YNWA takes a look back at recent memorable League meetings at Anfield as Manchester United arrive for the 77th time in the League on Sunday. So far, we have won 36, drawn eighteen and lost 22, with only last season of the most recent seven ending in victory.
A win at last
Albert Riera made his reds bow in September 2008 as we came from behind to win 2-1. Carlos Tévez opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes, with a Wes Brown own goal drawing us level before half an hour had elapsed. This was the 400th goal we had scored under Rafael Benítez. Substitute Ryan Babel handed us victory before Nemanja Vidić was sent off in stoppage time, a fate that was also to befall him in the reverse fixture later that season.
Also recently
Carlos Tévez grabbed the only goal of the game in December 2007, while we lost to a last minute John O'Shea goal nine months earlier, despite Paul Scholes being sent off for the visitors, as United secured a third straight clean League sheet at Anfield, the first time they had ever achieved this. Steve Finnan was making his 400th career League appearance.
We were held to a goalless draw in September 2005, after a run of three consecutive defeats in this fixture, a first for United. Wayne Rooney bagged the only goal of the game eight months earlier, and also successfully dodged a mobile phone. Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino both debuted, with Djimi Traoré playing his hundredth reds game. Wes Brown was sent off late on for United.
Jerzy Dudek's calamitous slip handed United the lead in December 2002. Sami Hyypiä's late strike was not enough, following a double from Diego Forlan as we lost 2-1. We lost by the same score eleven months later, with Ryan Giggs this time bagging a brace before Harry Kewell's strike gave us hope until the end.
A win
Two Michael Owen goals and a John Arne Riise belter gave us a 3-1 win in November 2001, our most recent League defeat of the Red Devils at Anfield.
Off the mark
Graeme Souness scored a left-foot volley at the Anny Road end in a 3-1 win back in February 1978, his first reds goal. It was later named the BBC's Goal Of The Season, while Ray Kennedy and Jimmy Case also scored. Two Jamie Carragher own goals sent us to a 3-2 defeat in September 1999, seen by Anfield's record Premier League attendance of 44,929. Andy Cole was sent off for the visitors, having scored, with Sami Hyypiä netting his first reds goal and Patrik Berger also on target.
Our 2-0 win in April 1992 handed the title to Leeds United, with Ian Rush finally getting his first goal against Manchester United. Mark Walters netted the second. The Kop crowed "now you're gonna believe us, you'll never win the League..."
More dismissals
Danny Murphy was sent off late on in March 2001, after Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler had shot us to a 2-0 win. Denis Irwin was dismissed in a 2-2 draw in May 1999 that we thought would help hand the League to Arsenal, but United still went on to win the title that season. Jamie Redknapp and ex-United star Paul Ince scored our goals. United's Colin Gibson received his marching orders as we were held to a 3-3 draw after leading 3-1 in April 1988. Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie and Steve McMahon struck our goals, with Gordon Strachan angering Kopites by smoking an imaginary cigar in front of them after scoring the equaliser.
Final strikes
John Barnes struck his 108th and final reds goal as we lost 3-1 in April 1997 with Gary Pallister scoring twice with his head, and Andy Cole also on target. Kevin Keegan scored his hundredth and final reds goal as we won 1-0 back in May 1977.
Hat-tricks galore
Peter Beardsley scored a treble in a 4-0 rout in September 1990 that included his fiftieth reds goal. Keeper Les Sealey booted the ball into the crowd at the end, but the Kopite who caught it later returned it to the hat-trick hero. John Barnes nabbed our other goal. Dick Forshaw netted trebles in successive seasons in the 1920's. We won 5-0 in September 1925, with Harry Chambers and Archie Rawlings also on target, and 4-2 the following August, when Gordon Hodgson also notched, with winger Dick Edmed making his reds bow.
Sam Raybould struck our first ever treble against United in April 1905, with Jack Cox also on the scoresheet as we won 4-0. Inside-left Willie McPherson scored a hat-trick in our stunning 7-4 victory in March 1908. Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson both added braces that day.
Stalemate
In January 1994, Neil Ruddock equalised as we came back from 3-0 down to take a point, after Nigel Clough had bagged a brace. A certain tabloid rag later alleged that Bruce Grobbelaar lost £125,000 after ‘accidentally' saving a late United winner.
Injuries
Paul Walsh left the field with ruptured ligaments after a clash with Kevin Moran in February 1986, with John Wark on target in a 1-1 draw marred by someone spraying Ron Atkinson and Bryan Robson with ammonia as they arrived. Kenny Dalglish broke a cheekbone as Craig Johnston netted in a 1-1 draw in January 1984, with Norman Whiteside bagging a late equaliser.
Bruce again
We won 2-0 in March 1995, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season.
