Four apiece
1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers' new player/manager Ray Lewington.

1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on.
1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory.

The first Irish red
1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps just one day after his senior reds debut in a League Cup tie.
1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo.

Reds sold
1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game.
1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side.

Debutants galore
2008 - Keeper Diego Cavalieri and right-back Philipp Degen both made their reds debuts as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, the hundredth game we had played in the competition on home turf, although one came as the ‘away' side. Unfortunately, Degen suffered two broken ribs during the match. Daniel Agger and Lucas Leiva struck our goals.

1899 - Forward Jack Parkinson made his only reds appearance in our 2-1 home derby defeat, with Tom Robertson netting our consolation.
1905 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his reds bow in our 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Anfield, when Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt were on target.
1933 - South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys made his debut in our 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet.

1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting.
1957 - Winger John Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals.

Happy birthday Fred
1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920's. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920's. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United's Harry Hammond bagging a treble.

First goal against
1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal, in our fourth match, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace.

Derby wins
We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history.
1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front.
1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game.

Double century
2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory.

All sung out
2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser.

Five three times
We have won 5-0 at Anfield on three separate occasions on this day in history.
1961 - Jimmy Melia grabbed a brace while Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also struck as we beat Bury in a Second Division meeting, our record ever victory over the Shakers.
1972 - Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted against Sheffield United to take us to the top of the First Division, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty immediately after Tommy Smith had one saved for the second consecutive game.
1980 - Sammy Lee struck twice with Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough also on the scoresheet as we met Third Division Swindon Town in a League Cup Third Round tie, as we also benefited from a Glen Cockerill own goal.

Bosses no more
1998 - Steve McMahon was sacked as Swindon Town boss after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions.
2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot.

The Gems on the mark
2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17's in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago.

Disappointment against the Baggies
We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win.
1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield.
1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He hid behind keeper Tony Godden and poked the ball home when he rolled it out. These were our first dropped points of the season, in our seventh League match. Winger Laurie Cunningham had opened the scoring for the home side, while Ray Clemence was playing his 500th reds game.

Olympian reds
2000 - Brad Friedel played as the USA drew 2-2 with Japan in the Olympics Quarter-final in Adelaide, and then won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 after extra time. On the same day, future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil in their 2-1 defeat by Cameroon after extra time in Brisbane.

Mighty Mouse ties the knot
1964 - Kevin Keegan married Jean at St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church in Doncaster.

Finn off the mark
1995 - Future reds right-back Steve Finnan scored on his debut for Birmingham City as they drew 1-1 at Watford.

Fame at last
2010 - Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence and Kenny Dalglish were all inducted into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame at Hilton Hotel, Manchester, with Kenny doing so as a Manager, having previously been enrolled as a player.

On the move
1998 - Future reds goalkeeping coach John Achterberg joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. He played 312 times on the Wirral, before moving to Melwood in June 2009.
1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Manchester City for £100,000. He made just fifty appearances in three years at Maine Road before joining Bolton Wanderers.
1983 - Future red Peter Beardsley signed for Newcastle United from Vancouver Whitecaps for £150,000. He netted 61 in 163 games for the Toon, before moving to Anfield in July 1987.
