Beating the Mancs
2008 - Albert Riera made his reds bow as we came from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. Carlos Tévez opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes, with a Wes Brown own goal drawing us level before half an hour had elapsed. This was the 400th goal we had scored under Rafael Benítez. Substitute Ryan Babel handed us victory before Nemanja Vidić was sent off in stoppage time, a fate that was also to befall him in the reverse fixture later that season. This was the fiftieth time a substitute had netted in Benítez's reign.
1969 - We lost 1-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to a Willie Morgan strike.

Aldo off
1989 - John Aldridge left for Real Sociedad for £1.1m after 63 goals in 104 reds games, to become their first non-Basque player. He was signed by ex-red John Toshack and struck 33 times in 63 games in two years before returning to Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers.

Joy and despair at Ewood
2003 - Michael Owen netted a brace, including a penalty, as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Kewell also on target. Anthony Le Tallec made his senior debut, while Jerzy Dudek played his hundredth reds game. However, the game was badly marred, firstly by Milan Baroš breaking his ankle in an accidental collision with the on-loan Markus Babbel. This was followed later in the first half by Lucas Neill breaking Jamie Carragher's leg, for which he was sent off.

Winning in Spain
2005 - We won 2-1 in the Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera to see off Real Betis Balompié in our Champions League group game. Florent Sinama-Pongolle opened the scoring with Luis García also on target.

Happy birthdays
1944 - Left-back Peter Wall was born in Westbury. ‘Max' signed for his local club Shrewsbury Town on his eighteenth birthday, and arrived at Anfield from Wrexham in a deal that cost us £26,000 plus Stuart Mason in October 1966. He failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1.

1962 - Our former Assistant Physiotherapist Mark Browes was born in Colchester. The ex-Colchester United centre-forward was Dave Galley's number two, before working with new physio Víctor Salinas. He switched to Melwood in 2002 after spells on the backroom staff for Aylesbury United and Queens Park Rangers but left the reds after seven years.

Losing our grip
1978 - We lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest in the first leg of our European Cup First Round encounter, our hundredth game in Europe, as we began to lose our grip on the trophy that we had won for the previous two seasons. We could only secure a goalless draw in the Anfield return, as Forest went on to claim the cup for the first of two consecutive seasons.

A goalscoring debut
1894 - Jimmy Ross scored on his reds bow, but it was not enough to prevent us losing 2-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers. The Scotsman had signed from Preston North End for a then-record £75 earlier that year. Forward Neil Kerr also debuted in this game.

Other reds debutants
1980 - Richard Money made his reds debut as a substitute for Alan Hansen in our 4-0 defeat of West Bromwich Albion at Anfield. Terry McDermott netted from the spot, while David Fairclough bagged a brace with Graeme Souness also scoring. Money only made seventeen first-team appearances during his two years in L4, leaving for Luton Town in April 1982.

1919 - Right-half Jack Bamber and full-back Tommy Lucas both made their official reds bows as we beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Fred Pagnam and Donald Mackinlay, in the final minute.
1997 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday as they lost 2-1 in the League at Anfield, with reds legend Steve Nicol also in the visiting side. Paul Ince and Michael Thomas were on target for the reds in the second half before Wayne Collins headed in a late consolation.

Back in the League Cup
1967 - We played our first game in the Football League Cup for nearly seven years, with Peter Thompson netting against his future employers Bolton Wanderers as we were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Round tie at Anfield. Unfortunately, we crashed out in the replay two weeks later.

Into management
2004 - Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Newcastle United, a week after resigning as boss of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to fourteenth in the League in his first season in charge, and then spent a large sum of money on a host of new players including ex-reds hero Michael Owen, before being sacked in February 2006.
1974 - Ian St. John was appointed Portsmouth boss. He managed them for three seasons, although his record was poor, leading them to just 31 victories in 124 games in charge as Pompey were relegated into the old Third Division, and then narrowly escaped a further descent to the League basement.

An eight-goal thriller against City
1924 - We beat Manchester City 5-3 at Anfield, with three of our goals coming in the last ten minutes. Danny Shone netted twice with Donald Mackinlay, Dick Forshaw and Dick Johnson also on the scoresheet.
1941 - We also defeated City when Dickie Dorsett and Billy Liddell struck in a 4-3 Wartime League victory at Maine Road, with Cyril Done nabbing a brace.

Disappointment at opposite ends of the country
We have played both Portsmouth and Sunderland twice in the top flight on this day in history, without securing a single win.
1902 - Sam Raybould was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 at Roker Park.
1913 - Tommy Gracie netted our consolation against the Wearside outfit at Anfield as we lost 3-1 with Billy Lacey missing a penalty.
1947 - We lost 1-0 at Fratton Park
1952 - Bryan Williams was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Portsmouth.

Future reds on the way up
1985 - Ray Houghton signed for Oxford United from Fulham for £147,000. He struck fourteen times in 105 appearances, before moving on to Anfield two years later for £825,000.
1980 - John Barnes made his competitive debut for Sudbury Court as a substitute in a Middlesex League game that ended 3-3.
2000 - Current First Team Coach Kevin Keen joined Macclesfield Town on a free transfer from Stoke City, netting three goals in seventy outings for the Silkmen.

Olympian reds
2000 - Brad Friedel and future red Milan Baroš faced each other in an Olympics group match in Canberra. The game ended 2-2.

Harper leaves Merseyside
1993 - Ex-reserves defender Alan Harper joined Luton Town on a free transfer from Everton. He made 48 appearances for the Hatters before moving to Sheffield Wednesday the following August.
