for five years during the 1920's.
Aldo's treble
1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. Peter Beardsley bagged the other, while John Barnes had a goal disallowed for scoring direct from an apparently indirect free-kick.
Rushie's European record
1992 - Ian Rush scored his twentieth and final European goal, a then club record, in our 2-1 win at Apollon Limassol in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Don Hutchinson scored the second as we progressed 8-2 on aggregate. Paul Stewart was dismissed late on after a tangle with the Cypriot keeper Christophi.
Up to 400
2007 - Substitute Yossi Benayoun's strike past ex-red Chris Kirkland at Wigan Athletic ensured that the reds reached 400 away points in the Premiership. However, the match was somewhat marred by fighting in the home stands when some reds celebrated our winning goal in amongst Latics fans.
A goalscoring debut
1951 - Centre-forward Jack Smith scored on his reds debut in our 2-0 First Division defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Bryan Williams netting the other.
Another European first
1965 - We made our first appearance in the European Cup Winners' Cup, going down 1-0 to a late Gianfranco Leoncini pile-driver at Juventus with the home side also having three penalty appeals turned down. We won the second leg 2-0 and went on to reach the final.
More European adventures
1970 - Emlyn Hughes struck a 25-yard equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Hungarian side Ferencvárosi in a Fairs Cup match, to go through to the Second Round 2-1 on aggregate.
1971 - Crazy Horse netted again as we beat Servette FC Genève 2-0 at Anfield, with Steve Heighway also scoring, to reach the Second Round of the European Cup Winners' Cup.
1998 - Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace as we beat Kosice 5-0 in Slovakia to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 8-0 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler also netted twice, having previously missed a penalty, while Paul Ince was also on target with Patrik Berger and Michael Owen both hitting the woodwork. Marek Spilar was dismissed for the home side after an hour for yet another clumsy challenge on Owen.
2009 - We lost our Champions League group game 2-0 at Fiorentina, with Stevan Jovetić netting both goals.
1,500 at the City Ground
1979 - We played our 1,500th away League game, going down 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. During this game, Viv Anderson's indirect free-kick went straight in and was disallowed.
Derby despair
We have lost both our top-flight meetings with Everton on this day in history.
1906 - Jack Parkinson bagged our consolation as we lost 2-1 at Anfield.
1928 - We lost 1-0 across the park.
1917 - We also faced the Blues in a Wartime League game at Goodison, with Thomas Bennett and Arthur Metcalf striking as we drew 2-2.
Irwin born
1990 - Ex-reserve Steven Irwin was born in Liverpool. He was promoted to Melwood in July 2008, having featured in the FA Youth Cup Final in 2006. He failed to break through to the first team proper, although he played in all three pre-season games in the summer of 2010, and was released last June.
Cooper's last
1934 - Ex-red Tom Cooper skippered England while winning his fifteenth and final cap, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff.
Disappointment in the Black Country
We have twice lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in First Division meetings on this day in history.
1894 - Jimmy Ross nabbed our consolation from the spot as we lost 3-1.
1962 - Jimmy Melia bagged a brace in our 3-2 defeat.
Mixed fortunes against the Wearsiders
1900 - We lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland, with Charlie Wilson on the scoresheet.
1990 - We won another top-flight encounter at Roker Park, with Ray Houghton striking the only goal of the game.
Pegguy takes a step down
2001 - Pegguy Arphexad joined Stockport County on a month's loan. He played three times, conceding five goals as they only picked up one point.
Olympic defeat
2000 - Brad Friedel was on the losing side as the USA failed to win a medal at the Sydney Olympics, being beaten 2-0 by Chile in the third-place play-off.
